So well done! Quiet and serene with sublime landscapes. The juxtaposition of the gardens and high-rise buildings is perfect. I will add, my favorite is the branching pine atop the stone wall at time marker 5:53 . Interesting to see the weathering of the blocks below the tree is separate from the others.
I did business in Japan for 25 years and often stayed in a hotel a few blocks from the Palace . One of my great regrets from those days was the little time I had to see the Royal grounds. Thanks for sharing your experience !!
Welcome to Japan, I'm doing some large format photography here, and have benefitted from your instructional videos. There is an 8x10 club here in Japan. Also a an Ebony (camera) club. A number of people doing plates and alternative processes. This is a great season to travel here.
Thank you. I find the whole Japanese photography scene very exciting, I went to some great galleries and amazing book stores while in Tokyo. I am coming back soon.
You're getting some nice tonality out of that T-Max 400. I tend to see the fun contrasts and miss the tonality. Thanks for the lesson! And thanks for the encouragement to get out with my '53 'flex or '83 'blad more.
I like these kind of images very much which show the tranquility in black and white. I like the Rolleiflex too. I myself have one. You did you not use your spotmeter which is interesting. Please tell me the reason why not using it. Kind regards from Sweden
Thank you. Although I did have a spot meter with me, when I was in Japan is was mostly overcast, so one meter reading and I knew the exposure. If I had greys in the frame I knew at that exposure they would be grey. I also have so much experience and know how I develop film, that in certain scenes if I underexposed by a stop I knew I could darken parts of the photo up. I also gave the film a bit more development to try and bump the contrast on this grey day. So I just didn't have a huge variety in light, pretty much one exposure reading and I was set for the day.
No problems, I asked for hand checked all the time and it was no problem. But, keep your film out of any packaging and in a clear plastic ziplock bag, make it easy for them.
It’s a lovely place. I wish I had been back into photography when I visited Tokyo. Did you take any shots of caretakers sweeping the walkways with brooms made of branches?
Oh, how I love and miss shooting with my Rolleiflex. I still have it, but after we lost our processor here in town, I now have to send out all of my film to be developed. Developing myself is possible, but not the cost. Due to this I can't afford to shoot medium AND large format as much as I wish I could.
Actually developing your film should be a lot cheaper than sending it out, and you only need a few things to do that. Hmmm, maybe I should make a UA-cam film about that. ;-)
Thanks Todd! Do you have any tips for traveling internationally with film? In my most recent trip to Europe I concluded it just wasn’t feasible any longer. Security at Heathrow absolutely refused to hand check my 10 rolls of T-Max and that was the end of my film for the entire trip.
From everything I've heard, and I have been there as well, Heathrow is terrible for any kind of film. I had no issues in Japan and in Asia, except one x-ray check in Vietnam. I just have all of my film out of their containers or packages and in a clear plastic bag ready for them, right now here in North America and in Asia they are still good about it. They have to swab the film though.
Stunning pictures Todd! Really beautiful. May I ask you a technical question? Do you have used any filter on your camera? (It looks like you have not.) Could you share some of your reasoning why or why not?
Thank you. I sometimes use a filter, but that day I did not, when actually a yellow filter would have helped out. Honestly, I think I forgot my yellow filter in the hotel room. (blush)
Uhh, this was weird - when I started the video I automatically got a German speaking AI voice as overdub, scary! Changed back to the original, much better. Didn’t know YT is doing that… nice video anyway.
Well I think Tmax developer is great for Tmax films, but I really like D76 for Tri-x and HP5 type of films. I was using just Xtol developers for all of my films, I really like that developer, and it works great for all films, right now I can't get it in Canada.
What is the point of shooting film these days ?. I shot film on a Hasselblad and Leica m6, did all my own processing. Even had a densitometer, film base plus fog !. It’s far better to use digital.
Then use digital. But I still love the look of film, I can still make silver prints using film, I think more about the photo when I am using film. The point is use what makes you happy making photos, and if that's digital for you, great. I shoot a lot of digital myself. There are no absolutes one way is better than the other, they are just different.

Beautiful images. And the video of the surrounding was nice.
Thanks so much, I will tell my video photographer!
What a wonderful experience this must have been ! your images do capture the tranquility. zen billings

My pleasure, if you ever go back it's worth a trip there to spend 1/2 a day.
Thank ❤you Todd for this wonderful video. Love your Rollei work and please keep it up. Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Thank you for the kind note, Merry Christmas as well. ;-)
That was beautiful. There are parts of Japan that I have longed to see. This is one of them.
@@BR-uz9nj You should go, Japan is simply amazing. ✌️
I’m a long time subscriber from Japan. Glad you are enjoying Japan! Imperial palace is beautiful and so quiet at the same time. 😊
@@wichersham We are absolutely loving Japan. Really such a wonderful place. Thanks for watching.

I used to stay at the Imperial Hotel across the street in the early 80’s on business ….no camera then…too busy! Great pictures…be safe..Cheers..
That is a really great hotel, I know exactly where that is, maybe next time. ;-)
@ Those were my days of corporate America, all paid! I stayed at the tower high enough to see the Palace gardens…
Nice music
@@navegantezen5983 Glad you liked it.
Did you have a private tour?😊
@@macolive65 Unfortunately I did not, but it was still great to roam around. 😉
@ I was there last month and I got on the walking tour….too many people. I think your stroll was better.
@ We we’re early, as in first ones in the gate and not a lot of people yet.

I am going to have a stay in Japan. Have you had any problems with scanning the films at the airport, did you ask for handcheck ?
Great video !

what messenger bag are you using I like it has a water bottle pocket and the sizer isn't too ig
It is the Wotencraft 7litre.

I did not they were not out when we were there. But in another garden in Hiroshima I did get that.

@toddkorolphoto Thank you very much for the information.

Indeed!😉
Nice place to be, much less photograph.
@@steveh1273 Indeed, just walking the grounds is magical.
I love TMAX but it is expensive and scheduled to be about 20% more expensive in 2025. I think I will be moving totally to Illford Delta.
Sadly it is, like most films now.
My Sony A7ii can do all that. Well.....except use film obviously
;-))
The video is translated with an AI voice. Just saw 30 seconds and i cant take it. Love your work. Sorry.
Well that sucks, sorry, not sure why or how that is happening...
I just fixed it, of course it's an automatic thing unless you change it.
