I was there on May 27th at 715pm when it went off for the 7th time this year, so happy I got to be there, it's very impressive and powerful. Thanks Steamboat! It shot a solid 200 feet in the air, way more impressive than old faithful. The steam rains down on you grey mineral water, it was epic to be showered on by this geyser.
This is the luckiest group of people ever... Holy hell what I wouldn't give to have been there for a Steamboat eruption! I'm pretty sure my Geyser watching good luck ran out after I caught an eruption of Giant Geyser in the Upper Basin.
Steamboat has been erupting so frequently this year that there is good chance the eruptions will be witnessed and recorded. Until this year the last one seen was in 2014. None were seen between 2007-2013. Naturally this doesn't mean that none occurred as the eruption could have happened at night when there were no visitors. Right now if one was willing to show up at the basin everyday during daylight hours there is a good chance you will witness an eruption.
Filming a geyser is the only time where filming in vertical mode is the preferred method.
ha ha
The emotions from the crowd truly express what an awesome and uncommon even this is. Lucky people!

Hi Ryan, I've also got a video of start and water phase of the May 27th eruption if you want to check it out: ua-cam.com/video/1C9bqz_dX78/v-deo.html

There has been a data logger on Steamboat for some time so it's not likely that one was missed between 2007-2013.
They monitor seismic activity everywhere at Yellowstone including Steamboat. It's not possible they missed an eruption.
