  • Dramatic gorge, raging river, beautifully restored old train and superb New Zealand scenery, as the young like to say “what’s not to like”. We set out from Palmerston North aboard Steam Incorporated’s “Deco Delights Express” with DA 1431, heading along the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) to its junction with the Napier line, continuing through pleasant rolling countryside to Ashhurst and the beginning of the legendary gorge. The river is a raging torrent of muddy brown water, cautiously the driver eases our train along a ledge cut in the rock face carrying the line above the swirling cauldron below. Our train edges slowly over a succession precarious bridges, squeezing through narrow tunnels, punctuated with breath taking views of the gorge fore and aft. This is a trip that is going to be talked about for years to come. We pass the remnants of previous rock slips, the result of earthquakes or torrential rain reminding us of nature’s awesome power, finally our little train of red carriages climbs out of the stupendous gorge, to speed across rolling green pastures to Woodville.

    I am 77 yrs of age. When I was 18 I worked on the construction of the Woodville side of the number 2 tunnel. To find this footage that you have posted was amazing and most enjoyable and nostalgic for me, thank you. The editing is a little out, but only I and a few old engine drivers/firemen would notice. The first tunnel entered is in fact the 2nd (No 2) tunnel. They were numbered from the Ashhurst side. On exiting the tunnel you can see where the last 100+ feet is made in a box shape, not the curved top as in the main tunnel. It was boxed and poured concrete. For nearly 2 years, I drove a motor jigger (a Velocipede) from Woodville to the job, with the rest of the gang. There was no vehicular traffic on the line like trucks today. I lived in a railway hut in a camp site which has long since disappeared not far from the Railway Hotel which can be seen as a 2 storey dark grey building on the left as you cross the main road to Masterton and enter the Woodville Station. Well done Tim, a pleasure to watch. Ron H Johansson. ps. I could go on for hours about nearly being killed a couple of times and a giant slip that came down and blocked the gorge for a few days. Pity the water was dirty at the time of filming, it looks really pretty when the river is clean.

      Hi, I first saw the gorge whilst visiting New Zealand about 10 years ago. I purchased a video by EJVideos from which this clip is an excerpt - ua-cam.com/video/vhsX7qal-bE/v-deo.html When I saw that there were occasional special trains through the gorge I timed this trip so that I could travel on one. From the road the line looks spectacular and it looks even better from the train. I sometimes have a little trouble editing videos in the correct order when I have used several cameras as I rely on Google Earth and occasionally its hard to match the shot with any place shown on Google Earth. I really enjoyed reading your memories of the time you spent working on the line, memories like that are priceless. In 2010 I saw the line just after it had just reopened following a landslip that derailed a milk train. That must given the driver one hell of a fright. I have seen the gorge in good weather when the river is clear, it's really is something special. I wish I had met you on my visit, I would have enjoyed listening to your memories over a beer or a coffee. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and your comment is really appreciated. Tim.

    I have been watching quite a few of these videos. This one takes the cake. First, the train journey starts, you wonder at the mountains on the right and then the river flowing. Half way through, you notice car traffic on the other side. Then comes another phase of plain ground and a parallel road. What beauty.

      Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed this unique look at New Zealand. The road through the gorge is permanently closed now due a land-slide and a large part of it being washed away by the river, the only way to see the gorge today is to walk the hiking trail or travel on the annual passenger train to Napier's "Art Deco " weekend.

    Thanks for the trip. I lived in Woodville in the 70's & drove the gorge every day to work in Palmy. I've driven through it, rafted down it, jet boated up it & even flown through it but never on the rail. Now home is in the Idaho Rockies.

      I first saw the gorge whilst touring New Zealand about ten years ago. Via the internet I found that there were occasional special trains, so I planned this visit so that could travel through it by train to Napier. It was well worth the time and effort, next time it would be great to do it in a jet boat. Driving the gorge every day, you must have seen some scary sights, what with landslips and accidents. I bet the Idaho Rockies are pretty scenic too.

