Is this EXPENSIVE ? FISH and CHIPS in SWANAGE in WINTER
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 чер 2024
- Today I head to Swanage. It's out of season in January, ad many of the seaside food outlets are closed until springtime.
I do find some places open, and order small cod, chips and mushy peas. But the price leaves me a little taken aback, can it be justified? just feels a bit pricey!

Would you be happy to pay those kind of prices for that food?
Probably not l got a special deal in Exeter called hook fish and chips it was £7 for a small cod chips and a side and the cod was massive
Yeah, if it tastes good then yeah init,
@@noahstrainadventures3031 now that seems like good value, especially if you got a bigger portion than expected!
£10 is pretty steep for this time of year especially when it’s cold and there aren’t many grockles around. The Fish Plaice is definitely the most popular F&C place in Swanage, but back in the day when I lived there The Parade was the one of choice for locals.
@@timspencer3348 yeah, but a fish shop with a 3 hygiene rating gives me the jitters a bit!
Wimpy now there’s a blast from the past! I think I had my 5th birthday in the Wimpy in Walsall…. Now that is many many moons ago!! 😂 Top Video Greeno! Fish and chips by the sea 🌊 is a must! 😋 …..Smithy
Yeah a Wimpy was a real treat back in the day wasn’t it! I’m gonna go try it sometime, see if it is as I remember, or if it’s been left behind as a culinary relic. Fish and chips by the sea is indeed a must. Even better when the weather is decent, not in January drizzle! Twice the price of that chippy I went to in Torquay before Xmas though…
@@GreenoEats I did enjoy the Torquay videos Greeno…. Not been there in a long time. Totally agree Greeno. I’m sensing a Wimpey review 😉
Yeah, I will get down there at some point, could be an interesting one. Off to London back end of next week (filming plus watching West Ham v Bournemouth, looking forward to that!)
I used to work in Swanage about 20 years ago as a postman. Sometimes I went there for lunch and the guys in there would give me 2 pieces of cod (even though I only ordered 1). I remember once they gave me 3 pieces! I thought it was great.
Sounds like they were looking after you 🙂 Thanks for watching!
There are two common species of dogfish in the UK, the Lesser Spotted Dogfish and the Bull Huss. Both belong to the Catshark family. These saltwater fish are sometimes called Rock Eel or, if you're in a fish and chip shop, Rock Salmon. Dogfish are almost exclusively scavengers that prowl around on the seabed

That’s great information, thanks for that. Learn something new every day!
Great video mate, there's a Wimpy in my town, think I've been there 3 or 4 times in the last 10 years, it's always been great food but also very expensive but isn't everything. When you held the fish up to the camera I fully expected a gull to swoop down and nick it!
Plenty of people reporting local Wimpy’s now… glad to see they’re still going in the face of years of competition! Fortunately no gulls pounced on me, although there were quite a few about giving my lunch the eye!!
A Wimpy? Ohhh happy memories. ❤
I know right! I am gonna have to go try it sometime aren’t I!!
@GreenoEats in my day it was right posh to have a burger and milkshake there on a Saturday 🤣🤣🤣
Looks ok...our local chippy in wilt's does sit in cod chips peas and drink for £6.85 or take away fish and chips for £4.85.
Wow, that is a good price, drop me the name of the place if you like, might be worth me popping in if I am in the area!
Here in the far south of London, the average price for cod and chips from the chippie is around £18. That's with no extras like mushy pies. We have a Wimpy here and it is extremely popular. Open from 9am to 9pm, it is never empty. On a Saturday, it is always full and you're lucky to get a table.
Here in Dorset a regular cod and chips in most places is in the £11 - £13 range, which is strong enough, £18 is bonkers. What used to be a Friday night treat for the family costs almost as much as a weekly shop!! Interesting to hear that about the Wimpy, I'll have to give that one in Swanage a try, I bet the menu is still the same as back in the 70s!
