Had a nail in my 2023 BMW X3 within the tread and Discount Tire would not repair it and quoted me $327.00 + taxes and fees for a new one. Took it to Walmart to see what they would do. 30 minutes/$15.00 later, my tire was patched properly from the inside, and everything is still great 4 months later.

Quick update - 3 years later and the tire is still great. Pretty soon I will get new ones due to wear, we don't drive very much anyway but the plug has not been an issue. As always, read the disclaimer and be very careful to know the range of viability for this approach before attempting it.
We got a screw in our Run Flat. Luckily, we were only less than a mile from home. Was difficult to plug, but was successful. We monitor the tire pressure everytime we go out. We have a 2017 MINI Countryman S ALL4. So far, it's holding up. We'll eventually get new Run Flats again when the time comes.
@buzz_chill, what manufacturer made the tire? Is the patch still holding up a month later? (We have a 2016 Countryman S ALL4 with a screw in the tire.)

I did a similar plug repair on the BMW that my wife used to own... It was a royal pain in the ass to get the rasp tool to go into the run-flat tire... More so than any other tire I've ever plugged...
Ever notice that new tires seem to attract nails and screws significantly more than old tires? Brand new car and the nails and screws are basically jumping out of the ditches to get on the road in front of your tires... If the tires are worn down to the wear stripes, the nails and screws won't even come near your tires...
I ran over a 1/2" bolt in my Jeep a couple of years ago... Punched out a nice 1/2" hole in the tire and deflated quite quickly... Definitely NOT something that I was going to try to plug / patch...
some experience tips, it will be so much easier to put the plug in the tire if you pump more air into the tire before you plug it.

Awesome, I have a screw in my Continental RFT on my bimmer. although it says they are a no-go on the chart, I wonder if that's just the manuf trying to get more sales? Will try it anyway.

I had a puncture repaired on my Pirelli run flat and after a few months I noticed a huge bulge on the sidewall. Turns out a puncture that close to the edge should not be repaired because it weakens the structure. Be very careful doing this. From what I read you should only plug punctures within the middle 60% of the tire width. I may have allowed it to dip below 15 psi as well which also destroys the run flat structure.
Yes this also goes for non run flats. If you let the pressure get too low you are destroying the structure of the rubber & tire. At that point you’ve weakened the tire to the point of danger.
I agree don’t try to plug a hole that close to the shoulder. I just got a screw in my MB run flat tire, in the center third of the tread, and a nationwide tire shop was OK with plugging it. I never got the pressure below 30 psi, while driving on it.

Was thinking of fitting run flats on my electric leaf car. Do you think they are less efficient and what weight can they carry and what's the max pressure they can take?
Every tire has a different Max Load Rating, and rolling resistance as well. As someone who just experienced a flat on a brand new car with runflat tires, I can't fathom someone buying them voluntarily. The dealership wanted $510 to replace the tire because of one little screw. I thanked them, went home and plugged the sonovabitch like I've done on every other car and never had a problem. I do NOT recommend runflats for any reason. It's always easier to just carry a plug kit and mini compressor and get yourself back on the road in 10 mins.
If you have a daughter or a wife that you don’t want broken down on the side of a road at the mercy of every sleazy bag and weirdo that may be passing by and happy to stop and “help” if my gal gets a flat she can drive 50 miles to safety. I Love runflats. I also just recently learned they can be plugged. I wish I knew this 3 runflats ago that could have all been plugged. We drive Mini Coppers and there is no room for a spare. That is why some cars roll runflats. Nice video. Thank You Sir

@@brantzmyers5410 nice! I thought so. I just did a plug job near the sidewall on my run flat like yours. Tires only have 7k on them. Hoping the plug job holds up until I need new tires. Fingers crossed 🤞. Was thinking the thicker sidewalls it would be fine. Plus I have winter tires. So I'm just gonna burn through them. Get regular tires and a mini air compressor to carry around with a plug kit. And hopefully never look back.

@@reinoldg it worked out fine. But after a few hundred miles. I decided to get a new tire being the other 3 only had a few thousand miles on them. Found a good deal on a new tire. Same exact one. For like 135 bucks. So I bought it put it on. Everything is good now. Didn't want a plug in a tire on such a powerful car. That easily gos over 100 mph. I saved the plugged tire. I think it would have worked just fine. But being it's my wife's car. I wanted her to be completely safe. Would of worked just fine driving around town. But didn't fully trust it at high speeds. You never know.

@@pecv4776 -- I doubt it is actually "illegal"... Tire shops will most likely not do it because they cannot guarantee the repair lasting and for liability issues... That's a lot different than 'illegal"... Besides, if they tell you that they can't repair a hole that close to the edge and you will need to replace the tire, they stand to make more money...

The DOT mainly regulates commercial vehicles... Although they *could* make a regulation that specified the types of tire patches that are allowed, it would only apply to commercial vehicles or tire shops, not private individuals...
@@pecv4776 It might be "illegal" where you are, but not where I am. Over 2 years later and all is great with that tire - ZERO problems. Did you actually watch and listen to the whole video, read the official guidance from Bridgestone that I showed, saying what I did was ok by them, and read the DISCLAIMER?

Nah plugs can hold on the shoulder if done properly but definitely way too close to the side to do an actual patch as it would just lift off the liner and cause a blow out while if the plug didn't end up holding it would just slowly leak over time

The tape markers were not really necessary.
I guess so - I was afraid it would seal up and disappear after I pulled out that screw, but it was still easy enough to see. It might have been helpful for the viewers a bit though...

I’ll say work smart, not hard. Like @Brantz said it hold up well even after 2 years the fact the hole was also at the very edge. Dangerous?? perhaps! But after 2 years maybe this time it’s reaching the end of life of the tire. But the point is, gotta do what you gotta do, money for your buck! Probably only cost $10 for that repair because no Tire shop will repair that still new tire. All of them for sure advise you to buy new one. Business and safety I get it.
But I would do the same, I’ll try to patch first, if it didn’t work that’s the time to buy new one. Just my 2cents.

Taking an RFT tire off a rim is notan easy task, many tire repair shops dont have the necessary tools. I had my brand new Pirelli tires installed iat a PepBoys shop and the crew there struggled.
