For 14 years, Nokia was the king of telecom. That may be a surprise to you, considering their market share is now a mere fraction of what it used to be.
In this video, we'll explore how the Finnish tech giant grew from a conglomerate that once made paper and rubber products to inventing disruptive tech like the 1G/2G cellular network (which made SMS text messaging possible!).

Ok bro
This just shows how running a business in an age where technology is developing at a rapid pace requires constant innovation.
Stock is a great buy at the current price Nokia still operates a profitable company. In 2021 they even will probably pay divedens.
True but that is really difficult tbh.
Unfortunately, innovation actually also contributed to Nokia's downfall. It isn't mentioned in the video, but one of the big mistakes Nokia made was not adopting Android. They were focusing on their own operating system; two of them in fact, being developed in tandem. They sunk almost $5 billion in R&D into their own OS and it never took off. By the time they switched to leveraging Android, Samsung and HTC had filled the gap.
@@Diomedes01 thanks for the insight. I was not aware of that. You learn new things every day.
the wrong CEO at the right time!
Stephen Elop was a trojan horse sent by Microsoft
@@randomly_random_0 Yes!
Nokia biggest down fall was staying with Symbian os for to long then choosing Microsoft instead of android
They should have made their own, android was made after apple launched IOS.
No one knew that Windows Phone would suffer the fate it did. Especially with the success of Windows Mobile before.
@@iriemonmon actually, it did. Windows phone 8 was Dead on Arrival. Android already taking off in cheap phone market, and not a single phone maker choosing windows phone in major market such as US, Europe, China, and India. The majority of reason why Nokia choosing WP instead of Android is the CEO of Nokia at that time were ex-Microsoft and still had major stakes in Microsoft, while also good friend of Steve Ballmer (CEO of Microsoft at that time).
@@iwrotethis4712 The sad part is...they did. It was called MeeGo and it was beautiful. Look up the Nokia N9
@@iwrotethis4712 they did but it was too late

You can't tell me their strategy teams didn't see multi-touch on the horizon. just like Kodak, they chose to underestimate the level of threat it posed. Great video.
I think you are right. Like Kodak they knew what was coming. They just didn't take it seriously enough.
The video glossed over many important details that contributed to the downfall like bad company culture and structure, which resulted in several factions and teams inside the company competing against each other instead of working together. There was no singular vision
@@me_too_thanks5062 true. Good points.
It is easy in hindsight to see or understand what should have been done, for if it was not hard so many companies would not screw up

us too
Nokia could be very successful today if it gone with android os but the wrong dicision of Stephen Elop, going with Microsoft made them fail badly..
Nokia smartphones are being produced under 'HMD Global' which runs clean version of android with direct updates from Google. I own the Nokia 8.1, which was released last year. Great phone!

That's why they should use android from the start.

Legend has it the there is still battery in the Nokia 1100 after it was last charged in 2005😁
As someone who once upon a time worked at Bell Labs I'd be very interested in seeing more on the last 10 years or so of Nokia.
Lucent "Merged" with Alcatel to create Alcatel-Lucent and then with Nokia to create .... Nokia, they must have done something right.
I have now watched all your videos in this Business Casual Series.

@Cyberdial company named HMD global , and most of the employees are people behind the old nokia . Nokia 7 plus user here ✌️
Dread Me too
Lol, that's NOT a nokia phone you're holding dummy. It just has the name on it. Fool.
But their software is bad not a like real nokia
@@farthurf.5221 Nokia phones isn't all about software. Back in the days, the Symbian OS wasn't the best. It is just the most popular like Android today, and a good ecosystem. What really makes people buy Nokia is its quality and longevity.
Nokia is the Kodak of mobile phones. Kodak didn't move up well towards digital cameras and nokia felt down when android phones started booming. I miss them so much i remember the battery could go 6-7 days without charging.
finally nokia,was waitin for it..
I thought they were going to mention when they got bought out by Microsoft and the Nokia windows phones became a thing. That was also a failure by most standards.
Yes. Why did they stop the story short? Why no mention of Microsoft?
They didn't get bought out by Microsoft! Where are you guys getting this from? Microsoft bought Nokia's Windows Devices division so they could produce Windows Phone in-house. Nokia is still free standing and making Android phones
theres another video on the channel covering that situation
@@iriemonmon actually, Microsoft Buys the entirety of Mobile Division of Nokia, then also buys the rights to Nokia Brands in Mobile Market (Nokia does still exist in networking market and Consultation). But then ex-Nokia Mobile securing funds from Chinese Investors and Creating new Company called HMD Global (which is NOT Nokia that Microsoft didn't buy) then buying back the rights to Nokia Branding for Mobile Market and creating Nokia phones with Android in it. So the Android Phone Nokia is NOT made by Nokia themselves, but by HMD Global
My first phone ever was a Nokia...wow, the memories... Thanks for the video...I have subscribed
Finally a video from you
That was fantastic History. Learnt a lot.
Thank you!
I remember back to 2010, Nokia was still selling those traditional phones with only basic internet function. Then from 2011 onwards everyone was crazy about tablets and smartphones and put Nokia behind.
The same happened with Blockbuster. Netflix had a market of renting DVD's and wanted Blockbuster to buy them. The CEO of Blockbuster laughed at the notion that consumers would be willing to stream movies at home and that was their downfall, and also when they refused to innovate to the changing of faster broadband for streaming themselves.
Didn't really discuss the downfall of the company. IIRC there was an internal power struggle between Symbian OS and MeeGo OS developers within the company. So instead of working together to achieve their goals there was an unhealthy competition within the company and ultimately nothing fruitful came out of it.
I must’ve gone through every “communicator” model Nokia built. Until I met BlackBerry. And then - the ultimate iPhone. But I didn’t get into that until the iPhone 4 came out.
Sorry but the Nokia Cityman is not the official name.
It's called the Zack Morris phone
.
And it's TRASHHH!

