Andy- If pigs could fly? Right? LOL!!! Like I said before, the 353/354 models are similar to the SInger Merritt 1873, which I have. My advice to anyone is that if you have a machine with this hook timing belt underneath AND it has a "free arm", be careful!! I have been sewing several times using the free arm & the fabric got caught in the timing pulley of the hook. I have always been fortunate to get the fabric out from between the pulley & the belt. And, I have always had to wash the fabric I was sewing because the black belt material transferred to the fabric. Another great teaching moment... Thank you, Sir!!

OUCH! I always thought a free arm would be great for sewing cuffs, etc. I never thought of the possibility of what you mention. Thanks for sharing so others can know. Take Care.

Hi Andy, thank you so much for your videos, they are very useful. I had a Singer 353 Starlet and I had a problem due to the machine getting out of adjustment, and the needle began to hit the box of the bobbin body. I adjusted the needle bar following your instructions and the same to adjust the needle leaving behind the hook of the bobbin case... the problem is that now the bobbin case does not move when sewing, it only moves if I do it manually, I have reviewed the position of the belt in the lower part of the machine... but there is no way. Any idea why it happens, or suggestions? Thank you so much

When you look at the belt and two pulleys, the pulley on your right is on the bottom of the Vertical Shaft. On the top of that shaft up in the horizontal arm, is a plastic gear that is falling apart due to age. When the gear crumbles and looses teeth the shaft will not turn so the belt wont turn so the hook will not rotate.\
This happens to about a dozen models Singer made. You can buy the gear online for about $10 and replace it. On some models it is easy to do. On the 353/354 it is much more involved. While other models allow for removing the pulley, loosening the gear, pulling the shaft down an inch and inserting the new gear, etc. your model requires removing many parts like the handwheel, needle bar, presser bar, and pulling the horizontal arm shaft out part way to remove the gear/shaft out the TOP of the machine. It is quite a job, but can be done.
The service manual has a step-by-step guide for doing it, about 12 steps out the 12 steps back in. To see what the gear/shaft is like you can watch parts of this gear replacement video where I show another model and the front/bottom replacement of that gear: ua-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/v-deo.html On your machine there is no front access to the gear, and sometimes the gear is held to the shaft with roll pin instead of screws.
To see the instruction you are welcome to email andymanuals53@gmail.com and ask for the 353 service manual. I will have Alan email you back with a PDF copy of the Service Manual.
One of my viewers says he developed a way to change the gear without removing it out the top. Here is his explanation with pictures: ua-cam.com/video/Qv-UxAjbD9E/v-deo.html&lc=Ugyo0D6E7guPy0f0IwB4AaABAg.9_hJZjPEW3-9_jb2eyErhN
You can look at that and see what you think.
It is too bad about these gears b/c the model 353/354 are very good machines, strong & versatile. The gear is the only weak link. Thanks for watching my channel. Good Luck. BTW, the Gear is Singer Part #155819 and there are many sellers online for under $10

If you want to do the work (I'm not sure from your comment) you can find used vintage parts on eBay from sellers who dismantle the machine and sell off the parts (parting out a machine). Some new parts are made like tension springs, bobbin winder tires, and motor belts, also sold on eBay or www.sewingpartsonline.com/ (usually more pricey). If you are asking where to take it to have the work done, that's a lot harder. Very few repair shops want to deal with a vintage machine and just will say it can't be fixed or it's not worth the cost and try to sell you a new model. As an example, I live in a Metro area with a population of 5 million and there are two shops I know of. One does fantastic work and charges an arm & leg, the other does hit-or-miss work but only charges a few fingers.

