      @@GregRiceTarantulas awesome collection! I don't keep many tarantulas I only have 6 of them but I also keep alot of native spiders because they're interesting too. I have 2 female black widows and several false widows. I also keep frogs, toads, lizards and snakes. I also have 4 rescued eastern box turtles 3 males and 1 female who had babies this year. They're in hibernation right now. I also breed my own dubia and red runner cockroaches and mice. I breed all of my own feeders.

      Wooden tweezers are safer for a very excited spider. I don't tong-feed very often anymore and more or less toss the roaches right to them instead.

    #gregrice why do your spiders have thick webs, in or on. they houses? and if you knock they webs down. why do they put them back??

    • @GregRiceTarantulas
      @GregRiceTarantulas  7 років тому

      I don't knock their webs down unless it's attached to the lid. Spiders are going to do "spidery" things. One of those things is to decorate their homes with webbing. Some species web more than others. They use the webs for prey detection; as ambush predators, the web lets them know exactly what's going on in their enclosure. The vibrations of an insect walking over the webbed ground are felt by their highly sensitive setae, or hairs that cover their bodies, allowing the spider to pinpoint the source of the vibrations and launch an attack.

    Do you feed slings strictly FFF and larva? At what size you start using roaches?

    • @GregRiceTarantulas
      @GregRiceTarantulas  8 років тому

      No, not strictly FFF. When I get baby roaches I'll give them to my slings too. I was careless and fed off all of my adult male B. lateralis and I'm just now getting baby roaches again. Dubia roach newborns are often too big for slings.

  • @RyzoWolf
    @RyzoWolf 8 років тому

    Hey Greg, for each T, do you feed them the insect that is mainly in their species' diet? Or an insect that is commonly eaten from the area the Ts are from?

    • @GregRiceTarantulas
      @GregRiceTarantulas  8 років тому

      +CyanHeart Aono No, I only feed two species of roaches and the occasional mealworm and fruit fly. My spiders come from every continent except for Antarctica and the European Continent. Sourcing bugs from each place isn't feasible and likely isn't legal either. Bugs are bugs after all and my spiders love the roaches.

      Okay. I want to tell you that I have a female Grammostola porteri. I want to add more tarantulas, but where I live (Chile) do not know why they have not imported tarantulas from other sites, are available only endemic. I would like to have those species that you have, they are most beautiful...

    5:48 Did this T know you were going to feed it? It looked like your voice was the dinner bell and the spider just came out slowly and gingerly grabbed the prey off the tongs and went back into its hide :D

    • @GregRiceTarantulas
      @GregRiceTarantulas  8 років тому +2

      Good observation! They will respond to the sound of voices in the room as they are sensitive to all vibrations. Low frequency vibrations work best. Crinkling a paper bag close to their cage will make them come closer. I suppose it sounds like insects rusting through leaf litter.

    #gregrice I'm sorry with all the questions. but I'm new to your channel. and I'm just trying to get rid of my fear of spiders, and they web. I'm scared of them because I got bit by a black widow, and got really sick. I was in the hospital for 3 days sick as a dog. but my other question was I thought tarantulas don't make webs. and on here I see they do.

    • @GregRiceTarantulas
      @GregRiceTarantulas  8 років тому

      +Alex O. I feed based on abdomen size. If they're looking skinny, I'll give them a nice sized meal. A little too fat, and I'll hold off for a few weeks or months depending on the individual.

    Love ur videos,but one thing that I noticed is that ur containers r too small no wonder the T's sometimes hit the walls when getting their prey. I watch Tarantula Addict and Spider-Man and many more and their containers r many times larger then yours r . I love jumping spiders ,they r so cute, I wish that I could find one. Anyway, thanks for ur videos. Is there a reason u keep them in such tiny containers.

