I managed to keep the tears at bay this time. Helped, perhaps, by the pauses but usually at least one of the "Papa"s chokes me up and then I'm crying at "Papa how I miss you kissing me good night". But then I get all excited and smiling "back" at her during A Little Piece of Sky. She is remarkable.

Back when I was young, I never really connected with Streisand's performance of this. But the first time I heard this version, I damn near burst into tears (which is unexpected for me.) A lot of that is just more life lived, but there's always something about Fabian (her timbre, performance skills, authenticity)...

    • @stephanieellis5399

Right? I like Streisand but she never quite wrings my emotions the same way. I cried pretty much through the entire piece the first time I heard it. I'll still cry at certain points. And like you, I'm not a crier.

She sang this at the END of the concert? Holy moly! That's insane! To sing it fresh is difficult but to sing it after an entire concert, like what? 2 hour?, is mind blowing! Even totally seasoned performers are really spent by then. Her endurance is astonishing!

Yes, her papa was there that night and can you imagine his pride because he believed so deeply in his daughter to give her wings as a teen to dream big!! He was a chimney sweep who played guitar and taught her to love music as a child.

    • @stephanieellis5399
      @stephanieellis5399 2 роки тому +2

Oooh. I knew that he played guitar and sang and that they also, as I heard her say, lived quite humbly. They invested so much in her. They bought her a piano. The lessons for voice and piano at the Conservatory wouldn't have been free. The cost of entering competitions and travel. And then this huge gift of their life savings.
One thing is for sure, she would have known, without question, how much her parents loved her.

Songs like these are ideal for the type of voice Fabian has. Remember watching Yentl in a cinema here in Hamburg, nearly 40 years ago.. Impressive movie - with the inevitable shortcomings compared to Singer`s story, but Michel Legrand`s music made it real good. He was a jazz piano player too. Sadly passed recently, gone like all the great movie composers.

I remember when I first heard Lara's voice -- and especially this performance. I was living in France at the time, and I called my mother (a huge Streisand fan) and said, "You won't believe it, but I've heard the next Barbra Streisand." That was 1999 - before youtube. A lot has happened since then. I'm so glad to hear so much of the world loving her right now. Her power, range, fragility, strength...and the emotional response she invokes are truly amazing.

I know the score of the movie Yentle sung by Barbra inside and out. If I’m not mistaken Barbra wrote a lot of the songs herself, fantastic movie by the way, but to do these songs live is quite a feat. What an amazing performance by Lara. Also, love Shel Silverstein. Read his books to my kids when they were young many, many times.

I had the chance to see this show also in Quebec. I still remember it. This performance is out of the ordinary. I still remember very well what she said. That when she saw this film, "Yentl", she said to herself: "One day, I will sing his songs". There it's done. And I really like Barbra Streisand and I've listened to this movie more than once, but Lara's performance is beyond words. In particular, "A piece of sky" is so moving in truth! This is great art!

Matthew, Matthew...I feel like a fool! I have read female singers being ranked over each other in the past. I seen the name, Lara Fabian, never heard of her and couldn't understand why she was ranked so high. Then, in the last 3-4 years after finding the Master of Voice, Dimash, her name would come up, then she sang with Dimash, and again I thought what is so great about Lara Fabian. But, thanks to you, and this video and because I am a long time huge fan of "Babs" and saw Yentl mentioned, I had to watch it. Well, Lara Fabian here had my chin drop to the floor! I never thought another woman could sing anything that Barbra had sung and sing better. This performance was one of the Best (not better than the Man Dimash)...lol, but, WOW, she blew the roof off that place...and covered the stage. Thanks you for posting it!!!!!

I first heard it 26 years ago and I'm her devoted fan since. This is the greatest rendition Lara ever did, it has English subtitles and it will show you how much Dimash was influenced by Lara's way of performing a song. Enjoy!

    • @snoflysse8844
      @snoflysse8844 3 роки тому

@@bernardachour614 I understand that Dimash's style is not for everyone Sir, but it takes years of intensive training for those "muscles" to be able to make those sounds that you are referring to and even that is no guarantee to make it work. It needs insane talent. Do you know that Dimash is an actual trained opera singer, but chose his own path instead? His shows are flashy and obviously over dramatic at times and maybe to some people it's a "circus", but his level of singing is beyond anything that I've ever heard in my life. So, I think Sir, that at the minimum Dimash deserves respect.

@@bernardachour614Sir, I meant no offense, so there's no need for your hostility. Nobody suggested that you have to like him. Just to clarify things even further, I'm not a Dimash Dear. I'm a life long Lara Fan. I'm over 50 and my taste in music is very far from what Dimash does, but as a trained singer I felt things needed to be said. For example, I don't like Celine. I find her high notes shrill and irritating, she uses a nasal tone that's been setting my teeth on edge for decades and she has no low register to worth a damn in my opinion. Of course if you are a Celine Fan, I just managed to offend you big time, but please believe me, still, as a singer I truly respect her. I even sing along with a couple of her hits when it comes up on the radio. Respect is not a routine, it's a privilege, something to be earned from ones' peers...like Lara, like Andrea Bocelli and Maestro Igor Krutoy.

"Bravissimo" to Barbra Streisand, Lara Fabian and Michel Legrand, three beautiful and extraordinary talented artists of our time. Wow ! Barbra lost her father very early.
« Her father, Emmanuel Streisand, the son of an immigrant fishmonger, was a teacher at a Brooklyn high school. Strong, athletic, and scholarly, his energy would fill their apartment every night when he came home. But, when Barbra was only 15 months old, she lost him. He was only 35. » Barbra told PEOPLE.

For the difference between this version with the original, I believe that Lara Fabian was influenced by the version of the duet by Michel Legrand , the original composer/song writer , with Ginette Reno at the Montréal Jazz Festival in 1986. Unfortunately the conversion from the video file to digital have butchered the synchronisation but you still can find it at : ua-cam.com/video/qhgSVrOwVWM/v-deo.html .
And if you like song about father who bring tears, maybe you can be interrested by the song "Le plus fort , c'est mon père" by Lynda Lemay , another french-canadian songwriter/singer . ua-cam.com/video/zrXsHDO2DOE/v-deo.html . The lyrics are fabulous.
    Lyrics.
    how did you do mom
    To know that daddy
    Good weather and bad weather
    He wouldn't go
Were you sure, or did you not know
    Are tears to be expected?
    How did you do, mom
    To find the right guy
    How did you know him
    why did you like it
Was there just one in all this century?
And you happen to be sleeping with it
    How could you find
A man who is not afraid
    Who promises without trembling
Who loves with all his heart
I said it a long time ago
But not in the same way
    You're lucky, mom
    The strongest is my father
    how come mom
    That in my life
    With so many lovers
    With so many choices
I haven't found a man like him yet
Able to be friend, father and husband
    how did you do mom
To open your heart to him
    Without him running away
    With your best
    Are there any magic words
What did you say without realizing?
So explain to me what I should say
    How could you find
A man who is not afraid
    Who promises without trembling
Who loves with all his heart
I said it a long time ago
But not in the same way
    You're lucky, mom
    The strongest is my father
And when I seem to like them
    men change their outlook
If I dare to attach myself
    They start to resent me
If I talk about the future
    They are already far behind
I was right to say it
    The strongest is my father
    will you tell me mom
    How could you know
    From the beginning
    That he wasn't a coward?
That he wasn't going to run away
And that he was going to do everything
    so i can say
    The strongest is my father
What effect did it have on you
    When you met him
    Did it seem
That he was going to love you so much?
    Men often
    look amazing
    But tell yourself well mom
That the strongest is my father