Have you ever changed to bevel gear on top of vertical shaft on a singer tempo 20 model 5802;c.
The vertical shaft dosent seem to drop enough to release the bevel gear from its position there is a slotted screw in the gear .I had to drill a hole in front of machine to see the type of screw.
Am I right in thinking the top shaft has to come out to fit the new gear .
    Thanks for any help

I have not done that, Reggie. I've had correspondence with viewers who managed to change the gear and I have studied the original parts manual. That part manual shows the shaft is inside an assembly and not a bare shaft like the model in my video. About 1/4 the way up the shaft from the bottom bearing shows an "arm shaft retaining ring" that looks to me like an E-Clip similar to this one: www.lowes.com/pd/Hillman-1-in-E-Clips/3012949 But take a look for yourself as you should be able to download the parts diagram/list at this link; www.supsew.com/download/Singer/Singer%205802,%205805,%205806,%205810.pdf
The guys who emailed about this both confirmed the clip is there and prevents the shaft from being pulled down or even all the way out the top, but had to be removed to lower the shaft to change the gear. One guy also told me the gear is different than in my video b/c 5802 is not in the group of models that Singer used that gear on, but on these 5800 models that were made in Brazil. www.amazon.com/YICBOR-Vertical-Shaft-353273-002-Singer/dp/B07FT97248 I have not been able to verify that with anyone else though. I've never had luck finding Service Manual for what I call the "Brazil Models" though. The parts manual may be helpful in determining if some of the front or side panels can be safely removed to get to the clip. The other guys also said they drilled a hole in the back of the machine to get access to the gear set screw. That's all I have, Reggie. Good Luck. ua-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/v-deo.html

@@reggiejameson4025 Sure, you're welcome. You'll see in the parts diagram the shaft is inside a cylinder or tube of some kind and the two viewers never said if it is stationary, plastic, or metal. It sounds like a complicated repair but I hope you work it out.

I have a stylist 533 and it has 2 belts one for the motor and one further over, I assume it's a timing belt, but I can't find a video on how to change it, can you tell me how or send a link.i have searched and searched without any luck

I've never seen a video for replacing that belt, but then I've never had a defective belt that needed replacing. The problem was usually the four plastic gears on the bottom.
You can buy the Service Manual for $4.99 manualsoncd.com/product/singer-500-sewing-machine-service-manual-518-538-513-514-533/
It does not specify replacing the belt but does instruct how to remove the horizontal shaft and hook shaft which hold the two pulleys for the timing belt.

I believe you have a broken plastic gear on top of the vertice shaft. This can happen with plastic gears of the age of your machine (Singer Model 353/354 and others) The 353 is one of the harder models to change the gear on, and many times the gear/shaft must come out the top of the machine. I made a video for changing the gear on some other models, but you can remove the gear easier on them. Here is that video to give you an idea of your problem. ua-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/v-deo.html
You can buy the gear/shaft many places, including here: site.tandtrepair.com/Genie_Series.html
This seller will give you 20% off as an Andy Tube Viewer by using coupon code andy-h-yt
You can purchase a copy of the Service Manual for models 353/354 on line, and it shows all the steps to replace that gear/remove the shaft. Here is one example of where you can buy the Service Manual: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-353-354-genie-sewing-machine-service-manual/ If you can find a trusted sewing machine repair shop that will do the work (many don't work on vintage machines) then expect a large price for the work. Some viewers have hired a motorcycle mechanic instead, or a person who repairs lawn service equipment as they have small mechanics experience. A couple viewers even went to the local high school or trade school and the instructor made it an extra credit project for the class members. The Service Manual describes and shows pictures for the process, which is about 12 steps just to get it out, then you must put it back and set the timing, needle bar heigh, presser bar height, etc. which is all shown in the manual. It is not easy, but many, many people have done it. One step at a time, take your own pictures as you go.

How to change the gear on the vertical shoft Singer 353

You can buy the Service Manual here for $9.00 manualsoncd.com/product/singer-353-354-genie-sewing-machine-service-manual/ it shows a 12-step process for removing the gear and shaft OUT THE TOP of the machine instead of the bottom like in my video ua-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/v-deo.html it is a big project. Some people have figured a way to get the gear out of the side of the machine after drilling out the rivets that hold it to the shaft. Then they followed my video to remove/replace the gear/shaft from the bottom. It is still not easy but they said better than the 12-step method.
