- How do you burn all of your timeouts 8 minutes into the second half? How is that even possible?
In week 8 of the 2002 NFL season, the New York Jets played the Cleveland Browns. After the game, Jets head coach Herm Edwards delivered his iconic "You Play to Win the Game" speech, but during the game? He was coaching like an idiot, and somehow managed to burn all three of his timeouts with seven minutes left in the third quarter. Shocker- it backfired on the team pretty badly

Oh my- herm Edward’s blew it on the field, didn’t he? Should have known better than to burn all the timeouts! This from a coach who said we play to win ! I remember he coached the chiefs after he the jets fired him-and I don’t know if he did the same thing! 😮😮😮😮
Gee. You would think he would learn from other's dumb decisions, not make them. He's the same man who exposed the giants at miracle at the meadowlands.
He only got that TD because of the Giants stupidity at calling a running play instead of falling on the ball (kneel down from victory formation wasn’t in the rules for about another 10 years). Pisarcik falls down and the Giants win.
More modern example would be Mario Cristobal earlier this year and like the Giants, the Hurricanes fumbled an easy win away.

Is Herm Edwards the only coach to be on Dumb Decisions on both JG8 and JG9?
The afc east was wild that year I think all 4 teams had a shot to win it because I think pats jets finished 9-7 but bills n dolphins were 8-8. So it really did comedown to the final day

This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 8/9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about a Dumb Decision (TM) Herm Edwards made as Arizona State coach last year.
I guess the Jets' offense forgot about audibles. Calling one would've saved them a timeout. That challenge flag shouldn't have left Edwards' pocket because Tim Couch clearly completed that pass to Kevin Johnson. That 3rd timeout is on Edwards and defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell because they should've known who to send on the field for their nickel package. No wonder the Jets' offense had to rush its final drive! I don't know how those Jets turned things around due to that kind of coaching, but as a Buccaneers fan, I'm thankful they did as the Jets' thrashing of the Packers at Giants Stadium opened the door for the Bucs to get the NFC's No. 2 seed, which came with a 1st-round bye back then, a few hours later.
As for the field looking like a hot mess, that was the final year that the Jets and Giants played on natural turf because that 3-year experiment was an unmitigated disaster. The NJSEA replaced the grass with FieldTurf, which Giants Stadium had from 2003 through its final season in 2009.

Herm was ALWAYS terrible at clock management. It was his biggest weakness as a head coach and he never got better at it.

The Dumbest game in history, this game here should've This game should've aired on Fox Sports Net Ohio (Browns) and Fox Sports Net New York (Jets) it's grotesque, grotesque, grotesque and grotesque that this game happened in 2002. Same-place-finisher games (games based on last years standings) should only be allowed to air on regional networks such as Bally sports, NBC sports regional networks, AT&T sportsnet. The NFL really needs to get rid of same-place-finisher games altogether or at the very least don't have them be nationally televised but have them be televised by regional networks.

Is there ever a time when a 3rd quarter timeout is good? If you are using a TO in the 3rd quarter, you've screwed up somewhere to consider using it.
Are you using it to avoid a delay of game penalty? Is the 5 yards now more valuable than the 40 seconds later? Are you on the edge of field goal range? If so why didn't you get your kicker out as soon as it was 4th down?
If I'm watching a team I want to win, that team using a timeout in the third quarter is infuriating.
1985 Divisional Pats vs Raiders...Wilson calls time on 1st down with 11 mins left in the 3rd Q. Then Wison runs for no gain. Hawkins runs for 3. On 3rd and 17, Wilson calls time again with 9.5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
Still a better Jets Head Coach than Robert Saleh.
