  • In 1921 Dublin, the IRA battles the "Black & Tans," special British forces given to harsh measures. Irish-American medical student Kerry O'Shea hopes to stay aloof, but saving a wounded friend gets him outlawed, and inexorably drawn into the rebel organization...under his former professor Sean Lenihan, who has "shaken hands with the devil" and begun to think of fighting as an end in itself. Complications arise when Kerry falls for a beautiful English hostage, and the British offer a peace treaty that is not enough to satisfy Lenihan.

I never heard of it either, 'til today June 24th '23. But aside from him killing the barmaid, the Cagney character was totally right. That was no peace treaty, it was a slavery pact, which is why the IRA regrouped.

I saw this at the time,1959, when I was 12 years old. I thought it was boring. Of course I was too young to understand what it was about. Even so, I remembered that and avoided watching this when it occasionally was shown on TV. How wrong I was to do that. It’s a fabulous movie.

Hello Moriah You many not know but for many years the Irish were called and classed as the blacks of Europe because of the cruel and brutal behavior of the British government, its army and their police, During the 50s,60s and 70s in the UK it was common to see signs outside lodging houses No Irish, Blacks Or Dogs allowed, when looking for employment the signs were No Irish & Blacks need apply, that also happened in the good old USA and that is a recorded fact. The Irish and Blacks were welcomed when people were needed to fight their wars and carry out works that other people did not want to do. The Black and Irish people are all proud people, they will not stand aside and let anyone abuse or talk down to them, they are a fighting people, fighting for the good of all mankind and fighting for own their rights.and just for started Muhammad Ali forefathers/mother came for Co Clare west of Ireland, President Barack Obama's Irish links to the Kearney family from Moneygall Co. Offaly Ireland .Jimi Hendrix had a mixed genealogy, which included African American, Irish, and Cherokee ancestors. This is not uncommon. His paternal great-great-grandmother Zenora was a full-blooded Cherokee from Georgia who married an Irishman named Moore, You see that we are all connected somewhere back along the line, the more people understand this the better for us all. You are more than welcome to feel IRISH on the 17th March or any other day of the year

Fascinating film, thanks for posting it,I can't understand why it's so little known, especially given its quality and it's fairly frank and balanced approach to such complex and grim events.it is sad to recall how much hope for peace and an end to violence there was, only to be followed by the Civil War and another 70 years of struggle and loss.I hope that Ireland can finally find the peace and prosperity such a noble land and fine people deserve in the 21st. century!

Good cast - even Sgt Wilson from Dad's Army. The Black and Tans were an obscenity - no film could possibly depict their atrocities in detail. The English have no right to be in Ireland. In WWl there was arguably military justification to stop the Germans landing there. Lloyd George and that disgusting piece of human garbage, Churchill, compelled Collins to accept a deal guaranteed to generate decades of misery. Not a bad movie to take on such a powerful, shameful and tragic subject.

      riga mortus
Your'e talking about the ruling-class English. The ordinary English in the mills of Lancashire, Yorkshire and the Midlands, suffered as much as Irish people and the Scots during the Highland Clearances.
As to the mention of Lloyd George: he was a Welshman who called Hitler a man of peace AFTER he'd written Mein Kampf.
If the English ruling class, backed by the ruling classes elsewhere in Britain, hadn't suppressed the Irish there would not have been an IRA. They made the problem.
Also Ireland produced many proud Brits--Parnell's accuser, Captain O'Shea was a staunch Brit. When the US broke away from Britain, many US Irish Catholics moved to Canada to remain under the Crown. Most Southern Irish did not back home rule. The Black and Tans forced Ireland's hands to become nationalists. Parnell, Eamon Ceant, and Padraig Pearce were Irish Protestants of Englishs stock as were the leaders of the United Irish movement such as Emmet and Wolfe Tone and Napper Tandy. The first Irish nationalist, Jonathan Swift, was of English Protestant stock.
Real history, as opposed to film sterotypes, tells the truth.

    • @zthetha
      @zthetha 9 років тому +3

Julie Horan As a Yorkshire man with Irish ancestry I can confirm that life was indeed grim for the working classes in the North but not as grim as conditions in Ireland. Lloyd George was - among other things - a consummate politician and recognised that Hitler did not want war with England - or anyone else and was simply restoring the land and dignity stolen by Versailles. WWll was Churchill's war or rather the war of his Zionist paymasters. He was their scaremongering mouthpiece.
The Jews - who declared war on Germany in the early 30s - had corrupted the social and institutional life of Germany and were being peacefully repatriated by the Germans. Hitler restored national pride to his people and cleaned up his country. He was not the first or only leader to expel Jews - England did it years before. I quote from Wiki:
"In 1290, King Edward I issued an edict expelling all Jews from England. The expulsion edict remained in force for the rest of the Middle Ages. The edict was not an isolated incident, but the culmination of over 200 years of increased persecution. Oliver Cromwell permitted Jews to return to England in 1657, over 350 years since their banishment by Edward I, in exchange for finance."
As for the repression of the barbarous English ruling class creating the IRA - they probably did. Well... it sort of justified their continuing presence there as 'peace keepers'.

Thanks for uploading this superb and historic film, which has superb acting by the incomparable Cagney and a slew of other first rate actors. Just a brief history for those who are not familiar with it. This film depicts the battles in the first half of 1921, when Northern Ireland was under British martial law and roughly a thousand men were killed on both sides. The film ends on the eve of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, agreed to in mid 1921 and signed in December, wen the IRA was suffering tremendous casualties, while the British Govt. concluded it could not end the battle by military force, which led both sides to agree to a truce. It was followed by a civil war between the "Cagney" supporters who wanted to fight to the end, and the opponents. Those supporting the peace won, and things settled down pretty much until the 1960's when the internecine religious battle was re-ignited, until the Irish-British Catholic-Protestant war was finally brought to an end with the Good Friday Accord in 1998, which was negotiated by US President Bill Clinton and his Secretary of State George Mitchell, and which has thankfully stood the test of time ever since.

Just on a point of inaccuracy the Black and Tans were never stationed in Dublin, it was the Auxiliaries (ex British Army officers) and far more brutal then the Tans

Their surname was Steptoe. He was Harold Steptoe and his dad was Albert Steptoe. The rag and bone company was called Steptoe and son.

That was Richard Harris in a supporting role as the character who brought the pistol to the bar. Funny how recently I saw an interview on YT of him from years back and he mentioned the Black & Tan War (nothing about this movie) which I had not heard of so I looked it up. Sometimes movies can do more than entertain.
