    • @RonHenry

      Erik I do occasionally. Most times I don't though. I mow frequently enough that the clippings that come off the grass are very small so they break down quickly. It's free fertilizer for the lawn. If you're mowing once every 2 weeks then perhaps catching the clippings is a better idea since they'll create quite a mess on the lawn.

    • @erk-1
      @erk-1 4 роки тому +1

      @@RonHenry I spoke to our local gardening supply store and I was told that back east it's OK to leave the trimmings but not here in CA because of the type of heat we get. They don't recommend leaving the trimmings because it will just stay on top and not do the lawn any good to where in your area it can be used as fertilizer FYI...

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 роки тому +1

      @@erk-1I suppose it depends on the grass type and mowing frequency. If you're mowing frequently as in twice per week then the clippings should break down pretty quickly regardless of grass or heat type. At any rate, collecting your clippings will result in a cleaner appearance initially. When prepping for company on the 4th of July I collected clippings for the last mow. In practice though it doesn't really matter in my case because the clippings break down so quickly.

      I sure do. I first aerated in early April. Typically I only do it once per season, but I might give the lawn one more aerating pass in June when it's growing quickly. I like to do it in early spring since it breaks up the surface and allows the fertilizer to penetrate a bit better early in the season. Ron, I've owned many brands of reel mowers including tri plex's and the only one I still own and use is my 20 plus year old Locke, they used to be made in Grayson, Ga. The owner even tried mounting them on a Walker mower but had some problems and gave up with it. My turf that I have now is emerald green zoysia and it is a different animal compared with bermuda, I prefer bermuda turf over emerald. Regarding the tru cut, only thing I hated about mine was the way you had to push the rod to get it moving with your thumb, they should use handles that you squeeze like my Locke, I tried a newer Locke and HATED it with all the garbage they had on it with the added kill switches etc . Lawn looks great, keep up the good work.

      Thanks so much sharing your experience with mowers David. I'm looking very strongly at a Toro Greensmaster to add to the stables. I want to see how much better of a cut I'll get out of higher end mower that uses the drum roller to propel the mower instead the drive wheels. I imagine it should stripe better and by much less likely to put ruts in the lawn from the drive wheels like I get with the Tru-Cut sometimes.

    • @RonHenry

      Heya Concerned Patient. Having used both, I would say you get bet cut with the grooved roller vs solid roller. The way the grass is presented to the bed knife results in a more even cut. Think of it as using a comb on your hair vs. flat stick. The comb creates a more uniform hair pattern. Hope this helps. 😎👍

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 роки тому +1

      Been getting tons for rain. If your lawn is looking hazy, you're probably cutting a bit too much off. Remember that ideally you don't want to remove more than the upper 1/3rd of the grass or you'll get into the stalk which will result in a yellowish/brown color. Ideally mow more often or mow just a tad higher.😎

    • @RonHenry

      For Bermuda, you really don't want it any taller than 2 inches. It likes being maintained at shorter heights of cut.

    • @RonHenry

    Another fantastic video. I re-watched this to validate my decision to buy a Tru-Cut vs, what I have and McLane reel mower. During the peak of Texas heat I installed a Tifway 419 hybrid bermuda on about 2,000 sq. ft. of our nearly 4.5 acres of lawn. Because of the season the Tifway was delivered at about 3.5". After 2 weeks of diligent care of watering and light feeding I felt comfortable enough to mow with the rotary mower down to about 1.5". A couple of weeks later I set the Jorgensen PM22 greens mower to the highest setting and got great results. However, the Jorgensen just wore my old body out because it's speed if 100% which is not good for a tight area with lots of turns. This video convinced me to purchase the Tru-Cut 25" commercial with the roller bar. It does great! I now have a golf course area right out our back door cut to about 3/8" thanks to the Tru-Cut. Next I'll start to level and top dress slowly based on your other video. Hopefully, this will address the areas that have seems from the turf installation. Thanks!

      @leestennes9234 4 роки тому

      Randy Man I’ve researched those and heard great things. It’s just a cost thing. Having the compost mixed is healthier for the lawn instead of just sand but it doesn’t level quite as well because the organic material breaks down over time so you’ll have to relevel more often. It’s $185 for 1 cubic yard compared to sand which is $30-60 a yard. I’m going to need 8 yards so the cost difference is pretty significant. I have a small front yard, it’s about 500 sq ft. It would be cool to get one bag and just use it on the front to compare how it performs vs. just sand.

