Many fond ( -also childhood- ) memories of several Channel ferry crossings through the years! Thanks, Thames TV, for stirring up just a bit of nostalgia by this post! 🇧🇪
Long gone, some sold to Asia but what was cheap, efficient and swift was chucked out the window. My ex wife's uncle and grandfather were both involved with the hovercraft projects with her uncle working with the folks on the IoW side and her grandfather a longtime engineer who worked with developing guidance systems for craft himself being part of the rocketry team at the old Christchurch secret base. Back in their heyday, half an hour port to port with car or on foot and the ferry companies were continually trying to destroy the hovercraft, even British Rail were dead against 'em.
Yes there were lots of other makes of cars. You had the choice of Peugeot, BMW, Renault, Mercedes, Datsun, etc. But people chose cars from their own country, e.g. most cars in Britain were Fords then Vauxhalls, most in France were Renaults then Peugeots, etc.
Judith Chalmers demonstrating impeccable received pronunciation, something rarely heard in broadcasting today.

Why am I watching this?
I clicked a few 80s electro/synth vids, and got recommended this. You probably got it for the same reason.
At least Sea Link shut their doors
They too left doors open.
I was a helmsman on the strait, I used to see ships from all fleets sailing in this manner.
Very disrespectful
So in that era, you a choice of Cortina or a Cavalier to get on boat, to have a cheap crossing. Not other makes of cars, to a cheap crossing.