      It will be around 2 years before my next visit to New Zealand, it would nice to catch up with Ronald. They say everyone has a book in them, can't help thinking Ronald's recollections would make good reading. I comment back because it is a rewarding experience, that has resulted in a good number of people recounting their own experiences of places and trips, sometimes from many years ago. I have also met people in person around the world as a result of this channel, again this has been rewarding, as locals often know the best places and times to see and do things. TV channels are good but they are not really a community, whereas You Tube is a community and it also offers people such as myself an opportunity to share experiences with a wider audience.

      I've considered the train excursion but my tramping buddy reckons its a tedious and long day, with expensive, indifferent food and nothing to do in Woodville. Then I wonder why there are no trains to Napier?

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  3 роки тому

      @@japeking1 Hi, there are only a handful passenger trains through the gorge every year, mostly run by Steam Incorporated in conjunction with Napier's Art Deco weekend or on circular tours via the Wairarapa' line and Wellington. I highly recommend both tours. The tramp would be rewarding, although you will need to allow a complete day to do it. New Zealand's poor attitude to passenger trains, forces tourists to either use the roads or chose other destinations around the world. New Zealand is impossible to tour by rail, there are no worthwhile specialist rail holidays, unlike almost every other country in the world and I should know, I spend a lot of time touring the world on special trains. It would make sense for the government to introduce trains aimed at the tourist market to Napier, New Plymouth, Rotorua and Dunedin. The trains themselves might not make money, but they would really add to the tourist experience, spreading the tourist dollar more widely across the country. Take a look at the holidays offered by "Great Rail Journeys" - www.greatrail.com/trains/ Only the TranzScenic trains are offered in New Zealand, although they are nice trips, they are not enough to attract people to New Zealand when most of the holiday will be spent on a road coach being herded around like cattle. If you get the opportunity to travel through the gorge by rail, I'm sure you will enjoy the experience - this one looks good - www.steaminc.org.nz/book-a-tour/heartland-flyer/

      @@Timsvideochannel1 If they hadn't closed and ripped up many of the interesting and unique branch lines such as the ECMT from Morrinsville to Te Aroha and on to Paeroa and Thames, back through the Karangahake Gorge to Waihi and on to Tauranga, we could run some amazing tourist trains. If I was Prime Minister, the first thing I would do is make them re-lay those lines and reinstate them. It could be done, it would just take a bit of money (that could be saved from other wasteful spending) and the urge to do it.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  2 роки тому +1

      @@sw6188 Hi, the NZ government was a bit hasty with its line closures, you'd have thought they might have learned from the UK's disastrous Beeching cuts. Accountants aren't capable of rational thought, they never see the bigger picture, railways don't have to make money to contribute to the economy as a whole. Lorry taxes rarely cover the cost of the damage they do to the roads, but that's OK, motorists make up the shortfall. Railways are treated as an isolated cost center, with little or no regard to their value as a cheaper means of transport to the places they serve. A factory or mine that can't gets its goods to the market place at a reasonable cost will suffer financial hardship, jobs are either not created or lost, in some cases towns die. Not all railways could or should be saved, but some such as the ECMT, the Rotorua line and the SOL still have the potential to serve a useful roll, both for freight and tourist traffic. Switzerland shows the world how public transport should be run, New Zealand's government claims to be green, but little they do backs that clam up, how do they justify removing the electrification from the NIMT? what happened to Wellington's trolley buses? New Zealand needs to run proper luxury tourist trains linked to rail based holidays, road coaches are not the answer. New Zealand is an expensive holiday destination, there are plenty of cheaper countries around the world with equally magnificent scenery, NZ has taken foreign tourists for granted for too long, if the tourist trade is to recover after Covid, the government is going to have to rethink the quality on offer, herding people around in a road coach is simply not acceptable for an expensive, once in a lifetime holiday. The camper-vans on offer, even the expensive ones often look as though they have just competed in a destruction derby. It will be interesting to see how NZ rebuilds its tourist economy, assuming it wants a tourist industry in the future. I love NZ, but as a regular visitor, I have seen a marked drop in the quality of holidays as the bulk of tourists now come from China, rather the Europe, Australia, Japan and the USA. If I were a teacher marking New Zealand as a holiday destination, I would have to say "must do better". I hope the NZ government does get its act together and rebuild its tourist industry to a higher standard with an eye on what is available in the rest of the world, often at a cheaper price.

