The state flags of the United States are arbitrary, and need to be redrawn. Monsieur Z redraws the flags of the U.S states by accounting for culture, geography, history, economics, religion, politics, and more. Monsieur Z has spoken before about the politics behind why the American state borders should be redrawn, and now presents what the redrawn flags of America could look like.

Thoughts on The American Solidarity Party?
Can we get a what if the US had 13 commonwealths like in Fallout one step above the state but one step below the federal government.
Instead of Balkanazing america, we focus on Unity and more Regionalism, then Independence.
@@JTL1776 Hey, similar minds. That was my idea too. 👍
Yo bruv, I like georgias flag! Thanks mate!
😊❤😊😊❤😊
Idk if this was intentional, but in this universe there’s 76 U.S states. 76 as in like 1776, which is when the United States was founded. So pretty lit, in that regard.
We call that a happy accident.
@@MonsieurDean I see you, Bob Ross.
bein' real, when I saw 76, i thought of the gas station brand but good lord yea that's pretty insane. almost divinely counted if I say so myself.
Yeah, but it is really 77, because Alaska cannot be unstated.
Bring back wyoming or the Wyoming people will find you
I don’t like every single flag here but I admire the consistent conventions and regional patterns, as well as the effort to have direct meaning (including cultural meaning) beyond pure geometric symbols like the German eagle and hand of Ulster. Overall great project
All of the flags are nice, except that California flag
It’s actually kind of impressive that I can honestly say I don’t hate any of these flags. I think some are better than others, and there’s a few I’d definitely change, but I could absolutely live with all of these. Props to the designers for actually trying to make interesting flags as well, even if they don’t follow the “rules” of vexillology
@@Not_actually_a_commieI don't like the ones that they changed just so it could be different, like Alabama or Texas
@@skan5728 I agree, especially about Texas, but I don’t think they’re _bad_ per se, just unnecessarily redesigned
Now a hypothetical design for a potential 72 star flag would blend it all together nicely. Amazing work like always.
The old American flag with 72 stars in a circle would be sick.
@@warsawpactmapping83
I was thinking more of a star made up of the 72 stars. But yeah that would also be sick. Anything would be better than the boring rows of stars the real USA flag has.
@@constantinethecataphract594972 stars organized to best shape of usa?
Here's my idea for Albany's flag: A hamburger with the aurora borealis in the background, localised entirely within a kitchen.
You mean a steamed ham
@@MonsieurDean I misread that as steamed clam. ;)
All I saw was hamburger and I was onboard.
As someone who likes studying flags, I absolutely agree that the state flags of the USA need a new look. Apologies to any Americans 😅
It would be too many states.
It would be too many states.
Not Arizona or New Mexico. Those state flags are perfect in every way.
Yeah, most state flags are shit, and some states are slowly realizing that and trying to change them, not very many and it is a very slow process
These feel like the flags which would fly in a game or tv show to represent the setting of a fictional US state.
Im glad we could redesign these flags, thank Mr. Z!
Finally, the US of Z
Been a pleasure working on this project with everyone!
Hey, thanks. It was fun to see what y'all came up with.
Please do "What if East-Asians discovered & colonized the Americas at the same time as the Europeans?". With the former in the West Coast. And the latter in the East Coast. The Japanese and English in what's now USA. The Chinese and French in Canada. And Koreans and Spaniards in Latin America. But before all that, the Americas remained untouched by humans. And the Pacific Ocean as small as the Atlantic; fast and easy enough for travel. How'd history have played out?
Two other cool ideas he should do is "What if the Mali Empire colonized America" and "What if the Polynesians set up permanent colonies in America", heck you could combine our three timelines to take place at the same time alongside the Vinland timeline he did, and have a scramble for America happen, you could even have the European countries send out a boat that contains an equal amount of scientists from each country, and make the European discovery of America into its own series like artist Hitler!
I'm thinking border gore with this one
I'll be leading Philadelphia's secessionist movement from New Jersey if you don't mind.
New Jersey (Philadelphia) Area Should Be Named, As It's Now: The Delaware Valley 💯😅
Philadelphia is in Pennsylvania, not New Jersey.