For 18 GBP I would expect mermaid 😂
@@GreenoEats ...as a regular visitor to Dorset ( roughly 5 times a year) I can say hand on heart I've never bought fish and chips for £11 and know the area very well.
@@geebee6737 I base that on places I have used in the Poole/Bournemouth area, Lyme Regis and Weymouth. Where do you tend to go? Any recommendations?
@@GreenoEats ...we love Alexanders in Christchurch , The Fry Inn at Tuckton are good , Harry Ramsden's in Bournemouth overpriced and over rated....we've had fish and chips in Poole , Swanage, Weymouth , Isle of Portland and the list just goes on and on but never ever found them for £11 , we pay that much up North now
I can’t believe you saw a Wimpy! 😂
I don’t own a Delorean, so I have to assume it is really there in 2024 🤣
That looked good!
It was definitely tasty, although a bit more attention to detail and it could have been exceptional.
The cost of fish and chips has jumped up significantly so on reflection the price you paid is on a par with everywhere else. Looked lovely
Yeah, I guess that's it, prices in general are rising salaries are not. Fish and chips used to be a low cost Friday night treat if you couldn't stretch to a Chinese or Indian. Now for a family of 4 you're lucky to get change from £40 for a chippy tea. Sign of the times as you say!!
A chipper in Shepperton Surrey have put their price up for a lunch time special from £8 to £9, circa May 2024. So what do you get. Reasonable size fish and chips, a can of drink , mushy peas or Curry sauce. And people are out of the door, I wonder why.
That sounds like a very good deal indeed - certainly for that part of the world!
Oh great intro, and the beginning with the look around,
Yeah I like to mix things up a bit if I am out and about, a little feature on where I am for people not familiar with where I am. Glad you enjoyed it 😀
Good to see the Wimpy too! Swanage icon!
Seems there are still a fair few about. Gonna have to get in and review it sometime. Will it bring back happy childhood memories. Or be another of those things where the nostalgia is the best part about it?
We visit my mother up in Norfolk every few months or so, and usually on the first night we all have cod n chips.
January 2023, £6.80, March 2023, £7.60, September 2023 £9.80, Xmas time 2023 £11.60 and I walked out, can’t justify paying near on £50 for 4 of us.
January and March on a Friday night the fish shop was packed, waited near on an hour to get the order, September I was the only one in there on the Friday, Xmas time I walked in and no one in again, owner and the workers standing around chatting.
Very sad to see.
Personally I’m happy with paying around £7.50 for a decent cod n chips, that’s where I feel the price should be.
It's difficult isn't it. Businesses have to cover their costs, which as we know have been escalating. Energy and food prices especially. But Joe Public also feels the squeeze. As you say, £50 for a chippy tea simply isn't value. Especially as I proved recently you can do it for a quid a head (ok, not the same, but not 10 times worse!!)
that seemed pretty good VFM 😀
Having been around a few more chippies I think it was an ok price for right by the seaside!!
Are you using the new DJI Osmo Pocket 3 ??? Looks really good mate
I am Deano, quite the investment, but I think for the quality of the picture it's worth it. When I compare it to the old videos I made on my phone it's chalk and cheese. Although that fish and chips was quite the investment too ha ha!
@@GreenoEats Yeah it looks great, out of stock everywhere so i picked up the GoPro 12, regretting it now 😂
I ordered it in mid November, was about a 4 week leadtime on it. Got the creator combo with the mic etc. Cost a shade over £600, but Mrs Greeno stumped up most of it for my 50th 😉 So pleased with it, and I still don’t know half of its capabilities.
Hi Greeno, mad to see a wimpy still going,i think there's still one in Woking aswell, there's still one of those telescopes on the front in Charmouth, I'll see how much it is next time we're down there, cheers for another cool video.
Seems there are still a few Wimpy's around, mad they have kept going but completely under the radar. Gonna have to try it out!
Apart from the price those fish and chips looked pretty decent.
They were tasty, but not without fault. Quite a lot of scrappy chips, batter not as crispy as it could be. But quite delicious 😋
As a young man I lived in Canford Cliffs over the water, I might make a trip back for a decent fish and chips.
