Actually, the aero spike engine does exist. My grandfather worked on the x-33 (real life ssto). It used four aero spikes to get to orbit. They built one aero spike for testing but the x-33 project was cancelled because it was deemed impossible.

The recommended list is a clusterfuck in general for me. Game Theory, Minecraft, Roblox, and a couple of videos in a language that apparently Google doesn't know I can't read.
I would really like to see what you could come up with in Career mode while trying to only build SSTO Spaceplanes. Admittedly, it would only be difficult until you land on one of the moons. Maybe instead, while on Science mode, see about conquering the two primary challenges; getting your first SSTO SP into orbit using low tech and very few parts, then try to land an SSTO on the Mun before nukes. I can only get that second part to work with refueling.
latt mowne Sorta. His first SSTO was a rocket, not a space plane. And first Mun lander was a shuttle. Still, Thrimm has done more for early career sstos than anyone on UA-cam. Actually, I think he is the only one who has done early career sstos, though Matt has a huge amount of pretty early options as well. I learn everything I know about sstos from these two.
Yeah, my first interplanetary mission, TECHNICALLY, was a fly-by of Duna. Then my pilot, who I made sure was not Jeb OR Val, got stranded in a solar orbit. My second mission was a Gilly landing, and I think three ion engines were overkill. Now, Bill's on his way to Dres with only a probe core to keep him company.
One of the best tutorials I would recommend is showing how far/which planets you can get to with things that arn't the biggest Rocket. spacecraft built with the biggest engine being the T-30 engine type craft. It would be useful for career and science builds where we need to unlock the final rocket. Love the Videos keep up the work!
For landing on Duna I suppose the orbit insertion direction wouldn't matter a huge deal since the extra m/s surface velocity will likely be aerobraked away anyway. Getting the direction right on ascent however is alot more helpful, and saves alot of dV as you noted.
yes, Duna was also my first interplanetary mission. the thing is, i had hit up Mun, Minmus and Kerbin so much by then, Duna was a piece of cake. well, to be fair, if i had not known about the low atmosphere density/pressure, it may not have been as easy for me... my problem is places with fairly high gravity and no atmosphere.
Regarding aerobraking, they say the place in the real Solar System which takes the least delta-V for a return mission is Mars's moon Phobos. You get aerobraking on the way there, and leaving the surface takes almost no delta-V.
If you do start making space stations, in the latest version of KSP, please explain how to build one without it wobbling itself into a frenzy and then exploding!
Oh man.. reminds me of the first time I landed a kerbal on Duna... I'd accidentally bounced the lander hard, broke the landing gear and snapped off the engine. I had to then send a drone ship to rescue jeb. However, I forgot solar panels on the last stage of the rescue ship, and at the time I was unable to operate it properly without electrics. so.... after managing to get jeb into duna orbit, I had to send another ship to rescue the rescue pod.
Matt! You should build a Minmus base that is connected to a space station in Geostationary Orbit and have a giant ladder so kerbals can climb to space.
Just gulped down the entire Blunderbirds series. Top stuff, entertaining and informative - but the kerning between the L and U in the main title just sets my teeth on edge...
duna was my first interplanetary and i had just enough fuel to get an intercept with kerbin. Good thing I aerobraked on duna a ton and at kerbin to slow me down to deorbit
It is possible to build really strong legs out of stock parts. Check out kerbalx, there are people who did it before. The legs work by using docking ports and metal beams.
In fact i love your Blunderbirds videos because one of my friends started ksp a few weeks ago and i'm always doing rescue missions because he is getting stuck everywhere 😖
On all your launches you end up tapering the throttle before you're out of the atmosphere. Before I thought you were trying to keep TWR under 2.0 to keep the gravity turn coming, but sometimes it looks like you're trying to keep the apoapsis 1 minute in front of you. What limits are you trying to stay within?
Can you make a tutorial on how to make an ultra-heavy rocket? Like 500 tons to LKO. I built a Saturn V look alike with a payload capacity of like ~150 tons to LKO, which has served me well, for building my space stations or having interplanetary missions. But I really want to build a fuel freighter to ship my fuel from my minimus mine, but it would just take too long to send it in 100-200 ton pieces. If i could lift 500 tons, I could build it in 5 launches I think.
Kerbin, 90 mps: solar panel destroyed by aero forces. Duna sandstorm: solar panel is shiny Btw, cuz of low pressure in duna atmosphere sandstorms are fine unless there are rocks and sand. Also btw, the solar panel should be destroyed anyways because there WERE rocks and sand.
im not new to the game but never really used fuel or made rockets as i commonly use cheats to make silly things that somehow fly. I have recently tried to test my skill as ive used no cheats to get a rocket to duna and managed to guess almost exactly how much delta v i needed to get there and it was all good until the landing where i had only used 2 parachutes instead of 4, it bounced on its legs but didnt explode and managed to land upside down sacrificing 3 of the 6 antennas. also it was a ship with no return planned as it only used parachutes and landing legs.
Why do you have to jettison the heat shield after reentry? I haven't watched the video yet, and I don't know if Matt does this, but I'm just wondering.
+Rokas Klenauskis Not on most planets, but Jool's moons are regularly used to gravity assist (brake?) into Jool's orbit. You don't think you can in real life though.
We need Matt to rescue the recommended list.
WTF is ROBLOX and why should I care?
Gotta love the Blunderbirds! Nice one mate.
Oh cool, I'm surprised no one has ever replied, you got recommended to me a while back, nice to see you here!
hey marcus nice to see you!
Marcus House it was albert

