THANK YOU FOR THIS! As a novice player reading riichi book 1 and just learning tile efficiency, this is really helpful. would love to see more

9:08 In most cases, sanmenchan is instant riichi for me. Aside from obvious advantages, this type of wait usually comes with a better chance for ura-dora, because of many different tiles in hand.
As for double wind, I usually look if my hand needs yakuhai to become something. Bad hand usually does need something. With yakuhai I can at least call for a quick 1000 hand, if I want. Another yaku may give a reason to keep it too: honitsu, chanta, chiitoitsu or maybe even honroutou.
I'm slowly making progress in Master 1. In 3-player mode I even reached 2300/2800. In 4-player mode I have fewer games, but average gain seems good enough.
Honestly, it's an achievement to even survive in Jade. The way ranking system works, anyone below average will be deranked sooner or later. So, basically 50% of Jade room players are stuck between Expert 3 and Master 1.

80% of the time I throw double Tong first, to prevent the dealer from pairing up the Tong so he won't get to pon. So when should you not throw double Tong first? (admittedly I sometimes do it when I'm not supposed to).
If your hand is bad and you discard double Tong, wherever the dealer is sitting, the moment the dealer pons his hand value is automatically inflated. So if your hand is bad/mediocre, discarding it early is not exactly a very good idea. Once the dealer pons the double Tong and you are not anywhere near winning, it becomes very difficult for you to push tiles.
It has to be balanced between not letting the dealer to pon at all (if your hand is bad and there is a chance you are going to defend all the way, then you might want to consider holding the Tong all the way), or discarding early (because your hand is good and even if the dealer pons the double Tong you want to push all the way), and discarding in the middle (only after your hand is slightly more ready to fight against the dealer).
E.g. if your hand is 13m 44589p 2467s Tong Xia Haku. If you discard the Tong and the dealer pons, now your Haku is hard to discard, because if the dealer pons the Haku there is almost no way you can fight with this hand. If you bail you will lose 1000/1500 due to noten and if the dealer tsumos you will lose at least 2000 points.
E.g. if your hand is 23m 45789p 2367s Tong Xia Haku. Then I would discard double Tong first because my hand is good. Even if the dealer pons the double Tong first I am ready to fight against him.

    Well I know your feel.
Since 4 pin was 1 in left discard and you have some pair of them logically you will throw that, cause it just 1 remaining of them so little chance to Ron since another tiles near them already been discard by others player
But that could also be feint.
The reason I'm believe 6 man was safe cause it was face with master rank.
So gotta expect some hell wait people.
Well if I was you still keep The 6 man.
For at least Im was roned but not in somebody hell wait if he wait 4pin.
(Cause this case often happened in my real life mahjong)
    Anyways GG
Mahjong really makes you study another people personality ain't ya.

5:37 for the suji trap part, say you do not have any guaranteed safe tiles, how would you play around the possibility of suji trap?

    • @Xanxust1
      @Xanxust1  Рік тому +3

There are different danger levels for each type of suji trap:
-Suji trap is statistically less likely to occur on tiles discarded after riichi
-Suji trap 19 tiles are less dangerous (e.g. throw 6m to suji trap 9m) because it can only wait for shanpon or tanki waits. Whereas other suji traps (e.g. throw 5m to trap 8m) are more dangerous because it can be tanki 8m, shanpon 8m or kanchan 79m
-Suji trap is far more likely on the tile discarded on the riichi turn. This is because it is highly likely for someone's hand to have for e.g. 135p. He will throw the 5p and riichi to trap the 2p.
-Suji becomes safer against riichi declared with honor tiles. This is because honors are commonly kept as safe tiles. Keeping safe tiles is more likely to be done with hands full of good shapes, increasing the likelihood of a ryanmen wait.
-If the dora is the suji I will still almost never throw it unless I am pushing a big hand.
Also depends on the board state. For example, he discards 5m 1 turn before the riichi. If you see 3x 1m, 2x 2m and 3x 3m discarded it becomes more unlikely that he has the last 13m or is waiting on tanki 2m.
Other than suji, there are other techniques (e.g. one chance, deducing safety level of tiles from discard order, sotogawa of tiles discarded before riichi) that can be used for defense.

@16:42, you said you riichi'd so you can catch first. But isn't pinfu dora + riichi stick enough to overtake 1st?

You're right, I forgot to count the riichi stick cuz the sword looked like decoration XD (edited the subtitle)
Making a lot of mistakes in post commentary too, lols. Thanks for pointing it out
