Let’s normalize being honest about our feelings towards our hair. When you said “this is the most feminine I’ve felt with my hair” sis it’s a reason why it’s not just hair. Our hair holds so much energy that is undeniable. I feel the same way when my hair is stretched and my actual length is more visible. It gives such a boost in confidence that’s not there when our hair is in a protective state. You look beautiful and your hair looks amazing.

Water is a double edged sword for us with textured hair. What i found works for me is washing, blow drying, then twisting the hair dry and then i add the moisture afterwards and layer it with shea butter. This reduces disorganized shrinkage and works wonders. I also retwist every 2 weeks coz nobody has time to deal with the matting associated with twists. P.S. Your hair looks amazing..definitely worth the struggle..😊

I don't keep my Twists for more than 2 and half to 3 weeks because in that time I don't add any product to the hair. The locking and matting is something else if i add water or any watwr based product. I take them down Wash and treat and have then reinstalled. If I dare to wash my hair in the Twists I have to take them down individually and retwist

My challenge is to have this look for the month. The more feminine loose and flowing hair. My hubby gets excited when I have hair loose.🤭🤷 It's because I always have my hair wrapped or protective styles. 🥴Thanks for all the much needed information.

Well girl, the proof is in the pudding. Your hair looks amazing!! 😃👏🌺💕 Well done! It seems to me that you grew the majority of your length wearing your hair in twists, and they look great on you! You mastered washing, moisturizing and retwisting in increments. You figured out how to tame your edges without over manipulating them. Seems like you had a perfect routine. Nevertheless, you trying different things is benefiting us watching and learning, and it’s not causing any harm to your hair goals, which is amazing! You’re going down as the greatest, kinky haired natural hair UA-camr of all time girl!! Thanks for all you do. And…my hair gradually thins in density on the sides of my head as well. Tenderheadedness after detangling sessions? Oh, yes! This happens even with finger detangling. I think pain when handling hair is so normalised in our community that a painless haircare routine is unimaginable. It is for me, at least. I honestly can't recall a time when I styled my hair with no pain at all during the process. Weird. I guess some discomfort when caring for afro hair is inevitable? Interesting to think about. Can't wait until you tackle this topic. You have, by far, the most thought-provoking videos when it comes to our afro hair. I enjoy them so much! Thank you.

I agree but for some reason I can moisturise with water and not drench my hair with water. But what I have found is the best is to just take it all down after 2/3weeks and reinstall. Cause just retwisting after washing took me 7 hours while reinstalling takes max 4 hours. The math told me what to do

  • @klaudiacaroline2574

Yes adding water will make detangling during takedown very difficult. That is why I do not wash my hair at all for the 3 to 4 weeks. I use braid spray if I have added hair and mousse to keep hair moisturized. For the edges mousse is good if you want to lay hair, there is less friction during application and you get to keep the edges afterwards. There was a time I tried cowashing the hair while in 2 strand twists, and I had better results.
    Your hair looks absolutely amazing!!

I’m trying microbraids (w/ my own hair) right now. I’ve been washing weekly and spraying w/ glycerin aloe mix. When you asked for our pov on how to avoid tangling during takedown, I took out one of my braids to see if it was tangled and noticed it wasn’t. Sooooo I think smaller braids may help reduce tangles. Let’s see.😅

You're so beautiful, so is your hair. Had told myself I wouldnt use synthetic braids this year BUT hai! Converted my twists to medium mini braids and installed box braids over them. My plan was to remove the box braids after 4 weeks, wash the mini braids and reinstall the box braids. After watching this, Im a little torn as to what to do, I think I'll remove the box braids, wash the mini braids, re do them again and put back the box braids. Hope that helps with detangling ad breakage. Please dont hide tha beautiful hair in a weave

Your hair looks magnificent!!🥰💜 Personally, I think you look great with your hair up and with the wraps. I too enjoy the look of my hair when it is out. I think that is another reason I enjoy a WnG. Braids are a wonderful choice, but I really need something that is easy to take down so when I do any kind of protective style it is a twisted updo or loose braid updo. I enjoy the elegance of updos. It can't be something long-term, because of how frequently I have to shampoo. I get a lot of ideas for styling twists from Mrs Charity Umar, and styling updos and loosely braided hair from the Long Hair Community. The LHC is mostly a non-black forum but it is a forum for ladies with long to ultra long hair, and the updos are beautiful and many of them can be done with long natural hair.
Being tender headed is another reason I don't do long term protective styling. Any style that's going to have me in tears is not a style that I'm going to do.

