- Although Ulquiorra didn't receive a backstory in the manga, Kubo created him one for the third databook. In this video we'll take a look at Ulquiorra's backstory 'not be, but be', and attempt to decipher what it means for this melancholy Arrancar.

Ulquiorra, to me, was such an interesting and complex character compared to a good half of the other espada, so recieiving a backstory at all was such a treat to say the least :)

At 7:25 you say that he hurts himself to try to feel something. I always interpreted that wound as him not simply leaving his brethren, but killing them, most likely in act of self defense.
Pretty ironic that Ulquiorra only believes in his eyes, when he is a bat arrancar; an animal synonymous with being blind
Well I may be wrong, but I’ve gathered that bats are actually only sensitive to light, but have incredibly accurate eyes. Atleast some species. Probably should fact check it.

It's sadly ironic that he died just as he understood the meaning of the heart with Orihime's influence. He was easily one of the most interesting and badass Espada. Arrancar are typically violently power mad, others flat out reject Heuco Mundo's kill or be killed state of affairs, Ulquiorra embodies that world's dark despair. Still at least he got a trickle of light in those final moments.

maybe its good, i cant imagine someone as bad ass as ulquiorra as some pillar for ichigo to fight someone strong
I interpret this as more of a look into how all hollows feel in general. They’ve all found some way to fill that void. Ulquiorra didn’t.. He couldn’t really make sense of his surroundings or his own existence and may have originated in Hueco Mundo rather than being a powerful soul that hollowfied and became a Menos. Thematically this works for Ulquiorra because he grows attached to his identity as a hollow a being whose emptiness is a defining characteristic of its existence, even keeping abilities that most hollows discard like his regeneration factor and lashing out at anyone who contradicts what he perceives to be his nature.
Another interpretation of his bloody arm is that he killed those other hollows. And if you look at the picture after the one of the arm, you see a few blood splattered on his face and neck. And those don't look like he injured himself, but rather he killed something else and the blood prayed on him. Also, in an earlier panel... doesn't it look like the other Hollows are closing in on him?

Interesting how he believed in only what he could see, but ended up following Aizen, a man who could show him anything.
Great observation. It's interesting too that so much of Las Noches is a lie, from the fake sky to their almost manufactured civilisation. And yet Ulquiorra seems to buy into it.

I've always felt the chapter was more of a metaphorical representation of how Ulquirroa was able take control of the Vasto Lorde body and the tree represents Aizen and the Hogyoku giving Ulquirroa a purpose and meaning.
The thing with the dots actually have a deeper meaning.
In his backstory there was a light dot surrounded by darkness which shows he was lost in the darkness, in this nothingness with only a white dot of light and feeling. And after his death or while his death he was surrounded by light and emotions with only a black dot left, representing his hollow hole and just underlining how much he has changed
Orihime was such a blessing, honestly. I dont doubt she treated everyone with respect and kindness even though she was being abused and tossed around. She not once resented them or blamed them.
I still don't get why people hate her so much if there was anyone like her irl they wouldn't be treated like that
@@anti4107 I think people hate her the same reason Kubo portrayed her story in the manga, like the girls cutting her long hair mayhaps because of the color or the attention she was getting from boys. (Shes pretty I like her hair too hah especially Fullbringer and TYBW arcs) The other one with the Arrancars here hating her good intentions. As we learned from the arrancars they were jealous and insecure, they simped for Aizen and felt threaten she was p much the center of attention now. Once Aizen betrayed them I'm glad they came around and realize Aizen was using them and she just happened to be there used by him too, not to make them miserable.
The other reason I think people dont like her is because the anime did a very poor job with her. Anime shipped Rukia with Ichigo so they shafted Orihime as an annoying idiot even though shes not. One of the top students if not a bit quirky and strange but that doesnt mean dumb. So some of the blame definitely goes to the anime. The manga/Kubo handled her much much better

Damn, I actually feel bad for the guy. He had no friends or family, was deaf, numb, and walked around the place for King knows how many years. And he liked the tree because he saw himself in it; dead, empty, and meaningless.
Very sad y he had to die I can see him in blood war having feelings but no kibo had to kill him

I don't think that Ulquiorra harmed himself in that panel to feel something. It looked like aftermath of a battle against other hollow. And it's not obvious that the other mocked him. It was just shown that they took notice of his differences. They could have mocked him or they could have gone "ooh that guy looks tasty"

Agreed also because of the fact that pain can only be known if you have some kind of inkling of it whereas ulquiorra's blank slate state didnt even know the very concept of sense or pain.

