This is one of the jankiest and most obscure ideas for an escape I've ever seen. In other words, the writers perfectly understood D&D problem-solving
Exept their idea was the worst because gelatonus cube have parasitic touch
Once inside they cannot move or transform
@@whiteeye3453that's not what parasitic means.
@@coachmatt6735 sorry I meant paralistic touch
@@coachmatt6735 Paralytic?
@@whiteeye3453 do they have that in all editions? i think that might've been removed from 4e onwards
Man I can just feel the DM facepalming when they randomly decide to skip the rest of the dungeon they made
This!
Well, it just imposes another set of challenges. If the maze walls are not contiguous, then there is a possibility for the characters to be trapped at the end of a passage when the next set of pillars come crashing down. So high-risk for the characters, but the reward . . .
1:21 I love this plan because I can very vividly imagine Doric's player asking the DM, "If someone is inside a gelatinous cube and then shrinks, does the cube INSTANTLY reform around their smaller size, or does it take some time?" And the DM thinking about it and maybe checking if the book says anything 😂 And also trying to decide if Doric would even know, maybe asking her player to roll a Nature check or something. I can see it!
I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw it, and the player putting the DM in the situation: If you don't let me do it you'll have to do a TPK
I think I can do you one even better: You know how earlier when Doric pulls her arm out of the cube and SEES that it reforms very slowly (thus giving her the idea)? Imagine if that was just something the DM was describing for flavor at the time, but then Doric's player brings it back when she tries her plan and the DM has to go 'Wait, I already established that, didn't it?' XD
An evil DM would just say that Doric immediately takes damage and reverts back into a halfling.
Or, force her to do several strengths checks which she's bad at, when trying to pull her friends out.
Or maybe instead of a tiny snake, she'll just get wildshape into a large creature to push everyone out of the cube.
Such a smart script by someone that really does understand D&D - but knows what works on the big screen. I will say the shapeshifter in this movie is far better than any in D&D - but it has to be that level. Now maybe whoever did this can give some assistance whenever they do the TEEN TITANS movie for Beast Boy.
My headcannon is that she's a homebrew. Where she has much much better wildshape abilities but loses access to any other spells that druids can normally use.
@@Somerandom1922 they all are, they follow monster sheet logic, instead of a player's character sheet
She’s a moon Druid they prioritize shifting. she has more opportunities to shift into wild shape and can act faster than any other Druid type after shifting
A Moon Druid only gets a few shifts a day, she shifted like 10 times during the escape scene@@Xxsorafan
@@Somerandom1922 That's my headcanon too, she traded her spellcasting feature for unlimited wild shape.
Side note, I love the cameo of the party from that D&D show in the 90s and that party seemed nice to their competitors of this new party. "You found the cage, come to safety with us". I hope they survived
They probably did, they dealt with Tiamat first session lol
They probably did, they dealt with Tiamat first session lol
They did survive because we know how an episode of the old DnD worked.
They get a cryptic hint from either dungeon master, or these protagonists, and they figure it out just in time to save the day and themselves if necessary.
The red smoke poured directly onto them. They're almost certainly dead
@@oliverpearce2338nah they can't be dead