@@martychisnall☝️🤓
It’s just a joke bruh
I really can't imagine "driving to Philadelphia to get to the shore." *Shudder*
@@PatrickKniesler The only upside I see in this is the Wawa Empire would be united under one banner.
Working on this project was fun thanks for the opportunity to be a part of it Mr z
It was a pleasure, pal!
I worked on Superior and I am very thankful that this version was chosen over the voted upon design. I also like how the modification brings it more in line with the Huron design!
Enjoyed being a part of this project! I hope I helped make a positive impact on the designs that got picked!
Thanks for being involved, pal!
Just beginning this video I swear if you change Texas flag I am going to find you
I was about to say that 😂
Same, you beat my comment to the punch. Don't mess with our flag!
Post-Watch Edit: They slashed Texas into multiple states 🤢, and the Edwards Texas rump-state is just a lamer version of the iconic classic. The bonnie blue flag is cool on its own and doesn't need to be hamfisted into the Texas flag. If you wanted a Bonnie Blue/Texas flag, just use one shade of blue; Or, you could use the older Burnet flag. Their take was a wretched mix of two shades of blue with a dad gummed circle, sad!
Look, I took the crack at the Texas flag (specifically Edwards). Before Z took the final adjustments, I had the Texas flag almost identical to the original besides the white ring. I thought that was a fair addition. The addition of the ligher blue behind makes sense though. I can however see why it was dissatisfying to see what happened to Texas as a whole.
I have bad news about our flags
As a Pittsburgher that flag for Allegheny is just a hard no. The regional colors for our area would be black and gold. It's on the city flag and has been the colors of all our sports teams which are a huge part of our identity. Green just makes no sense for us.
The Stateballs scene's about to get a massive glow-up.
I really like all those flag designs that everyone did. Mr.Z, I would especially like to thank the designers for the Georgia and Carolina flags too. I would love to have some stickers of those flag designs to put on my truck. I glad to see that ya'll kept the St. Andrews design for the Southeast region too.
I'm very proud to have worked with Crusader on this project to make the Monroe flag. I feel the combination of our two designs not only shows the pride and history of the new state, but also our willingness as a populace to work together. Thanks for this opportunity!
As a Washingtonian I love the redesign of our flag. I legit hate looking at our flag. It's bad enough it's green and yellow (which you've shown can be done well on a flag), but the big, yellow George Washington face just makes it look terrible.
Fellow State Citizen! I helped approve this design for us, originally I designed Washingtons flag but deans version was much better 🙂
Glad you like it, pal!
I’ve always had a liking for the Flag of Washington. Maybe because it’s green instead of most states having a blue… but that’s just my opinion
Id 100 times prefer the flag on the video, though.
@@HistoricalAztec Well nice job for everyone who worked on it. big👍
I was rather happy with the borders assigned to my state, Kentucky, but feel as if the flag leaves a lot to be desired. Only makes sense that some aren't as good as others given the amount of very appealing flags you've mad. Good video!
Thanks, pal!
This was a really cool project and I’m very impressed with how cohesive yet distinctive these new flags are. And not just pretty designs but also meaningful ones. Well done all!
Thank you so much!
This was such a cool project! I think it would be really cool if there was an interactive version of the balkanized states map. It would be neat if the map of the balkanized states was overlayed with a current map featuring cities and geographical features. I live in an area that might fall in either Susquehanna, Westylvania, or Alleghany, and it would be nice to figure out where I would live in this version.
While I disliked a vast majority of these flags, especially the ones for my home state of Florida or its division in this case, as I would have opted to use more Spanish influence given the states history and even more so given that your "Florida" has St. Augustine within its borders.
That said y'all did have some pretty good ones like the one for Minnesota for example, which is leaps and bounds superior to the train wreck they recently adopted and the one for Washington is really good and certainly better than what they currently use.
Given what y'all did here maybe give a go at redesigns of the current boring blue plus state seal flags we got across the country, lord knows those desperately need to be redesigned to actually look distinct from each other.
Ok that Texarkana flag is just perfect. I love that blend of the Arkansas and Texas flags.
Don’t see why the lone star flag needed the color change around the blue.
Going to say the new Arizona flag is too much. Didn’t need the Burgundian cross added
Not a big fan of green but I know it was likely for my new home state of Ozark, overall the flag isn’t bad at all.