    • @GregRiceTarantulas
      @GregRiceTarantulas  7 років тому +1

      Ok, that happened once, and I have no clue why he did that since he already caught the roach. Are you sure about the claim that their containers are "many" times larger? Define "many" please. Even a low number like three is simply untrue. I follow the accepted rule of 3x the legspan horizontal for terrestrials and vertical for arboreals. A few of them were due for an upgrade, I'll give you that, but to assert that I purposely keep my spiders in "tiny" containers is insulting. The vast majority of the shots in this video don't show the whole enclosure, but I assure you, their housing is appropriate.

      +Greg Rice how is this species in terms of care keeping and handling

    • @GregRiceTarantulas
      @GregRiceTarantulas  8 років тому

      E. murinus are easy to keep. They prefer some moisture and deep substrate for digging burrows, though my girl hasn't yet dug one. Handling is ill advised for any tarantula. E. murinus does not tolerate handling, and will not hesitate to bite.

      My very first tarantula was a desert blonde. Dug her up in my backyard too. Sadly, she stopped eating and passed 18 months later. I think she was just very old. She ate well when I first got her, then suddenly stopped eating altogether. I can't say for sure what's going on in your situation. All you can do is continue to offer her food. She might not be hungry.

      You're disappointed when I don't feature a Mexican person? That must be what you mean, because there's a ton of Mexican spiders in this video.
      1:30 Brachypelma boehmei (Mexican Fire-Leg)
      9:37 Brachypelma kahlenbergi (Veracruz Red-Rump)
      10:07 Brachypelma smithi now "hamorii" (Mexican Red-Knee)
      11:05 Aphonopelma chalcodes (Mexican Blonde, Desert Bonde etc. Also native to Arizona) Another one right afterward
      17:48 Another Brachypelma smithi
      19:04 Brachypelma vagans (Mexican Red-Rump) and another right after this one

    You have lots of beautiful Ts... but dude your enclosures need help! You've got huge spiders in tiny spaces!! Give the poor things a decent place to live!

    I have a female tarantula that hasn't eating in almost one year); She still moves and drinks water, but won't eat);

      Is she a Grammostola rosea, or Chilean rose?
      It's a frustrating, but common complaint about that species and others. Continue to offer food monthly until she tires of her hunger strike.

    @ all Tarantula youtuber... You guys dont have to buy thousands of tarantulas when you dont have the money or space to keep them in quality tanks, i cant see it anymore, the spiders pressed in small cups or bottles wtf....... And this coco substrate is piece of s...,,, Buy glass tanks or much bigger plastic tanks. I feel sad specially for your P. cambridgei, the bottle is sooo small..... For me it counts how big and nice the tanks are not how many tarantulas you have.

      Fear not! I have new larger arboreal tanks coming soon in the mail. They measure 4"x4"x7" for my P. ornata slings, and others that are 8"x8"x16" for my juvenile pokies. I will also be using 2.5 gallon aquariums set on their side as arboreal enclosures for my larger Ts, especially the cambridgei. There'll be a big rehouse video uploaded soon showing all this.
      I use now peat as substrate, though I don't think there's anything wrong with coco fiber. It's much more expensive. Please tell me why you think it's no good.

      +Greg Rice Hey, nice to hear about your new tanks. The coco stuff is totally sterile without any microorganism and often mold problems, its hard for the spiders to burrow cause its to soft and the tunnel is not stable. Im from Germany and here almost everyone hates the coco bricks. I use quality ground for flowers mixed with ground from the forest 50/50.A lot of microorganism and small insects are already inside who keeps the tank clean from mold and parts like feeds from the roaches. Also its great to burrow and not so soft.I done a test and rehoused 3 of my tarantulas(T. Stirmi G. Rosea H. Lividum) in tanks with coco substrate and every spider was hanging at the glass and dont want to walk on it. I have to apologize cause of my bad english. I think its cool cause you are the only tarantulas youtuber who answer to my post. I wanna to write much more about tarantula care but my english is to bad. Im not a professional i have spidery since 15 years and i dont like what i see in youtube, spiders in shoeboxes..... bottles.... Cups..... Spiderlinge ok but not adult tarantulas. I think often here its only to have a lot of tarantulas dont matter about good size tanks or places to hide for the spiders.
