Going Home: Saluda’s Music Traditions
The Historic Saluda Committee is pleased offer “Going Home: Saluda’s Music Traditions,” an oral history film documentary celebrating Saluda’s musical heritage to our UA-cam followers at no cost. DVDs are still available for sale. All proceeds benefit future projects.
The old saying is, “You can’t go home again.” But, maybe you can. The Historic Saluda Committee has been collecting oral histories through audio and video since 2010, primarily from its senior citizens. A common theme relayed during the gathering of these stories is a deep nostalgia for the rich and diverse musical traditions that were once common in Saluda. The Historic Saluda Committee has enlisted the help of the Polk County Film Initiative to take these histories, collect a few new ones, and then roll them into a fascinating oral history film documentary that portrays Saluda's rich musical heritage, where the past meets the present. Sure to delight, these recollections include tales of the old time square dances, shape note singing, legendary fiddle makers and players, the influence of the railroad, a ragtime pianist, gospel greats, ballad singers, musical miracles, African-American history, Coon Dog Day, a famous baritone crooner and more. Rolling into the present day, featured is contemporary gospel, old-time and Americana acts and some of today's great music venues, including a visit to Studio B at Western NC's famed radio station WNCW. This film will not only appeal to Saluda's people, but to folks from all walks of life who appreciate good stories, good music and history, especially from a small mountain town in Western North Carolina. By the way, who says you can’t go home again!
Over sixty individuals from the past and present day are highlighted in the film along with a smorgasbord of musicians, such as the Aaron Burdett Band, Tellico, Changed, James Metcalf and The Colt Creek Band, and many more.
Involved in the making of the film include the Creator and Producer: Cindy Stephenson Tuttle; Cinematographer, Writer and Editor: Kirk Gollwitzer; Associate Producer, Writer and Narrator: Martin Anderson; Creative Consultant: Carolyn Ashburn; Location Director, First Assistant Camera and Still Photography: Lavin Cuddihee.
Funding was provided by the Polk County Community Foundation’s Saluda Fund, City of Saluda, Historic Saluda Committee, Heartwood Contemporary Crafts Gallery, WNCW a Media Sponsor, The Purple Onion, Betsy and Allen Burdett, Rhonda Corley, Anita Ogden Moore, Historic Thompson’s Store, Martin Anderson and Brad and Cindy Stephenson Tuttle
The Historic Saluda Committee was formed by a group of concerned citizens who wished to preserve the historical integrity of the town. The grassroots effort spawned interest from Saluda City officials and in June 2010 the Saluda City Commissioners voted to make the committee an advisory committee to the city and committee members were appointed. The HSC meets on the second Friday of each month at 2:00 p.m. at the Saluda Public Library. The public is welcome. For more information go to www.historicsaluda.org or email historicsaluda@gmail.com.

This is an excerpt from the oral history interview we conducted with Pauline Gordon Corn in 2014, but only recently released to the public. We felt this snippet was worthy of standing on its own merit mainly due to the interest in the history of Madame Phoebia Sullivan (1855-1956). Born to former slaves in South Carolina, Phoebia was a healer, herb doctor, mystic, prophet, and leader in Saluda’...

The cafe started in the basement of the "Big House," Then it moved to the structure across from the park and in front of the temple. That structure was sold to Gangwell Jeter and his wife Ella as a residence. Then the cafe was finally relocated in back of the big house in a new cinder block structure which was later converted to a home for Phoebia's youngest daughter when she retired from RJ Reynolds and move back to Saluda in the early 70's.

Hopefully, the pastor will have some knowledge of this grave. If not, maybe some of the others who attend this church will know. The cross looks like it had a coat of paint not too long ago and with it being wooden, it can't have been there a lot of years. Maybe it's the 2nd or 3rd wooden cross to be placed there. It would be interesting to know who and when the person was buried.

When a stone is placed on a grave maker, it is a reminder that someone who knew the deceased. It is an old tradition. You will see it practiced more in Jewish cemeteries. It is a tradition followed by other folks. The other rectangular stone or wooden marker could be what is referred to as a 'footstone" usually found in older cemeteries. Also when you see a grave usually outside the perimeter of the main graveyard it was a practice of certain denominations in times past if someone took their life that was the practice of the time. Not saying that was the case of that particular grave!

I have never watched this channel but as for this one video I feel sorry for the old man. It seems he was exploited. The old man also underscored why I think people would NEVER want to eat a possum. If a possum is a scavenger then why not also eat a buzzard or a vulture or some carrion? But truth be known people eat PIGS who will eat ANYTHING and they eat Catfish and CLAMS and SNAILS all of which are SCAVENGERS who will eat any ol' DEAD THING.
