When Soviets attacked Finland (WW2), Finnish Defence Forces played this song constantly on frequencies that the Soviet army used for communication. This is what this song is most famous of.

Cool fact but I think this is most famous as a Nokia phone ringtone.

Yes, Russians had left radio mines in various bridges. This song was used to block the signals to trigger those mines.

It wasn't just for communication but as a weapon. Those frequencies where used by Russians to detonate radio mines and Finns literally prevented them from using the frequances by sending out constant interference broadcast from 4.9.1941 to 2.2.1942. The most important interference happened in the beginning of that time when they played Säkkijärven Polkka over and over again 1500 times for three days. That saved a big part of Viipuri at that time, although it was of course lost later.

Säkkijärvi was Finnish village that was lost to Russia/soviet union occupation. Why the song is famous tho is because during continuation wa,r when Finnish army retook capital of Karelia Viipuri in 1941, the soviet red army left the city mined with radio mines that were triggered by broad casting three-note chord on frequency the mines radio was set on. After some time combat engineers figured out this and to prevent the triggering of the mines they started to by playing this song Säkkijärven polkka over the radio frequencies to prevent radios on the mines to recieve the trigger signal. This succesfully prevented most of the mines being triggered and exploding before engineers could go through the city and find all the mines or front lines push far enough that soviets couldn't trigger the mines anymore.

I've loved this song ever since I heard it for the first time in 2011. At that time, I was in my second year of high school and it was used as one of our dances for the Wanhojen tanssit. (Ye Olde Prom roughly translated)
It was so much fun and for that the song has a special place in my heart 😁❤️👍

This is such an amazing song that Finn's still listen to and love. Not only that, but is danced to as polkka all over Finland at lavatanssit (folk music events with dancing). Checking out some videos about Finnish *lavatanssi* culture might be interesting thing for you to check out, they are super integral to Finnish culture even today
ps. Never ever think you'll bore Finns if you are diving deeper into details, especially about Finnish culture. We have very long attention span and love people who put t in real effort and heart into anything

When you were wondering about a similar song that you had heard I would assume it's Ievan polkka sang by Vocaloid Hatsume Miku. Ievan polkka originates from finland also and you can fin Loituma sing it on youtube.

This version is fine, but the definite version is the purely instrumental one by Viljo Vesterinen and the Dallepé Orchestra in 1939. The very one that was used to jam those radio mines in the Continuation War.

If you are interested in Finnish humor music, I would recommend "Bat & Ryyd" songs which are basically humorous cover songs by this band that parodies the whole Batman and Robin superhero comics schtick by being a pair of basically alcoholic hobos who get drunk, go to local bars to pickup "bar flies" (ugly women), and get into fights with other patrons. It was very much a 90's thing when techno music became a big deal and comedy found its way to this music genre as well. "Ehtaa tavaraa" (the real stuff) is one of their songs, another one is "Lentävä puliukko" (flying hobo), which is a parody of one the Finnish folk songs.

Yes, Finnish can be hard but not insurmountable. In the the US goverment ranking for foreign workers, the laguage gets a value of 3/4, "languages with significant linguistic and/or cultural differences from English". However it is a different thing to be understood in and understand spoken language, and getting towars the native speaker fluency (which an US three three letter acronym agency would like to achieve).

Finnish can sound weird to a englishman as finnish is actually a part of an entirely different language group. I can only imagine how weird this language can seem to someone who does not speak any of it's related languages.