You look beautiful and your hair is gorgeous. When I take down my braids, I use a lightweight oil. When I tried water, so much hair would come out. Then I remembered when your hair is wet it is in its weakest state. Me having fine hair, it's better for me to use oil. Your scalp is tender because you hadn't combed your hair for months and when you are combing your hair you are putting your scalp under stress. I watch a hairdresser and he says the key to growing hair is not to let it dry out and oil your ends regularly. I have been doing this and my has been growing beautifully.
I am seeing a lot of women going back to long term protective styling, I don't know if, in the long run, hair and scalp issues will arise in the future. I've seen a lot of women from my generation who used a lot of tight extensions and weaves are now balding. I can remember when I was a child women had their hair out and they didn't have any balding and their edges were intact.
Please be careful with this long term protective styling is it really necessary?

I’m currently carrying this style u took down. What a coincidence..lol. I have been pouring water on my hair but not everyday tho. Like three times in a week and to my greatest surprise my hair doesn’t shrink. Instead it stretches. I also noticed the same when I did the protective style challenge. I carried my cornrows for two months.
My hair works well with water, and I wet my hair before I take down my braids, allow it air dry a little bit leaving my hair damp. These previous protective style I did, I didn’t use water and my hair broke. It was so dry, I couldn’t detangle it properly cos my hair kept cutting but I’m happy my hair still grew

Your hair looks so pretty and shiny! It does feel nice to wear the length every so often. 😊
I wonder if you couldn't just treat your hair (in braids) the way straight naturals do? There are many of them who only wash monthly, and you know they are staying fastidiously away from water for all that time and they still keep their hair soft, moisturised, bouncing, and flowing.
Something else that may help - have you considered wearing the braids for only a month, then taking them out and wearing as a braidout for a week or two? You'd have less tangling and would still get 5-6 weeks out of the style, and I know a few people personally who have great success with this method.
Your scalp may have also been tender because you hadn't manipulated your hair in a while. Combing and braiding and detangling on a regular basis can help to stimulate the arrector pili muscle, and just like any other muscle, if not used regularly it can get weaker. I know ppl with locs say their head becomes very tender after they comb out their locs, and people who wear the same part all the time struggle with tenderness just from flipping their part! Maybe some good scalp massages on the days leading up to take down would help alleviate this?
Yay to hear that your edges recovered!! 🎉 I think most people's edges would be far longer and thicker if there were less manipulation.

You ate this look up..Girrrllll! What causes more tangles and matting is the washing while the hair is still in the long term protective style. In my opinion, and from my experience, just stick to your remoisturising routine and leave out washing until the end of the protective style..when you take down.. detangle then wash.

    OMG! Your hair looks amazing!
I also noticed that about adding greater whilst in a protective style. It lasts less if I add water, i.e., 3 weeks, with possible tangling. When I tried not adding anything, after 6 weeks, the takedown was a breeze. It was pretty dry though, probably because I used synthetic kinky braids. I’m going to try using less water based products after I take these down and we’ll see how it goes
Thanks for the awesome video as usual😊

I recently did a long term protective style which is why I haven't uploaded a video in over a month. I did smaller braids than normal. I just finished taking my hair down and it took 3 days🫣🤦🏾‍♀️ my scalp is so sore and tender. I believe shampooing while in braids was the culprit of tangling...I'll never do this again.

I do not shampoo my hair in a protective style. I spritz my hair with fenugreek water,n apply aloe vera gel, then apply a small amount of Sheabutter.
I am currently on a 4 month long term protective journey.. I hear you about the not feeling attractive wearing cornrows, single braids for a long term protective style look.

I am intrigued by the fenugreek water, how do you mask the smell please? I tried fenugreek in a hot oil treatment but the smell of it all, just couldn’t get past it 😂

    • @valeriesignaturesalon
      @valeriesignaturesalon 4 місяці тому +1

@@aaliyaha there is no smell because aloe vera is a cleanser to the hair n scalp. I apply my strained aloe vera gel n fenugreek water to my scalp every 3 days

i agree. water is a weird one. What i started doing after taking out a protective style was spraying aloe water like once a week or every other week. Sometimes ill add a leave in but this gives me an excuse to actually touch my hair to see if she like it. Just trying not to ignore my hair in this 90 degree weather.

    Great lessons.
I recently had my hair in braids, no weave for 5 weeks. I washed and deep conditioned weekly.
When I finally released my hair I was miserable with all the detangling. I used leave in conditioner and oil to help with the matted hair.
Now I’m back to weekly washing and redoing the braids. I wear wigs throughout the week if I’m heading outside. I find my wash days go soooo smooth and are much faster when I keep to that schedule.
Your hair looks so good. I’m excited for my hair to get that long. How did you stretch it? Just braids alone? Or do you have a revair or regular blow dryer?

The natural hair UA-camr Eugenia Kelcy uses deep conditioner only to soften the hair on the braid she is unraveling. Not the whole head at once but one braid at a time. Try that next time instead of using water. She has 4C hair with slightly tighter coils than yours, and it is down to her tailbone.🤗