It does.
And my great grandfather Bill Whittle helped on the saturn v, skylab, and the silicon paneling for the space shuttles. His name is in the moon.

I have no intention of bragging, but he really did work on the X-33 project.
0:17 Matt Lowne's evil alter ego latt mowne was trying to rescue him first! XD
don't worry, the flunderbirds are no match for the blunderbirds!
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... and you pull it off well. Kudos.
11:00 Matt, do docking with an unpowered ship in a collision course with a celestial body. Like in interstellar!!!
I love these types of intros! 👍🏼❤️
This series is by a large margin the funniest Kerbal series on UA-cam. Keep rocking them!

Matt, my first interplanetary mission was a duna SSTO thanks to your tutorial
Mine was to eve cuz I was following the contracts from careeer mode so yea I struggled but my design was decent enough to work
why is youtube recomending me roblox video's now? Matt, what did you do?

ksp has become to logical, an example of this is that if you convert jool's mass into energy you would get one joule of energy
Mighty V2 what

I always watch matt lowne and play ksp on the side. I've went like 12 hours+ straight doing just that so many times.

Matt, how many hours do you have in KSP?
by 2021 i suspect 10000 hours
For landing on Duna I suppose the orbit insertion direction wouldn't matter a huge deal since the extra m/s surface velocity will likely be aerobraked away anyway. Getting the direction right on ascent however is alot more helpful, and saves alot of dV as you noted.

Duna and back using only monnopropelent engines!!
Love the interaction level that u have with Reddit, these Blunderbirds missions are so fun to watch. ❤️
I-Beams make nice landing legs for recoverable boosters, for future reference.
Blunderbirds back at it again!
I'm just curious, what was your first interplanetary mission Matt?
And did you mess up at any point?

The VentureStar, which was meant to be a replacement for the space shuttle before being canceled in 2001, was going to use an aerospike engine.
Regarding aerobraking, they say the place in the real Solar System which takes the least delta-V for a return mission is Mars's moon Phobos. You get aerobraking on the way there, and leaving the surface takes almost no delta-V.
Digging that Eggman theme intro, awesome man!
If you do start making space stations, in the latest version of KSP, please explain how to build one without it wobbling itself into a frenzy and then exploding!
Someone still uploads this game. THANK U

