  • A Layman's Reaction: Jumpin Jive - Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers
Here's a clip from the movie "Stormy Weather" (1943) featuring Cab Calloway and his orchestra performing "Jumpin Jive". After awhile they let the Nicholas Brothers jump in and lend their feet to the action.

(new sub) This performance it's been said was done in one take. Unfortunately all those great instruments aren't even used anymore -- the great saxophone, the horns, the piano(NOT the keyboard), the strings. It was a time of all the great musicals & a time when you could have an entire evening out for dinner, drink, a show & dancing. . Many famous people were good dancers -- Johnny Carson, Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason, Doris Day, Audrey Hepburn, a long list that goes on. At that time everyone had to know how to dance, even a little bit. For those too young to know what those weird sounding "words" were that were not really words, it's called "scat" -- something very common back then that added lots of fun to lyrics. Ella Fitzgerald was the female master of scat.

Maybe that is why I like those old movies so much...
