Back in the mid-late '70's, I had both a D&A Warrior and Phantom at different times (both older grey case, single-band). I had the Warrior first. It was flaky, unstable, and would eat final tubes for lunch. In the year-or-so that I had the Warrior, it flashed a tube and blew the fuse at least 3 times. In every case, I bought a full set of finals and spent several hundred dollars, only to have it do it again. I sold the Warrior and bought a Phantom (I think it was 12-tube 4 driving 8, or it may have been 10-tube 4 driving 6, I don't remember), and it worked perfectly. Rock solid and super clean (as long as I didn't drive it with more than about 3.5 to 4 watts). I loved that Phantom and wish I had never sold it. What a great piece of iron! Those were the days!
Had a 500 in the steel gray case yrs ago I use a d201a tram and a mini scout pushing it Got just over 1000 watts out of it Talk on that setup for close to 15 yrs They are tough as nails
In the 1970s I can remember seeing lots of ads for mail in electronic courses in magazines. One of the schools mentioned the owner of D&A was a student and showed one of the amplifiers.
I like the D&A phantom , their nostalgic and have their fan club , I prefer the silver gray ones better older models I believe , but it's sad that one 4cx250b steel tube will do 1000 watts and that's what came in the pride dx 300 amplifier
in the 70's I had a silver triple stage that would easily key 700...I had it hooked to a Pace 1000 B sidetalk....with a Turner sidekick mic. and Wilson Laser...I could talk to one or two folks
correct me if i am wrong.... but i thought you are suposed to have to 250W switch turned on? as well as the Power on switch. The 250w switch is the 4 driver tubes???? With the 250w switch off i thought it would just be running the 6 driver tubes???
Stock mine easily produced 750w pep behind my Cobra 1000GTL. Stupid design, 4 driving 6. Redesigned/rewired mine to 2 driving 8. 175w carrier swings to 980w PeP - Bird 43P, two 2500w slugs agree, 980/ 992. SWR = 1.15:1 at full power ( UNDER 1.2:1 )
Avoid sweep tube amps. Get an amp like an Ameritron that uses real transmitting tubes, not 40 year old tubes made for TV sets. They are way overpriced, and give very little output for the insane prices you pay for them these days. Plus, you're buying tubes that have sat for decades and you have no clue if they are good or not. They haven't been made in over 30 years. An AL82 with a pair of 3-500Z's will smoke this thing all day every day.
@@miguelsalami I use a bird meter with peak kit and with a 148 cobra and GOOD tubes, the amplifiers will happily do 650+watts peak with 15 peak going in. Whack them with double that and youll get over 1000 peak on the bird peak meter aswell.
cb junk lol had a 2 stage and it was always burning the tubes up and was in the shop get ham amps there rugged at least youll stay on the air longer lol.

I had a friend who had a grey box 500. He got out really good on a little quad beam or clr ground plain.

The low switch runs the 4 driver tubes & the high setting runs all 10 tubes.

i have seen them do 1000+ with stronger radios, like 30 watts.

I have 5 Phantoms do not have one that will not do 900 watts or more peak.
His is being measured on a bird watt meter they will show accurate output power on ems & peak settings. Unlike Dosey & other brand generous meters.