watching this on my nokia 8.1 ... beast of a fone n so well made with beautiful back glass design.
Nokia has made quite a grand comeback in Europe and India over the past two years, with HMD behind the wheel.
However, they are far from what the company once was, especially since they practically pulled out of the American and Chinese markets.
watching the video reminds me of my first mobile phone ♥️
I wish you had detailed more about the rush to release S60v5 so they could try to keep up with the i-phone, and how this OS combined with the N97 huge market gave them a bad reputation cause it wasn't good at all, up until the point when they finally released Symbian ^3 and had a great OS in hands but no market share to be relevant anymore.
The brought the PureView technology too ... My Lumia 950 still rocks with it.
Great videos
Finland is also known for its womderful education system and for Supercell
Though supercell belongs to the Chinese.
Supercell is now partially owned by a chinese company, but I still agree.
Rovio (Angry Birds) is also Finnish
Fortydroid Angry birds is pretty dead sadly, still a great game

Snake first appeared on Nokia phones with the 6110 model. The 2100 series had two-line text display.
Those good memories when I used my mom's old Nokia phone, my dad's old Nokia phone and 2 Ericsson phones (I forgot the model kind though) and those ringtones were amusing but nowadays we have Samsung phones while my sister has iPhone. I can't believe that my mom's Nokia phone survived for years until now but she stopped using it months ago this year, she would use it as an alarm but now Samsung J7 as time went by.
" today apple is going to reinvents the phone " this words stuck in my head since 2007
I still have my Nokia. With the see thru custom case with a sun motif and the light up antenna. 🤣 . Big pimpin back in the day. 😎
Awesome! Make a video on Alibaba.
Nokia became obsolete when mobile phone became a mobile "computer" phone
Your a 'smart' phone.
Nokia was already on its way down before the launch of the iPhone, companies like blackberry and samsung were responsible for most of the early losses, people didn't just ditch Nokia and go straight for an iPhone. That would have been evident if he'd shown charts of Nokia's revenue before 2008.
Its declining in sales but still profitable lets get that straight. Nokia was BURIED when iphone was released, not quickly because people are still hesitant about a new product but realized after that nokia was a dinosaur company because of their operating software. They also failed because instead of using android as an OS they went with windows.
I was an ovi store app developer and my company went down when Nokia stopped supporting Ovistore.
The Grandfather who paved way for many, whose story is widely forgotten by the masses
Hi! I believe the first ever snake game was featured in Nokia 6110 launched in 1997. I have a few references but still not sure if it really is. Anyway thank you so much for this video, it's been really helpful for my research! :)
6:43 answer why Nokia fell from glory

Yeah, I think so xD
It was Nokia message tone....also used today in Nokia android
The legendary Nokia 1100, blue color!
My grandparents used that old Nokia Phone
And when I was a kid My Mother used that.
It was a nice and Amazing Phone.
I still remember when Steve Jobs introduced the I phone. It was so odd back then. A phone with no buttons
You mean 'physical keyboard' as iPhone back then had a giant home button along with some on its sides
But iPhone has button
@@Ucuz_
As in when you wanted to dial a number there were physical buttons from 0 to 9. But in I phone that wasn't the case.
Bitter irony as Nokia engineers presented Jobs the idea.
@@omarfarique6304 you should probably check Steve Ballmer's (Microsoft's CEO at the time) reaction to the launch of iPhone. The guy was so short-sighted that he predicted that iPhone would fail miserably due to its price and lack of physical keyboard.
I definitely owned like 3 of the Nokia phones...I always wondered what happened to them...
Thank you for a wonderfully informative video.
I had that type of phone from 08 uptill last year mine was a 3312 model only upgraded to a modern mobile phone in 2016

The mythological king of telecommunications
Nokia Fubatobi was one of the most intelligent people who had ever lived. He was smart, brilliant, powerful, and shag. In 1956 he became the most flamboyant man in the world. He was bullish, peevish, and snarky. Then he fell from grace and entered a recession. He said: Onnomatoyamitoyamayakainyasha
before Apple;s iPhone came into existence, Nokia faced tough competition from Blackberry. the free Instant Messaging service BBM made SMS obsolete and the shift from Nokia began.
But Blackberry phones had 2 major weakness that made their dominance short-lived: short longevity of the products (the phone broke down after 1-2 years of use), and the BBM ID number were prone to be dysfunctional after a short while, making the users had to renew the BBM number frequently.

In February 2017, the firm started a class action against BlackBerry on behalf of a group of employees. Nelligan O’Brien Payne employment lawyers Janice Payne, Andrew Reinholdt and Karine Dion are working on the action.
The dispute concerns over 300 employees across Canada who were transferred from BlackBerry to a business partner, and effectively terminated from BlackBerry. However, BlackBerry has stated that it will not pay employees any of the statutory, common law, and/or contractual entitlements they are owed for the termination. We are seeking damages for the plaintiffs for minimum provincial statutory entitlements on termination, contractual entitlements on termination, and/or common law entitlements on termination. We are also asking for bad faith and punitive damages, as well as costs.
We are currently in the very early stages of this action, but stayed tuned for further developments!
