What Is He Doing With His Trigger Finger?

  • Some people have noticed that I repeatedly press and release the trigger on the rifle when I'm lining up a shot in competition. This video attempts to illustrate where the rifle is pointed and how my finger is positioned when this trigger pulsing takes place.

Thank you for posting. That is what makes shooting fun for me. So many variables that one can never run out of possible way to improve. Or in my case, sometimes even regress hehehe.

I think it's really interesting to see your movement. I honestly expected you to be steadier, but there's no arguing with your scores. You have great discipline to only shoot the good shot within your trace. Did these animations come from a Scatt? It would be very interesting to see your traces from the other stages.

The traces were made using a Noptel which is an electronic trainer similar to a SCATT. If people would like to see my hold I can make some videos in the future showing my wobble area in the different positions.

@@konrad1853 Yes, please make trace videos from the different positions! I think people would find traces very interesting and helpful, especially if you can describe/associate different trace artifacts to shot execution/sight alignment/position errors. I currently shoot a lot of smallbore prone and practice with a Scatt. I've always wondered what the traces of a world cup level shooter look like. Seeing and understanding those traces might help me understand what is achievable and allow some insights wrt getting there. Sadly, there are almost no such traces available to view...
Taking this video (series) idea a step farther, you could show the associated sight alignment that generates each trace. I think there are a lot of shooters who don't know what a 10 looks like from a sight alignment and execution perspective. Seeing a properly scaled graphic could really help people.

I did something like this, in print format, several years ago called "Through the Eyes of Champions". You can find it on my web site at www.sw-hearing.com/konrad/noptel/electronic_trainers.html.

@@konrad1853 That would be fascinating! I'm shooting my first high power match (my first rifle match of any kind in fact) this weekend and found this video looking for techniques to help me out as a neophyte. I had assumed experienced shooters must have techniques to be more steady. Your video makes it appear that it's less about being completely steady, and more about controlling the trigger such that it goes off at just the right moment when you are in the center of the target. VERY interesting!

Have you tried out something called a Blackbeard dry fire kit from Mantis? I've been using it for about a year now, it's a replacement BCG that's motorized and resets your trigger for you. The battery is a magazine replacement. It's nice because you can practice an entire string of fire rather than just individual shots

I have heard of the Mantis system but have no experience with it. All of my dry-firing is done for standing slow-fire so resetting the trigger can be done manually.

Do you put lead weight in the little stock compartment?
I've enjoyed learning about this sport from your videos. It was unfortunate that I was taking it up just as covid shut everything down. Drat.

Yes, there is a lead weight in the buttstock compartment.

Hi, I would appreciate if you could share some info about your shooting glasses.
My wife chuckles "so, you want Mr. Oreo glasses" :)

    • @konrad1853

The glasses are made by Junkers bought from I.S.S. in Ft. Worth. I like to tell people that I make millions from my Oreo sponsorship.

Interesting, thank you. Seems to be a swiss model, which is however widely unkown here in Germany.
I find it interesting, because it seems to offer at least some minimal eye protection, while the newer, more sophisticated, highly modular shooting glasses like MEC, Knobloch or Champion probably won't.
As always, thank you for your advice. I appreciate your channel.

Are you taking up the creep on the trigger?

    • @konrad1853

This is a two-stage trigger. I'm continually taking up the first stage and then releasing. I use this to work my way up to the second stage so I can get ready to center on the target.
