yes exactly! I'm trying to use my Elytra less, but it's tough because it's so convenient to move quickly between areas. The other problem is that nobody is building roads, or rail networks connecting their bases together anymore. They're all isolated builds in a massive world. Nothing beats using boats, horses, minecart or plain old walking to move and explore around the world. This encourages making scenic paths and roads and the world feels so much more complete. On the other hand, the Elytra indirectly allows us to build things at a much bigger scale than before. Finding the biomes for the rare materials you need, going back and forth between your new build and your storage takes a lot less time
I hate using an extra because there's something so unique about being IN the world, that said, I just don't use the elytra often, it's useful for exploring new areas, but after that I try to avoid it
I've been playing since alpha and I've never obtained the elytra. When it was added I was starting my young adult life and spent much less time in minecraft, so I never really got around to it-- which means it never changed the way I played :) I still build paths and make my builds centered around being on the ground, and I have a lot of pride in that
I'm in the exact same boat. I've been playing since 2009, and I've never once touched it. It looks fun, but when it came out, I was playing other things and whenever I got the Minecraft bug, I never got to the point that I cared to get it. Just yesterday I finished building an elevated 5-block-wide bridge that spanned 2000m on my brother's server so we can use our horses more efficiently between our two bases. It's not something I've ever really thought about.
got into an argument with my friend cuz he wanted to speedrun to the end JUST to get elytra in our multiplayer world (start of the smp), ruins everyones fun, and progression :(
i love boats, but i tend to get too easily lost lol .. i like horses for long journeys & have paths & bridges connecting villages .. plus a rail network .. i prefer creative for getting to flying around & get an overview .. but will often just stack up with scaffolding too .. im kinda new to elytra & i can see them being good for long journeys like over the nether roof or the end but other wise i am ok without them {note i mainly play in passive mode so have never solo beaten the dragon or found the stronghold .. on servers it was easier as with friends but even then i rarely used elytra
