  • Walter "Jerry" Summey proved to be one of our favorite oral history participants. Jerry spent several hours speaking with members of the Historic Saluda Committee on July 8, 2021, sharing many a tale about his life growing up in Saluda, including stories that have been passed down to him. We have broken this interview down into chapters due to its length (See Below). Jerry was born in 1944 in Charleston, SC to Walter Dewitt Summey and Frances Arkansas Case Summey, who were serving their country during WWII. Though born in SC, Jerry and his family moved back to Saluda after the war and have very deep roots in Saluda's history. The Summey and the Case families have been in Saluda for many generations.
A special thank you goes out to Jerry's niece, Janet Clayton for setting up this interview and for sharing family pictures. Her father, Bobby Campbell, Jerry's brother in-law, and Jay Summey, Jerry's brother, are also featured in these photographs. We also appreciate the assistance of Jerry's wife, Lola Summey, for her role with this interview.