Canford Cliffs, very nice! Need some serious dough to live there these days, footballers live in some of the top end properties there now.
I think all mushy peas are dyed as raw dried marrowfat peas are white. They definitely looked very watery. Glad they were enjoyed. Chips looked spot on
There’s just something about those synthetic bright green looking peas which is off-putting to me. These were tasty, just needed a bit more mushing 🤣 The chips were great, well the ones that weren’t scrappy, got to have the crispy outside and soft centre, not just crispy!
Dried marrowfat peas are a very light green, or they used to be. Maybe times change. Soak them overnight in water with bicarbonate of soda. If I remember correctly, some off the shelf packs come with a tablet of Bicarbonate all ready to prepare them. Drain, wash and cook with a bit salt.
When cooking them, you can add a pre-boiled ham hock and some of the juices from the cooking. Now that’s a meal.
These days, I’ll wager that kind of food is pretty much extinct.
Fantastic video Greeno, another good one. 👍 how are you liking the new Dji Mic 2?
Thanks Gary! As for the mic, got it as part of the creator combo for the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Compared to the bluetooth mic I had for my phone previously it’s chalk and cheese. No complaints thus far, held up well in various conditions. Will be interested to see how it stands up in louder environments such as Spitalfields next week.
Awesome upload
Excellent Thumbnail Mr G Sir,
Thanks David 😀
I think it was a bit strong, although I do get folk have to make a living... but is it 10 times better than my £1 fish, chips and mushy peas???
Lucky them bloody seagulls didn't Swipe down init 😂
They’re aggressive little sods too, with no fear! I remember when the teenager was a toddler we went down Barry Island and she thought it was brilliant that they would swoop down and take chips from her outstretched hand.
😂😂
Where I live it is £15 plus but there is a chippy in a nearby town that does a £6 small portion offer at lunchtime. I was salivating looking at your meal whilst I was waiting for my sausage to cook. They took ages to brown but were very good, Lincolnshire ones from Lidl. No fat or water leaking out. Carrots, swede, mash and onion sauce. My stomach was rumbling all the time waiting and craving those fish, chips and peas, especially out on the front looking at the sea. The best way to eat them even though it's January. 👍
Fish and chips do taste different by the coast don't they, maybe it's the sea air 🙂 Your dinner sounds good mind, perfect for a chilly winter evening!
@@GreenoEats Eating out in the fresh air makes the food tastier. Yes my meal was substantial. Just got to wash up now! 🥴
@@denisemotley6639 well that's the advantage of my chippy lunch, zero washing up 👍
Seeing the flats above the Fish Plaice brought back memories that I absolutely won’t be sharing in your comments section about one New Year’s Eve in the late 90’s 😉
I dread to think (I am assuming that I am not suffering from some memory lapse and it's something I should already know about or remember?) 🤣
😂😂😂😂
Was I there? 🧐😂
Try Captain Cod in Hoddesdon for the best fish n chips. They come always at least in the top 3 in the country.
Thanks for the tip - will pop in should I find myself up that way!!
@@GreenoEats ok, it’s very good. Great channel btw, the algorithm found you
@@waldo197720 I do occasionally have to pick my other half up from Luton Airport, bit of a diversion but doable 😊 The algorithm remains a mystery to me, but I am glad it put my channel in front of you, and that you are enjoying it!
It's funny how seagulls always have tomato sauce on their beaks at the ready😂😂.
I’m surprised they are able to fly given the amount of chips they eat! Although I also recently saw one devour half a tomato from a cooked breakfast, so perhaps they have a balanced diet!
People are used to meal bundles, fish and chips probably struggle to make money. your food looked good, the fish was thick
Yeah, I guess it is quite energy intensive keeping those fryers hot, everyone has to make a living. The food was tasty, it will be interesting to see if I can compare to similar meals elsewhere.
I think lovation means it was always gonna be exspensive
Yeah, I guess that plays a part, although I got pie, chips and peans in Torquay before Christmas for half the price!
