My grandmother's cousins are singing in this group. Many years of hearing this wonderful singing with the Associated Note Singers of Ben Hill- Atlanta, GA
Thank you thank you thank you You Tube! My Dad was the leader of the shape note singers at our church. I really miss this art, as many of the young people have not carried on this beautiful art. My Dad taught me when I was a teen how to read the notes. Our family went to conventions around Chicago and Mississippi, and sometimes I can hear the singing in my head and heart. I sang with him on several occasions, and I was so happy I was able to please him. When he passed away, I tried to find some shape note singers in Chicago or the suburbs, so I called my minister. He directed me to someone I could contact, but that person said he was going to “”check around “ but I never heard back from him. I wanted to have shape note singers at his funeral service as a way of honoring him, but it didn’t work out. I am so glad I found these videos- you’ve made my day!
It's interesting to me that around me in Appalachia, churches (predominantly white, if that's relevant) sit separated by the part they're singing, around a central leader. As a result only one person gets to hear the full experience of the music. This arrangement lets anyone in the audience hear it, but as a tradeoff the different parts aren't as focused as the voices mingle more.
This brought back great memories of thee Note Singing Conventon back in the day. Thank you for sharing. Where can i get these books? I would love to teach my grandkids

This is like going to a Baptist Church service. Uplifting, fingers snapping and feet tapping. Thank you to the person who made this available.
I remember going to these with my great grandmother when I was a little girl back in Georgia. Sweet memories that I will never forget.
I remember hearing Mama sing like this and thought she was singing in another language. This is the way she learned new songs. Amazing!!