I’m in band and we played Colonel Bogey March and I just realized that’s the intro song to the Blunderbirds🤯
Matt! You should build a Minmus base that is connected to a space station in Geostationary Orbit and have a giant ladder so kerbals can climb to space.
I thought of a suggestion. Make a space station out of used parts that detach to make something beautiful.
Hard mode: impress me
10:45 - Is it difficult to rendezvous straight from the surface like that?
Can you please make a detailed video on how to build an SSTO? It’s been 3 years and I still fail at it
Haha me too, he released an interplanetary SSTO Guide, just search "Matt lowne SSTO guide" I know this comment was written 2 years ago but eh
3:55 I think that is a RUD. Rapid unscheduled disassembly
If you’re tired of Apollo style missions, you could totally make a rover, since I don’t think you did one for your Blunderbirds series yet.
Just gulped down the entire Blunderbirds series. Top stuff, entertaining and informative - but the kerning between the L and U in the main title just sets my teeth on edge...
I love the blunderbirds intro
I hope they add stock landing legs more like the Falcon 9's. The biggest stock ones we have at the moment aren't big enough.
YES please do orbital rendezvous!!! I literally have no idea how to do one.
good video matt you are really good on ksp
duna was my first interplanetary and i had just enough fuel to get an intercept with kerbin. Good thing I aerobraked on duna a ton and at kerbin to slow me down to deorbit
The intro is just hilarious^^
Hey Matt, love the blunder birds series. I like the idea of doing a new science mode to do some more in depth tutorials.
It is possible to build really strong legs out of stock parts. Check out kerbalx, there are people who did it before. The legs work by using docking ports and metal beams.
Apollo style makes mission easier, I could easily go to Minmus with 2 Kerbonauts.
In fact i love your Blunderbirds videos because one of my friends started ksp a few weeks ago and i'm always doing rescue missions because he is getting stuck everywhere 😖
I need a good tutorial on how to plan multiple transfer windows to perform gravity boosts
I just got ksp today, I’m exited to play it.
A Realism overhaul series would be pretty cool
I wonder what proportion of the comments on Matt's reddit account are "I got u fam"...
I would love to see a "The Martian" style rescue where a Kerbal is stranded on a base with limited supplies (Life Support Mods).
Somehow it just occurred to me that a real Falcon 9 on Kerbin would be an SSTO with an insanely large payload capacity.
3:43 if the landing Legs can't take the weight off the rocket. when how was it sitting on the launch pad Just fine?
Well there's more force put on them when you're landing, even if only landing slowly
What is the name of that shell that you put at the top of your rockets? And how do I go about finding that??
On all your launches you end up tapering the throttle before you're out of the atmosphere. Before I thought you were trying to keep TWR under 2.0 to keep the gravity turn coming, but sometimes it looks like you're trying to keep the apoapsis 1 minute in front of you. What limits are you trying to stay within?
You could make the Rubik's cube tutorial part of your end credits.
Can you make a tutorial on how to make an ultra-heavy rocket? Like 500 tons to LKO. I built a Saturn V look alike with a payload capacity of like ~150 tons to LKO, which has served me well, for building my space stations or having interplanetary missions. Cool rescue!👍
The name of the real life Aerospike SSTO is the Haas 2CA made by Arca Aerospace.
I just love the intros the these videos! ;)
THE CAPTIONS AT THE INTRO OMFG
Kerbin, 90 mps: solar panel destroyed by aero forces.
Duna sandstorm: solar panel is shiny
Btw, cuz of low pressure in duna atmosphere sandstorms are fine unless there are rocks and sand.
Also btw, the solar panel should be destroyed anyways because there WERE rocks and sand.
How did you get the cool dust storms on duna
Matt! Solar escape rescue! Solar impact rescue! :D
XD the blunderbirds x) 5! 4! 3! 2! 1! there are go!!!
It'd be neat to see other reuseable launch vehicles for Blunder Birds? (i.e. Adeline, Pegasus, dreachaser, stratolaunch)
True, Adeline isn't fully reuseable, but it would be neat to see a version of it in KSP!
How do you do that aerodynamic shrouding or shell or whatever that surrounds your spacecraft? Is that stock or a mod?
im not new to the game but never really used fuel or made rockets as i commonly use cheats to make silly things that somehow fly.
You should do the Martian with Hab, mav x2, supply missions, rovers, pathfinder and Hermes
Might take a few videos
How did you get the checker pattern on the fuel tank?
U should make a “The Martian” style serie in ksp.
Yeah true...
No u
That title is copyright
Jeb: dont you think its a bit stormy in this place?
you should rescue a kerbal whose stuck at the bottom of the ocean on kerbin or laythe!
9:31
A pilot tries to go kamikaze into an enemy ship (1939) (Colo(u)rised)
Nice work!! How long did it take for you to make it?
An Apollo style falcon 9 inspired SSTO. What could be better
Apparently on the Xbox one edition of ksp there is an achievement to go to jool and back but I am not sure if it is a joke by the developers or not
What's the song at the beginning that plays for about 3 seconds?
What do you avrage on 3x3
8:45 "have a little bit of fuel left"... DV showing 2m/s... i guess technically, yes, but what would 2m/s actually do? lol
Could you do something in the before/after kerbin mods?
Hey Matt! Can you please tell me how you installed camera tools? That would be very helpful.
To clarify, does those work for standalone non-rescue duna missions? I love the sleek design
DatMonkey5100 probably
I can get in orbit around the sun, but can't land on the moon.

:P
Why do you have to jettison the heat shield after reentry? I haven't watched the video yet, and I don't know if Matt does this, but I'm just wondering.
Was that Sonic '06 music in the intro?
Here's a question: can you do a gravity break to get into orbit?
+Rokas Klenauskis
Not on most planets, but Jool's moons are regularly used to gravity assist (brake?) into Jool's orbit. You don't think you can in real life though.
Lol i was solving a proffesor cube while you said that
You could make a serie of testing subscribers ships

Would that lander have had enough fuel to do a Martian recreation?
Yay blunderbirds
What about people on ksp forms?
Oh a Moho return
when my freinds walk in on me playing ksp they look down at the floor like there disappointed in me because its all i do except for work
Please do a tutorial on gravity assists.
There's a whole lot more people on the Discord than I thought
