I'm in London and I can barely get £400 a day and I've been in the industry for 10 years, having moved here from New Zealand two years ago. The lack of decent rates here have just made me feel depressed about the industry, and made me feel devalued and degraded. My dayrate frequently changes based on what the production has already budgeted, and how much money I have in my bank account, which is usually not a lot. It's been incredibly hard to get work here since I got here, and as you know, that results in a further lack of work down the line. I desperately miss doing the job I love so much, so it's great to see you making it in a big city, and at rates that respect you as a documentary filmmaker.
Great vid. Expanding on the "rainy day fund", I would say paying into an RRSP should be a part of everyone's budget too. Actually, don't make it part of the budget, make it automatically deducted from your account (no matter how small the amount) and completely forget about it. Make it uninterrupted and you won't question if you can afford it. I'd argue its more important than any other subscription. You're paying yourself, saving for later, reducing your taxable income and saving for a house all at the same time. Do it now and thank yourself later! Josh's next video, "The power of compound interest and dollar cost averaging!"
Thanks Brian, it’s not an exciting part of the job… but as I’m now trying to buy a house it’s my accountability video 😂 and a topic that needs more love for sure!
Hey Josh just found the channel. Thank you! I just decided to take the leap into full time freelance work and I’m trying to soak up all the knowledge of the business side I can.
Awesome video! Thanks for being transparent and sharing all this information! Would love to see more videos about finding clients as a freelancer and your journey when you were starting out!
Thats 100% on the list of videos I'll be making but if you want to know the quick and dirty now... finding/ building/ joining creator communities as well as tapping into your communities outside of filmmaking are great ways of finding work.