I think Ulquiorra was born in the old world, that is, before Shinigami Nobles/Soul King split the dimensions. Which may explain how unusual he was (born in a pit directly as a Vasto Lorde without going through the other stages, as well as having Segunda Etapa). Simply, the rules were different back when he was born compared to the more 'modern' Menos who have to evolve via cannibalism.
If anyone can confirm this, that would be great.

I love an interesting back story. Some are meant to make you think others cry and some leave you unsure about many things. This one made me think and also unsure which I think was the point.
Born in a pit with “Comrades” and curious, suffering even. He ends his journey in a mound instead of a pit, alone instead of with comrades, finding peace instead of suffering. I believe all these opposites is poetic and that the idea of this mound tearing him apart and damaging him (making him a natural arrancar) is a way of him achieving Nirvana, completing his journey as a hollow. Maybe this act of reaching Nirvana is kind of like a Minus soul (which hollows are minus) becoming a neutral soul or maybe even a positive in some way. Something to think about…
What i find cool about Ulquiorra's back story is that its an adaptation of a song: Moonshield by In Flames.
Apart from Urahara, he's the best and most intriguing character in Bleach!

In the very first episode it is also Ichigo who said to Rukia that he too if he doesn't see it with his own eyes he doesn't believe it.

What I find quite interesting is that after he came into existence. He can only BUT knows he should also have other senses.
Maybe adjuchas start ganging up somewhere eating each other in crowds, in a near bottomless pit, and whoever’s left becomes the Vasto Lorde, maybe if a particularly “empty” bunch of hollows group up sometimes they’ll eat each other until there’s no one left, and from whatever bits of blood, gore and spiritual energy reside in that place eventually they manifest as new, more powerful hollows, some of which may be Vasto Lorde (with an entirely new personality and identity, with little to no memory of what came before, the line about being pressed into existence by darkness itself made me think of how it could feel to be born with adult faculties and physique, whilst still being a newborn with just instincts to go by) while the others remain as just malformed shades, leading whatever’s stronger coming out of there kills all the others before leaving to do their own thing and leaving all that nasty hollow gunk just laying there maturing in the darkness, waiting to be used as breeding ground for more horrors.
This could explain why some vasto lorde are more powerful/arrogant/depressed than others, as they were generated by stronger or a greater numbers of particularly nasty hollows. I could go on on greater details and complement with some stuff we seen on the other Espadas’ flashbacks but this is quite long already so, cheers.

Ulquorria is easily my favorite Bleach character, and even after all this time he’s still on people’s minds! Gotta love Bleach. I wonder if his Second Release comes from him being a born Vasto Lorde? His Second Release is basically him becoming what he hadn’t been when he was a Hollow. Either way, there’s no question he was the secret strongest Espada. Aizen left Ulquorria to guard Las Noches because he knew Ichigo would eventually fight him. Why purposely plan for that confrontation and see if Ichigo was worthy of fighting him if you don’t set him up against your greatest weapon? Don’t even get me started on his character development! **Chef’s Kiss**
well espada 6 and above were all vasto lorde
also considering how he was dominating ichigo in his first transformed state compared to say grimmjow
it seems he was up against a foe that was just so much weaker then the top 3 espada and honestly his second form never really seemed to do any better then his first transformation
he went from moving and attacking so fast ichigo could not block....to doing the same exact thing
each espada has a special power and espada 4 really lacks a great one so i would still put stark and barragan over him
i would also point out espada 1-3 never really at any stage of there fights go 100 percent they kind of die being shonen badguys who lower there guards like plot

In second release,he destroys ichigos mask WITH HIS CLAWS and smacks him into 3 pillars. He was clearly faster and stronger in segunda etapa. He also has lanza del relampago,which he does not in first release.

I'm actually really upset that he never came back, even in a flashback. They seemed to just forget about him after the fight and it was a bit disappointing. Thanks for at least showing my favorite character some love. Was a bit refreshing because it's been so long since anyone has really talked about him

he died, why would he come back in the story? reviving characters for no reason and when their arc is closed is bad writing. also what do you mean by "it's been so long since anyone has really talked about him" hes like a common subject in the fanbase.
Im glad he's dead, if they were to bring him back then his final words and death would have been way less impactful just like it happened with Byakuya.