    I have a 7 blade califonia trimmer with front roller. It's made an enormous difference in my lawn. I also had the yard top dressed 2 times. I cut once a week. Thanks for your advice, you're a good man.

      Sounds great Tony! Glad that you're having great results with the Cali trimmer. Any reel mower is a good mower. The most important thing is consistent mowing which you're doing. That's why you're getting such good results. Let me know if I can help with anything. 👍😎

    Where did you get that shirt , or where can I purchase it ? I also own a tru cut 25” , with the slope in my yard I don’t think a Toro or a John Deer would work. I need those wheel to pull up my slopes . I switch from a toro push mower with a stripper kit to a tru cut this year with a front roller . Just the reaction of people when they see the mower when I’m cutting, and the question they ask are priceless. Don’t forget , where can I purchase that reel mower shirt ?

    Just came to your channel yesterday. I subscribed today. I started working my lawn hard during quarantine after years of neglect. I bought a Fiskars manual reel mower, but I'm sure I'll outgrow that soon. I'm in North Gwinnett area so not too far from you. Where would you recommend that I start looking for a next step reel mower given that it'll be next year before I really "need' it and I have time to be patient?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks so much for subscribing JR. As far as a manual reel mower goes, the Fiskars are very nice. As far as a powered reel mower goes, Tru Cuts are great options. I've had mine for over 3 years now and love it. Other options are a Toro Greensmaster or one of the offerings from JD. They're a bit higher end with the price to boot. As far as where to get one if you're going brand new, the Keystone Rental in Duluth GA is a great option. (770) 476-2999 Pat and Dan run a great team and can both sell you the mower and service it when needed. They're probably not far with you being in North Gwinnett.
      In the pre-owned market, you can look on Craigslist or Facebook market place. A pre-owned Tru-cut in good shape will set you back between 650 - 1000. Brand new, they go for between $2100 - $2500 depending on options. Once you really get into your lawn, you're eventually going to want a powered reel mower. It's a pretty big step up in the quality of cut that you get. Be sure to let me know if I can help with anything. 😎👍

    The best striping lines ive ever seen on a Bermuda lawn was by a John Deere greens mower.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 роки тому +1

      I keep hearing that the John Deer or Toros stripe really well. Eventually I just may have to look into one. I wonder how well they hold up in comparison to a Tru Cut

    • @indigoridge
      @indigoridge 4 роки тому

      Ron Henry as a former Trucut owner I’d have to admit that the Toro will definitely stripe better. I am using a Swardman now and again, the stripes really pop with my Swardman. I could never get really defined crisp stripe wit my old TruCut. Even after I added the front roller. The rear drum roller makes the difference.

    I think once or twice a week is adequate prior to growing season then more frequently when it warms up. Curious.....why don't you gather your clippings? Also what height are you mowing at? I thought I saw you adjust the clipper height at the start of the mow

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 роки тому +3

      Yep. I did adjust the height of mow prior to cutting. I'm mowing at .35 - .45". So just under half an inch. As temps get higher, I'll probably take it up to .5 - .75. The lawn stripes better at those heights. Right now I'm mowing lower to force lateral growth as much as possible.
      What height of cut are you mowing at? Check out my video from this morning at the 5 minute, 55 second spot. ua-cam.com/video/FQawcShIcss/v-deo.html You can see exactly how tall the grass is.
      I don’t bag the clippings mainly because I don’t generate a ton of them due to mowing frequency. Plus that’s free fertilizer I’d be throwing away. They break down very quickly.

      @RonHenry  4 роки тому +1

      Very nice. With temps being relatively low, do you have a lot of clippings with a 3-day mowing schedule?

    • @bermudachris930
      @bermudachris930 4 роки тому +1

      Ron Henry not too much. Trying to keep it under 3/4” this is year so if it needs it or not I’m sticking to the 2-3 day between cuts

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 роки тому +1

      At 2 - 3 day between cuts, you really shouldn't have too many clippings to deal with. For me it's free fertilizer. As long as you're mowing every few days consistently, they shouldn't make the lawn look bad.

      Ron Henry twice a week if the weather allows it. Have been trying to keep it lower than previous owners so I’m trying to mow more consistently