What a nice little placeby the sea, would love to take a walk on the beach, but I think the next beach is around 4 hours by car 😂 If the fish and chips is really good, I would pay a lot 😜 Its a really small piece of fish, thats true 😢 But the sound of the seagulls and the waves is a very nice benefit for lunch time ❤
I grew up close to the coast, although not always lived near it. Don't think I would want to live anywhere too far from the sea though now, even though I am not much of a beachgoer in the summer, gets too busy!
@@GreenoEatsbut isnt it great to know you could go to the beach on every time!? I am a little jealous 😉
Yes, it’s great to live near the coast, that’s for sure!
@@GreenoEats ....I'm from the Fylde Coast , did you know you're never more than 70 miles from the sea wherever you are in the UK.
@@geebee6737 is that all? Wow, I assumed some places in the midlands might be further than that (maybe they just seem like it!)
When they said small ..they really did mean small😚😂 Exactly as described on the tin.BTW can u buy haddock in your part of the world? Its a nicer fish IMO 😊
You can get haddock here, it is a bit more flavoursome than cod for sure. A lot of places starting to carry hake too as a slightly cheaper alternative.
the size of that fish looked like a mini cod rather than a small, out of interest would you ever go back too torquay if so you should visit hanburys and also maybe worth checking out exmouth for fish and chips
It was a toss up between Hanburys and Drakes when I was down there, plumped for Drakes because of their £5 deal! Next time. Also, I was camping close to Exmouth last summer, wanted to get chips from the Proper Fish and Chips place, but little'un insisted on a campsite BBQ instead!!
The question in is, is it cooked in beef dripping?
I can’t help but always compare prices to how much ribeye I can buy 🤷♀️. That’s basically the equivalent to a 400g ribeye from Morrisons. 😊
The answer is no, not cooked in beef dripping. I don’t know of a single chippy anywhere in Dorset (or anywhere down south to be honest) that uses it. I’ll have to make a trip up to Yorkshire sometime to get the real deal.
Interesting comparison that, a 400g ribeye sounds good to me!
@@GreenoEats it’s such a shame as the flavor and taste is undeniably better using beef fat.
I honestly don’t fuss for eating out, and reviews like this remind me why I don’t bother. Chippy chips lost their appeal when they stopped using beef fat. Same as Indian food, they just don’t use ghee or the traditional ways of cooking anymore. Always disappointing.
I don’t mind eating out (clearly!) but whether it’s a cheap place or expensive place I want to feel I have value for the money I spent. Flavour, service and ambiance all important in that regard. If it’s a takeaway then it’s mostly about the taste, which as you say might not be what it was in some cases.
Up in Lancashire we call that extra juice in the mushy peas pea watter and you've got to have your chippy tea with a bit of pea watter pal all looked pretty good that tbh mate looked liked quality instead of quantity which is always good 😀👍
Yeah, the quality was certainly decent! I have heard that juice called Pea Wet before, but that might be a Wigan specific thing maybe?
@@GreenoEats aye you're right buddy they do call it that over wigan way anyhoo about this flat in the late 90's I could have wandered off 😂😂😂🤩
@@jonnytentpeg Luckily I don’t recall whatever incident Tim is referring to, so either I was too under the influence or simply not there. Probably the latter! Did you do New Year in Swanage back in the day then?
@@GreenoEats not just Wigan, anywhere up North I think. Was certainly like that in West Yorkshire when I was a kid (but that’s 50 odd years ago…..). And BTW if you add salt and more importantly some vinegar to the mushy peas that watter will thicken up as well as add a delightful flavour. Golly gosh, there’s memories for you…….
@@surfleetsurfer6370 Back in the day where nothing was wasted. Interestingly some of the tastier things are those which people would probably turn their noses up at nowadays!
