You know what's interesting? Geely has a 49% stake in Malaysia's Proton car company, so many recent Proton models are actually Geely cars but in right hand drive. The initial rollouts are complete built-up (CBU) ones straight from China but then Proton began complete knock down assembly. It is these CKD cars that is then exported to other countries such as Kenya, South Africa, and other RHD markets (so it's not just a rebadged Geely). However, many people have noted that the Proton ones, despite the major parts being Chinese, are superior to ones that actually come from China--while still being cheaper than ones that come from Europe. Again, major parts come from China but the actual assembly and small details are well done in Malaysia even though Proton is not exactly the pinnacle of automotive quality (but it does meet the standard; Malaysia's industrial capacity is actually good enough that some Mercedes models are assembled here, among others). This is why Geely was so interested in the technical partnership with Proton. Geely and Proton have already established a joint R&D facility in both Malaysia and the PRC. This is actually a good move for Geely (who owns Volvo, by the way) because they can make sure their export models are actually desirable. Malaysian car companies actually have to keep their cars inexpensive so that it is more affordable to the general populace but at the same time has good enough quality that the locals would buy them (never mind all the tariffs on foreign models that keep Hondas, Toyotas, etc. at an artificially higher price) so the R&D with Geely is not just about the cars themselves but also the manufacturing side of things.

When Chinese buy their own cars, they often purchase the option of having the logos replaced by western ones... at the dealership. It seems like Chinese also don't have high thoughts about their own cars and would rather own a western (or Japanese) one if they could afford them.

You think Russian cars are any different from Chinese ones? Both of those countries are ruled by the people with similar mindset. If Russians had a better choice over Chinese cars such as Russian cars, nobody would buy Chinese cars in russia as well.
Nonsense! Old Soviet cars like the Lada were simple, but very reliable, and well suited to Russian weather. The Lada (VAZ-2101) was based on the excellent Fiat 124 (1967 European Car of the Year).
The Ladas made for export at least were very rugged, just outdated and slightly unsophisticated - simple philosophy, fixed low prices and constructed for DIY tinkering on the street

China does produce high quality goods.
The problem is that for every factory or company producing quality stuff, there are many more who cut so many corners they've made a circle from a square.
But it makes sense, people want cheap stuff and the manufacturers obglige by producing cheap junk.
You buy a car based only on looks.....you get a toy car.

I'd take any 1990s or even 1980s JDM over any brand-new Chinese brand. A smart Russian in the Far East is now holding on to his 1996 Corolla, Sprinter / Carib and is looking for a second one for parts scavenging. There were so many second hand Corollas imported back in the day that the parts can still be found. The most coveted sedan would be something like a late 1980s Crown or Gloria/Laurel. And for trucks, vans, it's more sensible to find something on a Toyota Hiace or Mazda Bongo platform, often they're converted to cheaper LPG.. Generally older Japanese are far more reliable and repairable than all this modern junk.
Yeah 👍
I'm Russian, we remove logos from our cars all the time. We do the same with luxury cars too.

Considering that most countries have home grown industries, we ought to support our local industries rather than buying cheap made in sina stuff. That's how you strengthen your local economy. Keep the money in your country.
Like in communist countries?

They’d better get used to it.
Wow every Chinese car company design is a copy. Look at them!

China has higher quality cars than Russia? Russian made is heavy duty to handle the horrible roads and harsh climate. Russians may prefer dependability over luxury items.
Harley Davidson and Lada had one thing in common, Porsche engineered. engines :) Since then Lada had been taken over by Renault and now they have to return to the trusty and reliable FIAT 125 clones with 1960s technology.
The toolkit included with the Lada 2100 series was impressive though and you could fix the car in a field next to the road with those tools. Been there, done it, bought a new Fiat :D
You think Russian cars are any different from Chinese ones? Both of those countries are ruled by the people with similar mindset. If Russians had a better choice over Chinese cars such as Russian cars, nobody would buy Chinese cars in russia as well.
China Observer spread propanganga.
If I was a Chinese car producer I would send my lower quality stock to Russians. Who else are they going to buy a car from? It's a captive market.
They could buy cars made in India.
The Russians should feel nostalgic, since the Chicom cars are near the same quality as their old Soviet era cars.

You have not got a clue about the quality of Soviet cars, sorry.
