It amazes me how often this moment is interpreted as a kind gesture.

it was not marathon but a stage of a triathlon "league". The exahausted brother was about to win the "league". His brother had no chance of winning anything "but" the single event itself. Hence the heroic aid to his brother.
The brother in problem was actually set to run home on cruise control and win, but instead he made a fatal choice to speed up to get a better time. That caused his problem. Actually after the event his helping brother call him f***** idiot for not just run it home safe 😀

After that he won Olympic Gold in 2008 for Germany, the country of his wife.

They would show a the clip of this in my primary school assemblys. The teacher who showed it had had the same injury as him and said she couldn't describe the pain he must of had while he was running. I can't remember what it was exactly but its my favorite moment in sport!