I've been telling everybody about you I think it's amazing work you do. It would be cool if you did some theory videos like maybe some bankai restoration theory I have a few! I even thought of a few places where they could have brought ichimaru back period Dean is far and away my favorite character in the entire story and I think Kubo really missed a good opportunity in the war Arc where they could have brought him back I have a NEat neat theory on how it could have been done and not look broken! it also makes u question the process of a Vasto Lorde’s creation. we see Grimmjow try for decades to exceed an Adjuchas only to never evolve into a Vasto Lordes. ulquiorras backstory makes me believe Vasto Lordes are born just as a basic regular hollow would be

Great video... FYI in hueco mundo there is nothing to eat other hollows. Hollows are condensed reiatsu , which is delicious to them. Minor hollows do not need to eat, they get enough reiatsu to eat from the atmosphere

5:31- The Vasto Lorde being entirely black lends to the theory that White was actually a pseudo Vasto Lorde pretty well on top of its humanoid form.

I always loved Ulquiorra from the first time he appears on screen. The best moment was when you came to learn that he was the only espada with a second release.

That’s the thing. Considering Ulquiorra gets a massive amount of dense reiatsu he might very well be the only espada capable of being unaffected by kyoka suigetsu.

@@williamquantrill9076 no actually you can actually reach vasto lorde status if you keep eating but the difference is Grimmjaws group eat hollows together so yeah their all eating but their not each eating a hollow because they share the parts but Grimmjaw is already close to that stage because he can physically change himself into a Jaguar while the other people in his group just naturally change and have no control he chose that form because it’s easier to fight because your smaller and more quicker than a big hollow
To be fair, Ulquiorra's Nihilistic World View isn't as bad as it seems. Perceiving something that you cannot see and what you can no longer or cannot really feel is what i believe to be alot of what we were at some point in our lives. For me, personally, Ulquiorra embodies what i would've been eventually if i had not found my own solace and the true meaning of what it meant to be alive, what it meant to have purpose.
I find it funny how Ulquiorra kills ichigo twice when grimmjow couldn't do shit.
I think I get why ulquiorra didn't want to be human because of emotions are a weakness and something he sees anyone can manipulate, or maybe hates because of how horrible they are and the other hollows with he when his was born were nothing but guiltness pigs and human were in his point of view very selfish to not try to think what's best for their friends and family and be ready to fight so they won't get caught in the cross fire.

To be honest he isnt a villain in my eyes. Iam writing a video on how bleach is the manga for tortured souls. I didnt put 2 and 2 together.

I can't say I ever loved this character to me he felt way too much like Byakuya 2.0
The whole nihilism angle was pretty cool though and his dynamic with Inoue and Grimmjow were pretty interesting and engaging.
At one point I actually thought that he would be the one to rebel against Aizen with Grimmjow as the misdirect not for typical reasons but just a rejection of Aizen wanting ultimate power and to that extension purpose.
It was never clear to me why someone like him would follow Aizen, like did he think Aizen would give him purpose? I didn't get what the end game was with him in that regard.
He thought by helping someone acomplish their goals would give him purpose and meaning in life.
Ulquiorr as death hit me really hard you couldent tell if he was sad or content that he was gonna die

Interesting fact: Ul'Quiorra is Latin for "Whiny Goth Boy that Cuts Himself."
cifer = sifr in arabic = zero / empty / void, which explains ulquiorra's personality and quite possibly his real position in espada
maybe those vasto lorde are a hint that there are meaner, stronger hollows in hueco mundos pitts, and those that ended up in the surface were more civilized and weaker

Ulquiorra was one of the Espada I wish had survived. His death was powerful, but I think he could have added something more to the series if he had lived longer.

Am I the only one who thinks ulquiorra is one of the most underrated characters in anime or it's just me, see I used to think that he was your average emo anime villain who just have some complex, but as I look into the void of that is his world and what it's too him and his past, it made me wonder what happened to him when he died as a human that made him into a vaste lordeo it's that how you say it, anyway it might be a life of darkness's and sad and then wanted to be hollow that feels nothing at all, I don't think nothingness should be his aspect of death, tragic be a better fit for him.
If you think about it I wonder if stark and ulquiorra could be friends in hueco mudo.
