- My 1988 Volvo 740 wagon had a breakdown after being in heavy rain. Cranked but wouldn't start, so I attempt to find out why..

cars are nightmares at times!! amazing how it can do nearly 1000 miles in one trip just fine then suddenly decide to die. Old cars really have personalities and souls especially volvos.
Yeah! There was plenty of heavy rain on the road trip too!
"come on you old fker lol"..i split my sides lol...glad it started.
Been driving my 89 240 everyday for a year drove it across the US in the dead of winter no issues so far.
Elsa is trying to tell you that she's not a working girl anymore Sledge! She's now a refined lady.
😀 Feels like it
Wow what a sigh of relief getting it started in the end.
I had some old ford that refused to start if it was moist outside. Read up on it and apparently it was a really common problem. People begging for help in the forums would just get the reply:
"Did you leave it out to dry in the rain?"
Good fun having a car that literally won't run if there's any bit of moisture or rain outside.
She was just nervous at her first day at work. Halfords do some good de humidifiers to help keep windscreen clean in the mornings as all they wet kit we carry makes the air so humid in the autumn and winter the condensation is bad! They are called 'Classic - Car Dehumidifier' and can be 'recharged' by drying in oven or on a radiator. Good luck, weather hasn't been great lately - hopefully dries up soon!
Thanks man, I was worried about the wetness inside!
@@Involvod I have only used 1 last night and it seemed to stop the windscreen condensation but I will give it a few days before saying it defo works.
i had just the exact same issue on my b230f at rainy day or moisture conditions, i replaced cap and rotor for bosch and new ngk wires, problem solved.
Your previous comment about wanting to keep the cars in a nice dry garage provided a nice bit of foreshadowing for your problems today. I'm glad you were able to overcome them.
Great point! 😄
Aww poor Elsa she was just having a moment! Volvo will always get you home 👍
These cars like to be used. It is a working car, they all are. It was very wet yesterday, and the dsy before, and the day before🤣
I’ve got a 740 carb estate the Achilles heel is deffo the distributor always carry new rotor and cap .
No way is Elsa too old for grafting. There's a guy round here who carts his ladders around on the roof of a 1966 Morris Oxford in all weathers. I kid you not.
On my 1996 940LPT it was the in tank fuel pump. £80 for Bosch pump off ebay and spent 6 hours total removing and refitting. For peace of mind also replaced the crank sensor, ignition module on inner wing and fuel pump relay.
usually when that happens it's a ground location. I sanded them down and sprayed WD-40 and that solved my problem.
Thanks!
Clearing the drainage channels is often overlooked.
I had exactly the same issue (including the piston slap) with a 740 i once had. Wd 40 worked perfect.
Mind The Fuel Pump Relay Is Behind The Radio
Love the videos! I always get excited when a notification for a new one pops up, keep up the great work!
Thanks! Will do!
My 740 recently decided it'd no longer start when hot. Chose a time when me and the girlfriend were picking up a sideboard in it, obviously...
Seems to be issues with the fuel metering system and also potentially a dead accumulator. All good fun dismantling these things in winter...
Of course! 😄 Good luck with it man I hope you get it sorted 👍
Bridge Out Pins 87/30 Runs Constant Or Pull Cover Off And Manually Operate Relay
A handy thing to keep in the car is one of those spark lights that you can clip between a spark plug and its cap.
Checking the plug itself against the block isn't much more work and a plug wrench is part of the minimum toolset anyway imho.
We had an '87 GLE that ended up with a strip of duct tape covering that gap between the bonnet and the bulkhead panel for the exact same reason.
Always thought it was silly moving the dizzy from its location on the block.
Yeah, I'm thinking of moving it back!
I have the same problem with my 2x 240s , when parked over or near bare ground . Won't start , no sign of damp , but bonnet open to dry it out , usually clears the problem . They flood very quickly aswell , my cars are 1986 carb , and the other 91 injection , and both suffer same prob over bare ground , etc . On the 240 there is a wiring connection block in the engine bay just under the scuttle that can get moisture in that can cause this has water runs off the windscreen .
I had an 82 245 with the Chrysler ignition box. Every single time I'd try to start it when it was rainy or damp, no go. Every damn time. No idea why or where.
The same thing happened to my G-reg 740. Glad shes sorted fella! Imagine the electrical nightmare it would have been on something modern?
Oh yeah, side of the road fix unlikely!
Gracias por estos vídeos, ayudan a muchos de nosotros al rededor del mundo.
Gracias!
I also call my old Volvo a shitbox when I drive it. I still love her though.
