The first song was famous because during WW2 it was used to jam the radiotraffic of russians. The second is dedicated to those heroes and veterans who fought on WW2. - And it is common to sing it in veteran funerals. In the video you can see our map before WW2. - Well.. our Independence day is soon so could you please listen to Jean Sibelius: Finlandia Hymn (if I could choose it would be our national anthem just because no other country would have the same theme ( like now f.e. Estonia got the same theme and if I remember right some african country also got this theme composed Fredrik Pacius.) Our official anthem is called Maamme (Our land). AND I would love to see you reacting to a book called Finnish Nightmeres or 101 Very Finnish Problems (I assume you got library there in Sodankylä..)

Säkkijärven polkka isn't famous song just because some Finnish soldiers played it. It was already famous back then and it is popular because of entirely other reasons. Finnish soldiers using the song to jam Russian radiotraffic isn't well known information at all.

We are about 10 days away from Finnish Independence Day. No fireworks. Two candles in the window, and a very formal event at the presidential palace. Also the singing of Finlandia, the national anthem. The English translations I've seen don't do it justice. Among other things the freedom from slavery is mentioned.

Considering when the lyrics were written, and the war of independence just fought, and the conditions under which Finns had been before independence, then it was a form of slavery usually referred to as surf/surfdom. Many terms and expressions change with time. You are correct that Finn's were not bought or sold as slaves. But the phrase karkoitit orjuuden is that freedom from bondage or slavery or surfdom.

"Säkkijärven polkka" despite being a hilarious song, has actually a darker undertone if you examine the lyrics more carefully. It's a story about the people evacuated from the town of Säkkijärvi, from the area of Karelia. They are now safely living in some other place, in Finland and remembering their old hometown that is now forever lost to the Russian invaders. The only thing that they have left of their old home is this merry tune.

My Vaari (grandfather) always listened to Veteraanin iltahuuto (#2) in quiet and solemn respect. He never went into details about his 5 years in front but he was an artillery observer, fire control and messenger. His duties was to escort fresh troops to the frontline and to make sure they got into right unit and as artillery observer he were to guide and correct fire of those batteries attached to him. He had a remarkable record of not losing a single man during his escort duties to the front neither did he lose anyone in his fire control unit as a Vänrikki (sub-lieutenant).

Just found your channel and I like what you are doing so I subscribed. Also, welcome to Finland (although you've been here for a while already) and I am glad to hear you've liked it here so far. Some people find it hard to cope here, for various reasons so I really hope you'll make it and enjoy living here. From what I can see, you are really getting to know and understand the Finnish culture, history and mentality so it helps you alot. And I can see you already understand the most important things. Language may be the biggest hurdle, but it isn't impossible to learn and the good thing is, unlike English, learning Finnish gets easier as you progress with it.
About this video; the second song always gets me in tears. I heard it first time live, performed by a veteran choir of 900 Finnish and Estonian volunteer veterans of WW2, and it was so emotional I can feel it even today. You can actually find a video of one such performance in UA-cam, and I recommend you watching it too (maybe not for reaction video purpose but just for yourself).
Anyways, will continue to follow this channel for sure. And if you need help with stuff like battling the bureucracy or learning the language or what not, I'd be happy to help. Although I am sure you already have a bunch of Finns offering the same :D

I’m a Finnish mother of two and I have never heard either one of these songs. Especially the second song, it should be played at schools. Wow. It really is very touching and I can only imagine the life of my grandmother back then. She was only 3 yrs old, when the war broke and her little brother was 2. They had lost their father to cancer before the war broke so my greatgrandmothet was a single mother of two small kids in the 30’s when the war broke in ’39…
For some reason, mother only send her son to Sweden to safety, but she didn’t send my grandmother. She was here, witnessing the misery and she still remembers the sounds of the airplanes on the skies before they dropped their bombs…
My grandmother is still alive. She’s now 86 yrs old. She is my inspiration and now I have to show this songs to my kids as well, who are 9 and 10 yrs old already.