And as a now former Arkansas resident thanks to the realignment, I don’t like how much the diamond motif has been given to other states. It was a unique part of Arkansas and the identity. Vegas is fine because there is a reason for them to have a diamond, as well as every state formerly a part of Arkansas. With how many others have this design makes the diamond feel cheapened in meaning for the states that actually have a reason for it.
Well, as we said we were going to take a crack at EVERY flag, even the ones that are already pretty good.
If there's one thing that all Americans should be able to agree on, it's that most of our existing state flags are absolutely terrible. Their designers failed to understand the basic concept that a flag is supposed to be recognizable *at a distance*, and thus the level of detail appropriate for a state seal just doesn't work on a flag.
Though, I'd prefer to keep the Texas flag how it is.
I have a pretty good idea of a Kentucky flag irl: 15 Stars, 2 lines on top and bottom separating the 2 sets of stars, with a crest with a horse on its hind legs with the state flower below it. With a Cream White and Ivory color scheme or Cream and Blue scheme, or all 3. It’s a design I’ve been needing to visualize and share to hopefully make it into an official state flag.
Just checking in to make sure the VT republic flag gets love, it did I’m good.
Heck yeah it did.
I had fun with this! Thanks for the credit
Absolutely! I was happy to have you involved!
@@MonsieurDeando you know what programs are websites are used to create the flags? I’ve been looking to get into flag creation myself but don’t know what to use.
These flag designs are perfection! Simplistic, yet easy on the eyes 🤩
Glad I got to witness the Server flag designs
New York flag redesign is my favorite.
As a Hoosier, I approve of the flag designs
Really like Utah's and idaho's flags.
Idaho probably gave us the most trouble, but it came together really nicely!
While I do not like some of the designs, the video was still great! Your narrating is decent and understandable. I do like the muted colour palette more on the northern states. Pretty nice!
Love your content man! Keep up the good work 😊😊😊❤❤❤
You bet!
@@MonsieurDean cool
beautiful flags, especially Idaho, Michigan, and Scandamerica
The midwest trio are a good bunch.
Great video! (I have been trying to think of something more thoughtful to say but I can't seem to find the right words so hopefully these will do)
Thanks for doing my video idea! (Not sure if you were already going to do it)
Great video. 👍 Can you do a video talking about the government in Starship Troopers (The Book not the Movie) and if it is viable in real life?
These definitely aren’t as overly simplistic as a lot of flag redesigns out there which I do appreciate. I actually disagree with the flag people that a good flag by necessity must be easy enough for a child to draw.
The Monsieur Z character is looking rather fine
Imo the California flag is just not it, and the Texas flag should’ve just been kept as the original, and the superior flag looks a little weird, but the rest are just phenomenal. Litterally in love with most of these flags ngl
Imo just a few knitpicks, I think the blue and green on Vermont’s flags could use a little more contrast, and I feel a darker blue could go with Chicago’s flag cuz like I live in Chicago we a hard ass city I just don’t think the baby blue fits in
I think Chicago's flag is great the way it is, though I don't mind the new wavy line design
Nice video!
Watching this video wishing the states had even half the creativity to make flags like this 😔
I hate it when people use a red stag to represent deer in the US. It’s neither an elk nor whitetail
Great video !
What program did you use in the making of these (and your many other) flags?
Don’t tell me AE… hate the subscription model…
Petition for Monsieur Z to run for president and actually enact the balkanisation proclamation
Nice work but i don't think you can improve the OG Arizona flag
These flags are so cool and I love them. I’m not sure about the “new states” and redesigned borders though
Maine's original (1901?) flag will be on the referendum next November. I hope most Mainers will vote to change it back. 🤞🤞🤞
Can we get a what if the US had 13 commonwealths like in Fallout one step above the state but one step below the federal government.
Maybe
@@MonsieurDean Really hoping.
I love the barn quilt design for the kentucky flag.
I had fun making those flags
Oh my these were beautiful... I wish some of these were true. I thank you for making this video!
The US state lines are not arbitrary east of the Mississippi. The borders are built along waterways with the concept being that every state has access to the ocean through some means. Oklahoma still has this concept along with states along the Missouri river. West of the Rockies it becomes more arbitrary based on what the state wanted and railroads. The Colorado river still connects a few states technically (not really any more) to the ocean. Those states being Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado.
