- The family of soccer star Julia Grosso says they're ecstatic that she was able to score the winning penalty kick for Team Canada. The women's soccer team secured the gold medal win against Sweden on Friday morning at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

If there is someone people should talk about is Labbé, that goal keeper did the most wonderful job. She saved a lot penalties.
Exactly! Cant wait to see more interviews from her in the coming days. Does anyone know if she got the Golden Glove? I cant find that anywhere. I knew Canada had this in the bag when her smile never wavered. She watched as her teammates missed their PK's and just sipped water and smiled. Her smile never wavered even when Sweden scored on her. If your opponent is calmly smiling, you know you're in trouble LOL. Hell, she helped me relaxed. Canadian team has had a calm steady self belief all tournament long, I'm not surprised by this result at all. So happy for them. I hope she stays around for the next world cup.

Rose's penalty was jaw dropping. Such a perfectly placed kick under pressure. I could watch that on repeat for a solid 3 hours

The biggest hero is Labbe the goal keeper. She was always confident with the knowing smile and seemed to be able to see through the head of the opponent which way she was about to kick. The second biggest hero is the crossbar.

A good goalie forces players to shoot closer to the crossbar. So even those misses are actually part of being a good goalie.
@@my3dviews Exactly. Also, on the first penalty shot, the Swedish player hit the post because she knew she had to go for a perfect shot to beat Labbé.
@@midgicegg874 Right, I meant post and crossbar. The goals that went in were all close to either. The ones that weren't were stopped by Labbé.
She was absolutely phenomenal!

As a big fan of the Canadian women's national team and the Italian men's national team, I couldn't help but think that the name "Grosso" taking a penalty kick in a big final is always a good thing. :)

After all, Rose's goal was more important, because missing meant losing the game. If Grosso missed, Canada would still have about 50% probability of winning.
Anyway, Grosso will have a great future with the national team.
And Canada had a 50% chance of winning after Rose's goal, so the difference between her scoring and missing was 50%-0%=50% chance for a Canadian win. The difference between Grosso scoring and missing was 100%-50%=50% chance for a Canadian win, so they were both equally important.
@@tahaghassemi2381 not true at all rose had to score or we lost period. After she made it we had a 50% chance sure but if she hadn’t made it we would have had 0% to win as the shootout would have been literally over.

Assuming that Canada and Sweden have an equal chance of winning in general, the probability of Canada winning given Rose missing was 0%, given Rose scoring,50%, given Grosso missing, 50%, and given Grosso scoring, 100%. So in both cases, the difference in the probability of Canada winning between the player scoring and missing is 50%.

And if Fleming hadn’t made her PK in the PSO giving Canada a 1-0 lead, Sweden would have won the kickoff, the game and the gold medal with a 2 to 0 insurmountable lead. Rose wouldn’t have had the opportunity to make a tying PK if Fleming hadn’t scored.

Julia's genius was well hidden. It looks like any old shot that scored. But behind that shot was observation and intelligence. She noticed that Lindahl was able to stop shoulder high and high shots (except for Rose's superbly executed one), but was weak on low shots. She also knew that she needed to add a lot of power to the shot as Lindahl would very likely get to it otherwise.
Sure, it was just any old shot that scored. But yet, it wasn't.

Yep. Compare Grosso’s kick to Jonna Andersson’s which took place just before. To me, they looked very similar. Andersson’s PK attempt was blocked and deflected by Labbe, who guessed rightly where the ball would be kicked, too. Grosso’s PK attempt went where Lindahl thought it would go and she made hand contact with the ball. But she could not block or deflect it. The ball ricocheted off her and went straight to the top of the net. Unblockable, undeflectable, unstoppable. Not even Labbe could have prevented that ball from going into the net. All that time in the weight room getting fitter and athletically stronger paid off dividends for Julia Grosso.
Sweden was happy to beat the all time greats USA women , but they didn't know Canada was coming at them , nice job Canadian girls ...
