Anyone that believes they put this deal together over the weekend is delusional. OU has been off all season, the LA Times is reporting they were in talks as early as mid September. Tough to coach when you already have one foot out the door.

Glad he left, because you don't want a coach who's not all in. Oklahoma is not the greatest program, but the people will treat the coaches and their family like royalty for life. Also the players are remembered. There's no pro team to compete with. If a coach doesn't think $100+ million over a career is not enough (salary and endorsements), then they can go to USC.

Rich is right, he didn’t want to compete in the SEC. Look at Clemson-they run through the ACC almost every year and no one can touch them. Riley is thinking he can do the same thing at USC, roll through a pretty weak conference and compete nationally fairly quickly because outside of Oregon his only real competition is Utah. Utah is a good program and develops well with tough players but I think Riley would rather deal with Utah instead of Bama, LSU, Georgia, etc.

OU will compete. OU will win in the SEC - a lot. He just wouldn’t be winning 6 to 7 straight conf titles like he had in the Big 12. No doubt it's easier to compete in the Pac-12 so wouldn't doubt that's one reason, probably the biggest reason, and another reason could be the opportunity to build something himself. He took over Oklahoma in good shape and kept it in good shape, USC isn't in good shape and may have wanted the challenge to prove he could build something as well. Nick Saban a few years ago mentioned if he was younger he probably would have left Alabama so he could build some other program. Some guys enjoy building something up more than just staying, they have success, accomplish their goals and want a new challenge.

And watch OU will be 5th best in sec with their new HC, OU was unwilling to invest more resources like other sec top teams when Riley inquired to compete in sec, just wait until sec teams show OU they should’ve stayed in big 12 if they’re unwilling to invest more

The reasons to head to USC seem numerous. Not just money. Not just weather. Not just access to recruiting. Not just access to the playoffs. All of it together surpasses what staying at Oklahoma offered him. Not to mention OU fans' championship expectations are in for a rude awakening when they join SEC West competition. They will have to tolerate more losing.

If you can dominate the Pac-12, you can get your team into the playoffs. Oklahoma, as great as they are, have had a difficult time getting to the Playoffs. It would be even more difficult if it had to ensure wins against Alabama, Georgia, A&M, Auburn Old Miss and Texas. Next year it will just be Oregon, and probably Notre Dame. He will be a 10 win coach every year probably playing in the Playoffs or the the Rose Bowl.

He'll certainly get SC to the top of the Pac12 heap, but if SC fans want a NC...they better hope he gets better at developing players and instilling a "hard nose/physical" approach to defense...because he sure as hell didn't do that at OU.

As a lifelong Husker, I have always respected the Sooners. Maybe Riley was just following the money. Maybe he was nervous at the prospect of competing in the SEC? But I don't like the way Riley has handled this situation. He dissed the players, the fans, and Oklahoma. It is all about money and fame.

He had a serious talk about it with his team, I know some of the kids in that lockerroom. Also he owes nothing to anyone else its a job and he did what he thought was best for him and his family and that is the only people he owes anything.

Is it ridiculous? His excellent record is in the Big 12. He was handed a team with very few challengers. He left to go to a school with very few challengers. His "new challenge" he was looking for is the easiest path to nowhere with the most money.

There is competition for USC in the PAC 12. Oregon has become the somewhat dominant team in the conference over the past decade and Utah is definitely a rising power.