    Enjoyed it, my wife's family were train people working the SE USA. I came to NZ in 2017 to photograph and video the South Island. While I was there we had two tropical cyclones and two earthquakes (about 5.0's). We motored west from Picton to Westport in splendid weather but when we turned south, we were in a thick for before we got to pancake rocks, we overnighted in Greymouth where it was difficult to find lodging because of the fog. The next day we returned to Picton where we stayed at the Yacht Club and enjoyed the local food and scenery. It's a beautiful country with great people, I'm 71 but I'll try again!

      Hi, I visit New Zealand about every eighteen months to see my son and his family, I've probably spent 7 or 8 months there in total and I've seen all extremes of weather, but I've yet to feel a serious earthquake, although I've seen the after effects on a number of occasions. You were unlucky to get caught in fog, apart from the sea spray rolling inland on windy days, the only fog I've experienced is high up in the mountains, when I guess the fog was actually a inside of cloud. It does rain a lot on the West Coast of South Island, hence all the wonderful temperate rain forest. Seventy one isn't old, the USA elects presidents a lot older than that and they will be expected to serve at least 4 and possibly 8 years, you've got plenty of time yet to return to New Zealand, and see a bit more of the country, it really is a fascinating and beautiful place. Take care and stay safe. Tim.

      @@iankemp1131 Hi Ian, I wish it was still possible to tour New Zealand by rail. I had intended to visit NZ this year to travel on one of Dunedin Rail's holiday excursions from Dunedin to Picton taking 7 days with overnight stops at towns along the way, sadly that will probably never happen, unless Dunedin Rail is resurrected once Covid is beaten. I travel the world by rail, often on specially chartered trains with companies like the Railway Touring Company or Great Rail Journeys. Sadly such trains don't exist in NZ, whereas dangerous Chinese tourists in campervans are a reality. There are a number of private train operators who could, if they got together provide charter trains to cover all of New Zealand's remaining rail network, it just requires someone or the government to provide the necessary financial guarantees and to reinstate the rail link to Rotorua. I have spoken to the rail tour operators I know, one or two offer half hearted affairs using the TranzScenic trains and road transport to cover the gaps. It is hard to find another country in the world that doesn't run trains to most of its major tourist destinations. NZ has one of the most scenic rail systems in the world, yet it expects tourists paying a small fortune to put up with rushed often uncomfortable coach holidays that only cover the well trodden tourist hotspots. The cost of a holiday in New Zealand from Europe is enough to take tourists anywhere in the world on comfortable rail based holidays. I love NZ, but I am meeting fewer and fewer tourists from Europe on my travels, they are being replaced by Chinese tourists. I sometimes wonder if NZ travel companies have given up on Europe, when what they should be doing is improving the holiday experience and that requires making use of the full rail network. A road coach might be a cost effective solution, but it isn't much good when the tourists have chosen to visit the USA, South America, Malaysia, Europe or India, all places that offer first class rail based holidays. I still love New Zealand and always look forward to visiting my son who has made NZ his home, but I'd love to kick the NZ government up the backside an tell them not to take tourists for granted, or their tourist industry might end up in same place as its passenger rail industry. New Zealand holiday brochures in the UK look tired and boring, offering even less than they did twenty years ago, whilst the rest of the world is working hard to attract the long distance tourist, who is typically 60 or over with a sizable holiday budget now that their kids have left home. I have been fortunate to have travelled more of New Zealand's rail network than most, but that is only because I am aware of some of the companies who run the occasional special trains. Take care and stay safe. Tim.

The regular tour is a great route to follow as you get to see some wonderful sights on both Islands in around 21 days. I had seen this incredible gorge from the road on previous visits and knew the line had lost its passenger service a few years earlier, so when I saw this special advertised, I booked my trip to coincide. The ride was everything I was hoping for and more. New Zealand had limited resources to spend on building it's railways through often difficult terrain, resulting in a track gauge of 3 feet 6 inches and contour hugging routes, giving the lines their unique character.

