My first foreign holiday was also aged 9 in Ibiza in 1974. About the time this was filmed. It seemed so exotic. I’ll never forget the heat and humidity stepping of the plane. Something not experienced in England.
We stayed at the Magaluf Park hotel in August 1978. It cost £156 for 11 nights full board with flights and transfer included. We had waiters serving our meals no buffet style it was much better. We had waiters who took drink orders round the pool so we didn't have to move if we didn't want to. We would tell the staff we wouldn't be in for lunch and they insisted on giving us packed lunches which we didn't really need. There was entertainment at the hotel for those who didn't want to go to the pubs and night clubs. We went out only young then though. This was in the good old days before we were charged and ripped off for every little thing.
I went to Palma Nova in March 1975. We stayed in a huge hotel. It rained solidly for three days and the roads were not finished yet so there was no drainage and our feet got covered in mud. The only Spanish people we met worked in the hotel. All the shopkeepers were English.
I went to Magaluf, most years from 1972 - 1979 .. Im 59 now ( 2023 ) Great times, I stayed Hotels Trinidad / Guadalupe / Antillas / Barbados ... Wonder what happened to the 'New' shopping Centre 'Soliveras' ?/ Cant see nothing on Interweb about it ( I remember it being built, then a few years later visited it c1975 ! )
I did visit Palma four years ago on a cruise stop the first time I had been back to the island since 1975. Loved it - will have a weekend there as soon as I can travel again.
A cross section of average citizens from the UK back in 1974 , well spoken articulate ....fast forward to Covid 19 Uk what have we become as a nation ?
Self-selection bias. The people chosen aren’t representative of the British population, merely representative of the kind of people that were selected to appear in the piece by the director.
I first went to Magaluf in 1980 - been back there numerous times and to next door Palma Nova. There's a middle class snobbishness here redolent of the time. Earlier it was for places like Torremolinos then Monty Python did a sketch that re-affirmed that prejudice and travel shows moved on. Same with Benidorm. These places are sunny, fun and make people happy - lets not sneer eh?
i live in spain for last 8 years and the roads are still nail biting experiences. stray dogs on the loose, racing drivers and drunk ex pats. but on the whole the spanish are obviously very skilled at driving as despite the reckless nature they never ever seem to have accidents. daily near misses but rarely accidents. they must have bull fighter type quick reactions or perhaps liquid cognitive brains. but i have to say,, i prefer going slowly.
Was here with mum in 1972 at El Caribe. It was lovely then, hardly any buildings. The next time we went it was 1974 and not as nice and by 1978 it was really built up,
Those buildings overlooking the beach look so ugly. What a horrible sight, ruining the beauty of the surroundings. I would never want to holiday in such a place. I bet it looked beautiful before those apartment units and hotels were built.
Something fundamental has changed since 1974 and I don't just mean prices. A vox pop of Brits on hols on the Spanish costa in 2020 would sound nothing like this. The interviewees almost sound like they lost their way off the set of Downton Abbey - the first one has the strangest accent.
It was almost half a century ago, so it would be odd if something hadn't changed? You sound a bit shocked that the world has changed in half a century?
@@zeddeka You're right of course. I was 16 in 1974 but change comes in increments so small that it's almost imperceptible. That is until you watch something as innocuous as this that you're made to realise just how much it's changed. It's.not only the crazily well spoken holiday makers that jump out it's the presenters style .... a hote resort is reviewed like something from an early Top Gear ..... and the complete absence of background music ...
Went there in 1980 and then 81, 82 & 83 - had a ball every time !. No groups of morons fighting, being sick etc, etc - just all like-minded decent young people solely out for fun !

This IS Franco Spain - the Caudillo died in office the year after this programme, and tourism in Spain was Franco’s baby. Franco left concrete monstrosities all over the country. Many rural communities were forced out of their homes and relocated in prefabricated towns like L’Altet to service Franco’s tourist industry. You didn’t argue with Franco, and his authoritarianism was so pervasive that it stymied economic growth. He HAD to open up Spain because he’d frightened the entrepreneurial instinct out of his citizens. Franco’s social experiment shows what would have happened to Nazi Germany if it had won the war. It would’ve collapsed in the 1950s.
Brings back happy memories I was in Majorca in 1982 aged 9 my first holiday abroad

Wow! I wish prices were like that today in 2024 would make such a nice holiday at those prices lol

Can say that about most places what a ridiculous comment .. take the pyramids and sand away from Egypt and it’s Newcastle 🤦♂️
@blackngold007 no booze in Egypt so can't compare with Newcastle.

The Brits being interview were well spoken. Was it the place for the upper middle classes in the 1970’s, or has our quality of speech declined?
I was about to make exactly the same comment
Quality declined in all aspects really.
I was just saying the same re this VT, the accents and pronunciation was much clearer.. innit
The foreigners have down graded Queens English, Channel 4 to blame bro, get weh it dude
