  • While Katie is working from home (thanks pandemic19), I am staying outside and out of her hair, lucky for me its prime foraging season. In this video I identify two different types of food that grow here on our property naturally. Both Arrowleaf Balsamroot and False Solomans Seal are historical food staples in the diet of First Nations people who have lived on this land LONG before we have. This is part one of a two part series, and in the next video I will show you how I prepared these two treats.
As always, make sure you do research before foraging for yourself, it can be very dangerous. Many plants have a toxic look alike.

I haven't done foraging before... making pine needle tea twice doesn't count LOL & I don't like to guess about what is edible and what isnt... please consider publishing a well- illustrated foraging guide... with color pictures... there are books out there with decent structure drawings but no color or poisonous look-alike info... in these times it would likely be a big hit. Thanks so much for the vids

I have here in the mountains of California. Although I had my mom with me and she grew up in the country in Japan. We came across some wild fern that’s really great to eat. I still don’t know what it’s called but I know what it looks like.
My mom said it’s easy to find wild food but you need to know what you are looking for to be safe.
Just like it was stated, there’s a lot of toxic things that look like the good stuff.

You should totally learn. Check out your local bookstore for some plant books or start asking people if they know about foraging. "Lone Pine" has some awesome books on medicinal and edible plants

Great video! Do you guys have any recommendations for reliable foraging books? So far we’ve only foraged for morels and some common berries.
