Your ink is awesome, and way more a part of your personality than having a prosthetic. We don't choose our limbs, but we do choose how we decorate our bodies and what those decorations mean to us. I love when people compliment my tattoos. It feels so much nicer than when they notice and want to talk about why I walk strangely. (I'm not an amputee, I just have MS)

This is it exactly! I love to compliment people's choices. Tattoos, piercings, shoes, hairstyles. If someone has decorated their mobility aid that's fun too. 😁
I try to talk about this a lot, because "I love those shoes!" is almost always a welcome compliment 😁 and it's so great to give people a reason to smile.

Decades ago I chatted with a woman who had a prosthetic left arm that she had had covered with a *paisley fabric wrap* on the forearm, with the hook free.
That turned it into a positive conversation piece and a thing of beauty.¹
These days with 3D printing it might be an idea to beautify your leg.
Prehaps go with something that matches and carries on the theme of your tattoos?
¹ I still remember it because it was so distinctive.. and being recently out of hospital and just walking again from a wheelchair everything was hyperreal.

I taught my son when he was small to rather approach, greet and respectfully ask when he sees a person with a disability or something he doesn't understand, instead of pointing and staring or loudly asking me. That way we met a lady who lost her leg in a motor cycle accident, a wonderful little girl with alopecia who spoke to him for almost an hour, a couple of people in wheelchairs who were all very kind and patient with my son's intrusion... and a guy with full body tats who sat with my son for almost two hours explaining the story behind each tattoo! No regrets. I'm sure you would have also been great with him. ❤

Hey I was watching an old short where you couldnt sleep due to phantom sensations and wanted to offer an idea. Im sure youve tried this but if you havent theres a trick called mirroring, essentially you set up a mirror on your amputated limb so that you can only see your in tact limb. Then while moving your in tact limb imagine moving your amputated one. After a bit, Lets say you are feeling a phantom itch, scratch that part of your limb on your in tact limb while looking at the mirror. Its a cool trick my friend with an amputated arm uses whenever he has phantom pain / sensations. Hope this helps if you havent tried it yet! Good luck!

I did this as a religious commitment, but by far the best unintended side effect of it is that now instead of asking about my crutches or ask what my disability is, people mostly just ask about my bonnet. It's really rather fabulous, because I was really getting sick of people thinking they had a right to know my medical diagnosis just because I was a person existing in public with crutches.