Just had a no start in my girlfriend's 240. Rain got in the leaky windshield and soaked the fuel pump relay. Slow drip just in the wrong spot. Then one day no fuel. Drained the battery too. The relay was burning hot. Not related but definitely seems like water and old electrics seem to cause no fuel/no spark situations on these and can be hard to find or even know if you've fixed it
Crazy what can happen sometimes!
Tach didn’t seem to jump when you first tried it. Had a similar issue when my hall sensor was intermittent. I would deffo take a look at that as it can fail slowly sometimes! Would be a good idea to replace the dizzy seals on the shaft too.
Replaced my hall sensor and hasn’t happened since
Thanks for the tip!
I was thinking that it would have to do with glue... Because that fixes everything on a red block right? I guess we get a video how to fix hood seals with glue. Lol glad your up and going
Haha looks like it!
When you crank the rev counter didn't move. I say ignition problem.
The actual seal you touched IS the problem. Clean it up and re-install it with some RTV behind it so no water can drip between it.
Also rain water can collect between the red cap and the Black cover cap. This causes spark energy 6o leak to ground. (= no spark at the plugs!) Remove that black cap and leave it OFF. It serves NO purpose what so ever.
Things i would keep in the car as spares: a known good crank sensor and a known good fuel pump relais.
Great tips, thanks 😁
100% - just had this happen on my 89 740 after a full car wash. the cowl seal had a gap - filled with silicone and problem solved.
My 940 used to have difficulty starting if it was parked on a slope when the tank was low on fuel.
Totally sympathise with the old girl I have a breakdown every time I have to go to work may be an idea to seal the ht leads with purpose made ign sealer spray or if not silicone spray can also be used on the coil
Haha 😂 Thanks for the tip!
I had this problem with a petrol 740, so I ended up getting a 940 diesel - problem solved 😁 I think it would have been better to leave the distributor where it was, and not put it at the end of the camshaft
I'm thinking about swapping it over onto the block!
Been there brother.
Crank position sensor. Some peeps keep an extra in their glove box just for this reason. It'll happen again with more frequency until a full on no-start situation. Also, do not seal your cap with rtv, its a vented cap. It has three vents. there is no design flaw. Only a bad hood seal and a cap that could use a new rubber "seal". But I'm sure your issue is CPS sensor. Cheers mate.
I did wonder that! Thanks buddy
@@Involvod 🤙🏻
My 740's been 'having a moment' for just over a year now. It's running so badly that I've only driven it 20 miles since I had it re-MOT'd in the summer. I suspect that the main fuel pump is dodgy, going by the symptoms the car is showing, but I haven't had the time or motivation to fit the replacement Bosch pump I bought in September :/
It's a bit of a pain of a job, not cheap either those pumps are they!
@@Involvod I paid just under £60 for mine, as I got a £20 discount voucher from eBay. It seemed sensible to go down the OEM quality route at that price :)
The main thing that's put me off replacing the pump until now is the fear that replacing it won't actually make any difference to the car's running issue.
This probably isn’t it, but my 940 which has always started and run perfectly…just once did that exact thing. Turned out to be the fuel pump relay on its way out.
Good point! Thanks 👍
I would try the engine ECU temp sensor, had exact same thing on my 940, it causes the engine to flood by putting the choke on if you will, i stuck my foot to the floor and it started, dont think there was enough in the dizzy cap to stop it starting
Thanks, I did try the temp sensor (tested it has the correct resistant too) but it's still the same 🤔 I'm thinking about trying the MAF sensor next...
I bet it´s the culture shock of leaving Germany.
😂😂😂
Did you ever figure out what caused her to refuse service when you were at the car wash with the Misses? Seems like the same problem to me.
That was the 940 Turbo, but yeah that's why I went straight for the distributor cap as it seemed to definitely be the issue on the 9
@@Involvod Oh right, I got that mixed up then.
If a new distributor gasket doesn't fix it it has to be some stupid little thing like a corroded ground connection or a dodgy wire somewhere. Hate these kind of issues, such a pain to troubleshoot.
So do you live in england now or is it just temporary
I live here now 🙂
She wants to go back home !!
I have to admit she's not impressed with all these hills! Berlin was nice and flat for a naturally aspirated auto
Wash Out With Brake Cleaner Let It Disperse Moisture Dries Out Bone Dry
did you buy her in berlin?
Yes 🙂
CPS?
Definitely could be 🤔
Bet Lilly wouldn’t have this problem. Lol
Probably water into the distributor