I loved this video. The first song is something so Finnish, that I used it in the video series that I made some time ago. I played all the 19 regions of Finland for the perfect score in Geoguessr game.
The second one is a beautiful song but I think it's not very well known among Finns which is a pity. It was heartwarming to see how it touched you and made you to be very serious. I have seen how you usually are so smiling and laughing. I really could see how that song touched you.

Thanks bro! Yes, sadness and joy together. There was also a very brutal war against the Germans, when they were kicked off through Lapland to Norway. And they burned almost the whole Lapland to the ground. The picture with the Soldiers and the Finnish Flag is from that war in Lapland.

Im glad i was recommended this video, i just recently started relearning some heritage i wish i had known long ago. My uncle told me of our finnish story. It started before Finland was a country, my great grandmother and grandfather fled finland or what was Russia during the Bolshevik revolution. Had they didn’t i could have been born a pure bread finn or a mix of finn and russian. Anyway they fled to the States and had to leave with a russian passport. They both didn’t get US citizenship until the 40s. My grandmother was pure of finnish blood(unless russia tainted it beforehand) she met a pure bread dutch that inhabited NJ since the 1600s, my dad and uncle were finns and dutch. My great grandmother spent her days being a cook at one point a cook for JFK’s parents according to my grandfather. My dad met my mother who was from a country that went through similar tribulations like finland (Ecuador peru war) and here i am a mutt. Finnish, dutch, spain, and Ecuadorian. I always leaned toward Ecuadorian and finnish culture more since they are similar yet vastly different. Only up to a few months ive tried to reconnect my finnish roots. At one point i hope to travel to Finland sometime after I graduate and really learn the language and the culture of Finns. Sisu🇫🇮

Million thanks for this video you are doing a great job, so glad to have you in Finland...enjoy! The second song Veteraanin iltahuuto brought tears to my eyes. But Finlandia is in a class of it´s own, the hymn describes everything the people of Finland went through during the war times and there are no words needed just the tones/music says everything needed to be said. It´s impossible to listen to without crying.I was born about 20 years after the war ended and yet my feelings are very strong. That just goes to show how deep in our minds and hearts the wounds from war goes, it takes generations before they heal, we know all too well what Ukrainians are going through. Slava Ukraini!

Säkkijärvi polkka was present among the van's record collection and to prevent the enemy from operating the mines, they started playing the Säkkijärvi polkka - and specifically the version recorded by Vesterinen - without any pauses. This way the frequency over which the triads used by the enemy to detonate the mines were interfered with to the point that the mines were completely unusable.

Thank you for your nice words! Veteraanin iltahuuto is touching. It reminds of sacrifices older generations had to go through less than 100 years ago. There is still few veterans among us but they are getting old. Finland has been in war with Russia every century except this one - yet. I hope it doesn't go to that either. That's one of the reasons why we so desperately want Ukraine to win their war against Russia. Slava Ukraini!

I cannot listen to the second song, Veteraanin iltahuuto, without getting tears in my eyes. My grandfather fought in the war, and the song just makes the events seem so much more real than any books or even films or documentaries do (in my case, at least). Well, the war in Ukraine is like a repetition of those events, just a different time and different target, but the same unprovoked war, trying to take over a peaceful and sovereign country.

Those pictures are probably from Winter war, 15 months later after that Continuation war broke out. Every single time I hear Veteraanin iltahuuto, I remember how many lives were lost... We ARE grateful that they fought at the risk of their lives to save our land. We never forget. ❤️ 🇫🇮

The veterans' song - during WW2, Finland had problems with their eastern neighbor, just like Ukraine has today. Many young men and women never came back from those wars. On Finland’s Independence Day, Dec. 6, my mother taught me to always light a candle in the window ”to lead those who never came back home again”, I still do it.

The picture that's on the screen when the 2nd verse of the 2nd song starts is from the spot where the borders of Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet and the Finnish troops planted that flag to mark the end of the war for Finland as we had drove the last German troops out of Finnish territory. It was also the anniversary of the start of the winter war on the 30th of November, Himmetä ei muisto koskaan saa.