I live in the east, the borders are better but they definitely aren't good to say the least, I mean just go to any area immediately near the great lakes and tell me it makes logical sense for the Chicago metro to be split among three states.
Whatever flag your guy was holding in the thumbnail is fire
That’s a NY flag in US of Z colors
@@MonsieurDean Fire flag
After watching this video, I must say that this new Michigan flag design is far superior to the one you had in that previous community post. Can’t say I like the color scheme though.
As someone who lives in the Okie part of Amarillo, I fully approve of our flag. Pretty dope tbh
These are awesome, love the reference to the famous "Doug Flag" on Washingtons new flag
Naturally!
Am I the only person that noticed Austin doesn't get shown till the bit at the end showing the flag in the state?
I saw a lot of State redesigns but these are definetly the best
Could you do Canada's provinces & territories next?
The fact this actually makes sense!
I would love to have any of the three separated New York flags replace our current one
As a guy from Iowa, I can say I like yours more than the official one
Born and raised in San Diego and those 3 cities seem rather arbitrary. There are several other cities in the county whose presence on the flag could be argued for. Why those 3?
Utahs flag went too hard
We need the American flag as well.
Or video for many variants based off this scenario.
8:29 Amazing video! US of Z! My favorite flag was tye new mexican one! Keep up the amazing work🔥🔥🔥🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Video idea: What if NATO didn't intervene in Yugoslav war
love the flag with the white ripples
It’s interesting to see the Midwest or the region around Michigan, they have a gold/orange & /White/Blue design, it also was used by the Netherlands as the old flag
Do you sell the idaho flag? 🥺
12:17 looks better then what we ended up with.
Very good flags
I'm just here for all the Unionists tears because they'd live in a state with a Confederate style flag.
What if Europe, Middle East, America and Africa had adopted the cult of Makima, Revy, Cutie Honey, Marin Kitagawa, Trixie Tang, Judy Neutron, Marge Simpson, Wendy Corduroy, Lois Griffin, Sailor Moon and Maddie Fenton instead of Abrahamic shit?
Santa Anna’s flag ain’t bad but the name is still atrocious
The inspiration for the Alabama flag was the Spanish Governor's flag. Not the Scottish flag. The southern 3rd of the current state was a part of the Florida colony at one point.
11:02 I like my flag (Indy)
As an Idahoan, I think you pretty much summed up Idaho, I dont agree with how you split Idaho up, Greater Idaho pretty much has all of the regions that I would consider to be the same culture as Idaho, but I like the flag
Edit: the Greater Idaho where it takes half of Oregon and Northern Cali
Can you do another video where you just redo the actual state flags??
Might need a rework of the Tennessee flag. Each starvis a symbol of the three regions in the state. The Bluffs ("Hatchie") in the west, hills central, and the western mountains ("Franklin").
LOL, as a Delawarean, I can’t decide if I should be offended or on board with my state not existing anymore
I really like Tidewater
Minimalist with nice colors, in Canada our provincial flags are pretty good I must say.
I would love to see an interactive map website for this. These would make for a great mid-west/continental US alternate history game such as Hearts of Iron 4 or even role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons if set in a medieval/renaissance era
"That's what you did to my state of Nevada flag" ? 😲🤬😂
Las Vegas flag is pretty cool ! 👍
Really good flags if a little cartoony
Can you now theory craft a situation where the states reconsolidated into each other
3:24 does anyone else think that New York looks like L’manburg and New Jersey feels like Las Nevadas?
JJ McCullough should do a flag video reacting to your video
As an El Pasoan- if you took the New Mexico flag, which they are rightfully extremely proud of, and gave it to us you would be starting a possibly eternal war
10:48 Note: the Sunflower symbol is on the Kansas STATE flag; the Kansas CITY flag has a fountain design. (As it is the city of fountains)
the NYC flag is the best out of these, it's so simple yet fits NYC perfectly
I like the Ozark flag a lot
These flags are pretty nice and I really appreciate the input. America certainly needs to redesign its state flags. My only criticism is the southern flags. There is no reason why we should include confederate imagery and symbolism in the flags of these states, especially considering the confederates betrayed the nation and fought for the preservation of slavery.
