To karen this song isn't a Northumberland song that was sung by a man from hexham, your right about the date but it was sung by a man in newcastle who misses his girlfriend who lived in Gateshead and at that time ther was no bridges to cross and ther was a little man on a rickety wooden boat who would ferry people to the other side of the tyne. He sung the song as he waited in the rain on a stormy night as he waited for the boatman to take him to his bonny hinny.
+Karen2024 I agree with you karen that we all like to claim a bit of the tyne but what annoys me most is that people south of the water, washington' hebburn, even Durham all claim to be geordies but don't even know we're the term "geordie" comes from. it comes from 1745 during the Scottish rebellion and the rebels were called jacabites and they invaded newcastle as they wanted it as part of Scotland and at that time king George the 2nd wasn't on the throne and wasn't popular at all, but the people of newcastle city that means from tynemouth to the city centre was very fond of him and when the jacabites invaded he sent a telegram out to every town in the north east asking for ther help to defeat the rebels and not 1 town wanted to know. 1500 rebels turned up to fight and 300 people from newcastle fought them and won. therfore we became known as geordies men hence the word geordie. but at this time newcastle was called monkchester so king George built a castle to watch the border for invading Scots and the city became known as "Newcastle". it just annoys me that every town in the north east calls themselfs geordies wen realy ther not. people south of the river are called south tynesiders not geordies.
