All religions have been about ridding the ego. Bowing to Allah, kneeling to christ, prostrating to a diety.
When a person falls at someone's feet it is an exercise of reducing ones ego by holding the teacher higher. The teacher is someone who has rid himself of the ego and this gesture is of no importance to him, this is a test to the teacher as well.
However this became immensely bastardised to a custom filled with ego calibration.
There are no real teachers now. However it is of no harm to bow down and touch the feet of people who have done honest selfless service. Not by custom, but on our own.