Mushy pea's looked very green and Watery😮,
But a part for that looked good, for £10, maybe a bit pricey, but that the way it is today init 🙄
Yep, fish and chips used to be the budget end of the takeaway market in my mind, the go to when you couldn’t stretch to a curry or a Chinese. Now it’s pretty much as expensive. Was tasty though.
Yes it did didn't it,
The Fish Plaice is consistently better than any of the other fish and chip shops in Swanage. Trust me I live there and have tried them all more than a couple of times.
Good to know! Thanks for that inside knowledge 😀Where else is worth eating at in Swanage?
@@GreenoEatsWaffle shake and roll is a takeaway that’s recently combined with beachside burgers, they’re pretty good. If your after a breakfast I’d say Teabreaks and the Crows Nest Inn does a banging roast on a Sunday
Thanks for that, I’ll do a bit of research on them!
Pop to yeovil your be surprised especially on price
Are the chippies cheaper there then? Been a good while since I have eaten anything in Yeovil. Always happy to add any recommendations to the list though!
You'll pay that from a back street chippy int' north wit ya whippet fot company sat on't cobbles.
Look at where you are man and those to die for views , take into account the excessive overheads down South and all of a sudden this becomes great value for money.
Enjoyed the vlog 👍
I certainly appreciate the location 😀 I grew up in Wareham, and at 18 moved away for uni. Took me 20 years for the yearning to move back closer to “home”. Regarding the pricing I guess I am just getting at the point that a few miles inland the same deal is available a couple of quid cheaper. Also that fish and chips seems no longer to be the cheap takeaway option it once was. Thank for watching, glad you enjoyed the video!
Seems good value to me.
It’s going to be interesting for me in coming weeks to compare this to other chippies in the area offering a similar meal but a couple of quid cheaper. I understand food costs are high, but it’s just mind boggling that this is becoming the normal cost of things!
@@GreenoEats Be interesting to see. I wonder if it’s cheaper at West Bay because of the number of outlets or if demand keeps the prices high.
I’ve not had fish and chips in West Bay for some years, but I seem to remember a couple of decent ones down there
Ripped off there. £10 for that? Crazy
Having paid double that at Rick Stein's gaff this week I'm not so sure ha ha!
if you come to south east kent its £12 for fish and chips without mushy peas so think yourseif lucky to pay what you did
It’s about the same for regular fish and chips here, but this is advertised as small fish and chips. I just think that what used to be the cheaper option as a takeaway is now becoming prohibitively expensive. Thanks for watching 😀
Hello Greeno! I know you don’t taste food with your eyes but actually, for a tenner, that looked like a nice fish, chips and peas. If you asked me to choose with my eyes between these and those you’ve just had at “Dick” Stein’s, this one wins hands down any day.
Actually it's an interesting comparison you make there. While the small fish here was certainly small, would I have been happier eating the Rick Stein one at double the price compared to this? Absolutely not. And since I made this video I have been surprised at what you can get from a chippy for under a tenner. Rick Stein was almost 3 times the price of wha I got at Tower Fisheries, and that came with a cuppa !
@@GreenoEats and “Dick” Steins may well have come with the middle finger extended 😂🤣😂
Standard price tbh
Yeah, I guess that's the problem though - a chippy tea used to be the cheaper takeaway to have if you couldn't stretch to an Indian or a Chinese, now it's not that much different in price!
Wheres the curry sauce
I do like a chip shop curry sauce, especially the one that normally gets classed as an Irish one, bit darker, bit more intense.
You know when the fish and chips are very small. The Sea Gulls fly up and down the coat looking for a meal of Substance. The wife and I went to this chipper , over priced tourist trap, not impressed at all.
It was always my go to chip shop in Swanage, but I think Wright on the Beach has knocked it into 2nd place
Bringing your own condiments, that’s cheating.

✌🏻👱🏻♂️✌🏻
Ha ha, I always pick up whatever unused sauce sachets we get, great for camping trips or just a visit to the chippy. Why pay 40p for a sauce pot when McD / BK /KFC have given me it for free 🤣
@@GreenoEats yes, indeed, I get it now! Might start doing the same.