      Hi Keith, a lot has happened since this video was taken, the road on the opposite bank has now been permanently closed and a new one is being constructed that does not pass through the gorge. The railway line still operates, although it has been closed on a number of occasions by slips in the gorge. Passenger trains are very rare, limited to 2 or 3 specials a year. New Zealand's railways are a wonderful mix of British and American, although that is changing. 10 Years ago Wellington was a fascinating place for British enthusiasts, the suburban units were either British or Hungarian, nearly all the passenger hauled stock was reworked ex-British Rail Mk 2 carriages hauled by American style locomotives and many of the Signal boxes on the network are identical to their British counterparts. There were sidings containing Virgin and Gatwick Express carriages in their original livery. Now Britain is no longer a world train manufacturer, the ex BR carriages running in both Auckland and Wellington have been replaced with Spanish or Korean stock. British manufactured overhead electric locomotive still operate on the central section on the Wellington Auckland mainline for the time being. I'll be back there next month to take a look at trains on South Island. I look forward to bringing you videos from that trip.

      Hi, I drove through the gorge a couple of times, on one occasion I saw the Overlander train, I guess it had been diverted via the Wairarapa line and Masterton to reach Wellington, on another the railway was closed due to a landslip. This train runs annually to Napier. I think in total there are only 2 or 3 passenger trains a year through the gorge, it is such a shame that its beauty is almost impossible to see today, I guess it is still possible to raft the Manawatu river. I'm pleased you enjoyed seeing the gorge once again.

    • @owenpotter2459
      @owenpotter2459 4 роки тому

      @@Timsvideochannel1 I remember seeing that landslip on the railway line with the locomotive run up it at an angle. It must have been a hell of a job getting it off. The driver was so lucky it climbed straight up the rubble pile and didn't veer off into the river. He must have wondered what the hell he'd struck!
      Yes, it's only special excursion trains that carry passengers on that line now. I guess you were on one of the ones going to "Art Deco Festival" in Napier. I can't imagine why the Overlander would go through, unless there was a diversion as you say.
      If you're really keen, there is a walking track on the southern side of the gorge. Also there are organised walks along the railway line occasionally.

    The forestry of New Zealand is a fascinating jumble of native plants and those brought from Europe. Not to mention the differing climatic species living amongst each other. Here in the US, European trees generally blend in well as the native plant life was already similar. So it's harder to notice. In NZ though, it's wild!

    • @Timsvideochannel1

      Hi, temperate rain forest covers much of New Zealand, it is beautiful, tree ferns mixed in with mainly native species and the odd import from Europe. I love the Colorado Aspens in Autumn, the colors are awesome. Just outside my house in the England are several massive Beech trees, I love to see them in the changing seasons, they are almost bare now, the kids love kicking the fallen leaves down the road.

    Beautiful train journey, I very much enjoyed the video. Living in the UK and in my 70s, this is another place that I'll probably never get to see.
    If I could add just one small caveat -I'd have liked to have seen the driver's view all the way through non-stop. The passenger scenes caused confusion and added little except during the gorge section - perhaps a separate passenger's video just for that bit?
    I can't believe so long a train journey with so few intermediate stations or even passing loops. I guess services on this line are not too frerquent?

      Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. It was filmed a while ago from a diesel that really vibrated when power was applied, it was also a very wet day. Most of the footage used was filmed when the train was coasting or slowing down in between down pours. A modern GoPro camera can deal with vibration, but the one I was using when this was filmed struggled. I found that if I sped the film up, the vibration was not so noticeable. Hi, I looked at your channel, you have an interesting railway on your doorstep, not many trains continue past Masterton, but those that do are well worth capturing on video. I once followed a diverted Overlander (Northern Explorer) through the gorge and along the Wairarapa line towards Wellington, I guess the Palmerston route was closed for some reason that day. Running a UA-cam channel can be fun, although it takes a long time to build your audience, good luck. Tim.

      Do you mean through the gorge or the whole trip from Palmerston North to Napier? I am considering uploading just the forward view through gorge as 95% of the video is OK, just a few sections affected by vibration. The rest of the trip suffered from rain and vibration, but I think around 50% of it is usable. It's always a bit of a gamble putting a camera on the front of a locomotive, sometimes the result is good, other times no so good. I will upload more of the trip as I find time to edit it. Thanks for the feedback. Tim.
