Here's a look at the famous intro scene to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The English translation and voice acting is infamous among gamers, but how does it compare to the original Japanese text and original voice acting? Here's a look! I've also provided a quick translation of what's being said in the Japanese version.

It would be nice to see humanity put aside their differences not just with each other, but with nature and such, and try to forge a better tomorrow, but right now, it's just not happening. I feel like if Richter said "I believe in the power of compassion and whatnot," like that was something he personally believed in, I'd be more forgiving of the line. An interesting piece of history: The "miserable little pile of secrets" line is in fact the accepted translation of a quote by the philosopher Andre Malraux. It wasn't bad translation work on part of this localization - and knowing that, Dracula was probably meant to be drolly quoting literature, not bombastically ranting. The English version is interesting. Dracula seems a bit melancholic and self-loathing. He justifies his presence, deflecting the blame onto his summoners. He justifies the tributes he received, arguing that it's already normal for religions to do naught but take and then, when told that he's unworthy of helping mankind, he questions the value of man before asserting it as worthless. He seems hurt by the fact that he doesn't qualify as a real human being while Richter lectures him on why he shouldn't exist (something which I think Dracula may, deep down, agree with).
The Japanese version however seems to focus on portraying him as arrogant, selfish and self-obsessed in order to create the love-vs-power/self-vs-collective duality.

There's a little thing about the differences in script: In Japanese, Richter is clearly fighting with his ideals, like a classic hero, anime protagonist, knight in shining armor type. But in the English version, he seems like he's just here because it's his job as a Belmont to kill Dracula. He's kind of treating Dracula like a normal boss monster. (It's possible I feel like that because of Richter's voice performance.)
It's a little like how in some Arthurian stories, the knights are just normal people, not paragons of virtue.

That's the difference between professional voice actors (Japanese) and some random non-union guys pulled out of a college dorm room or off the street who would work for super cheap and quickly (English). Professional union English voice actors are EXPENSIVE - much more expensive than Japanese - primarily because English voice actors negotiate royalties from profit, whereas Japanese actors do not (project fee only, but they also get paid for appearances, interviews, and promotions related to the final product). Japanese publishers don't want to pay royalties on profits, so they don't hire high-quality, Union-represented English voice actors when re-dubbing something for English-speaking countries.

Even though it wasn't on purpose, I feel like the over-the-top PS1 English dub sounds like the corny acting you would see in one of the lesser-known Universal or Hammer horror films; which I still think works considering how much influence the Castlevania series took from those movies as far as monsters and aesthetics go. Don't get me wrong: it's still hilariously awful but I can't help but see it as fitting considering the series' influence.
The PSP/Requiem dub on the other hand to me mostly just sounds like Fire Emblem characters bombing at performing Shakespeare; I mean, it is TECHNICALLY better and as much as I love most of the voice actors involved in the redub, it just doesn't work as well as the original Japanese or the initial English dub, for the previously stated reasons, in my eyes.

Richter: "Tribute?! You call stealing the souls of men, kidnapping women to be used as sacrifices, and using your army to cause mass genocide *tribute?!"*
Dracula: "The same can be said of all religions, Belmont! It is what caused humanity to bring this upon themselves, when they tore the love of my life away from me, and burned her at the stake for accusations of WITCHCRAFT!"
Richter: "Judging all humans from the actions of a few is not the right thing to do, Dracula! And it is certainly no excuse for your heinous actions!"
Dracula: "Listen to you, Belmont. You fight for these humans, despite said humans literally excommunicating your clan and discriminating your family! Think about what humanity has done, and you'll see what I mean."
Richter: "My family fights monsters for the people in need, because if we don't, then nobody will! It is the very thing we have done for centuries, and I plan to do the same with you, Dracula! Not because we want to, but because the people are counting on us!"
Dracula: "Of course... Then, allow us to see which of our views are true!"

The VA for Richter is definitely better. But I'll take the US Dracula any day of the week. He speaks with such an awesome and vaguely sinister flourish.

sorry but Dracula is WAAAAYYY better in English. Norio gave barely any kind of emotion.

ENG Richter sounds like he's going to tell the Belmonts to roll out instead of the autobots.

The dialogue it's quite hammy in japanese, but the voice acting it's superior to the english one

    Fun fact :
The japanese voices actors of Richter and Dracula is the same voice actor of Jotaro and Dio from Jojo's bizarre adventure 1992 CD drama

The Japanese script is based on the ending cutscene of Rondo of Blood and interestingly, it was translated in the English version, dub and all.