Wow, how did this movie not hit it big time. Both scenes with the gelatinous cube are perfect. I know they hit other aspects extremely well, but damn, so happy to see cube in a live adaptation and done well lore wise.
There were next to zero promotion.
Not a single poster at a cinema.
I even have not heard of it until pieces of it started appearing on youtube.
It did hit it big time, what?
Woke ruined it
@@nibrasge6375 woke? o_O
What was woke about this movie?
@@Shmandalf it flopped big time.
Well at least in cinema ticket sales.
Which is a mystery why it happened, since this movie is amazingly good.
I love the fact that the other team of adventurers are the original characters from the DND cartoon show back in the 80s.
I love how the original team is so kind! They cheer when our heroes find the cage and beckon them to hurry and join so they'll all be safe together. They even say 'No, come back!' when they run away. Just a sweet little detail and tribute
I saw this at the cinema around 2 weeks after it came out with a few of my friends. As someone who has never played Dungeons and Dragons, the movie was actually very interesting, and had a good plot.
Also a non-D&D-player, what I think made this movie so good is that it's bound by the rules that makes D&D playable, and the characters act like players. So many movies - especially of the fantasy adventure sort - have the plot dictate everything. Magic's capabilities and limitations are whatever the plot needs at any given moment, while in this movie it has very clearly defined capabilities and limitations, as it would need to for gameplay to be possible. In other movies, often characters do things that don't make any sense, don't utilize the capabilities they have, don't take an obvious solution, in order to drive the plot. In this, the characters always take the most sensible option and fully utilize what they have at their disposal - no moments where audiences wonder "Well why didn't they just..." because they just did. Thus I think this movie has far less plot-holes than we've come to expect, which is very refreshing.
Same here.
I geeked out when I saw that the dungeons and dragons cartoon team was there.
Ikr??? No one's mentioning it!
So that means Dungeon Master and Venger exist in this world.
Yeah cavalier costume and barbarian were on point!
Why didn't this do well? I enjoyed it. Seemed like such a love letter for D&D
Hasbro managed to burn a lot of good will with the fans during the OGL fiasco. That probably put a hurt on ticket sales from DnD players.
I will own this on Blu-Ray, but there are too many streaming services to sub to all of them, and I won't go to a theater anymore since I live in a predominantly anti-vaxxer area and Covid is NOT OVER. If the studios stopped trying to own all the profits, and put all their movies on one platform again, like Netflix started out, I'd pay a higher price for monthly sub, but I won't sub to all the studios independently. Screw their greed.
@@drakkondarkspell Same. I was all in for the movie experience but COVID killed it all for me. I'm over movie theaters as a whole now and I think many are as well now.
@@wil2197 Writers right before the movie coming out saying they intentionally emasculated men in the movie didn't help either.

I'm still so happy we got to see a Displacer Beast! My favourite monster in all of D&D

@@pauljordan0203 how many beasts did you see here?

@@pauljordan0203 As you saw, a really big panther-like cat with six legs and tentacles. In tabletop RPG its skin shifts light so that it always appears a few feet from where it actually is. This movie changes that to projecting an illusory duplicate, which IMO is easier for an audience to understand. Some bigger displacer beasts are nearly human in intelligence, and lead packs of their fellows.

such an underrated film, very well pasted action and humour
In the cage at 0:59, those are the kids from the 80's cartoon!
One thing about this scene that confused me was how was the crowd supposed to see what is happening in the maze?
Magic! The same screens that people were watching all over the city like a TV event.
There is a scrying orb above the maze so everyone can watch it, near the clock, I think
@@justnoob8141 Oh really? I missed that.
I was thinking the same. Perhaps it was mostly for the wealthy in the tower who placed bets and were able to watch through the dial on the table. It's a status thing.
I've been asking that question since Harry Potter 4.
I love the fact that, instead of english comment's, brazilians(like me) were just amazed by the fact that the character's from the 80's cartoon are in this movie.
9/10 coments in brazil be like: "meu Deus do céu, caverna do dragão!!!" "God almight, dungeons and dragons".
Yeah, in Brazil the cartoon had a diferent name. 'caverna do dragão' translates to dragon's cavern, not dungeon's and dragons. So, when someone talk's about caverna do dragão, we for sure know that it's the cartoon, that was a mark here in Brazil. My mother was a fan.

Whoa, are those the kids from the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon in that cage? Now that's a neat reference.
That guy should’ve watched where he was going before being eaten by the gelatinous cube
That's the whole point of the cube. If id didn't eat anyone yet, it's very hard to spot.
@@DoctorM42 isn't the gelatinous cube a slime?
@@DoctorM42 But still, the fact that Doric and Holga could see it and, presumably, recognize what it was should've given the half-giant an idea that there was something off.
Plus, it's not like the Cube was in a darkened dungeon where the only sign of its presence were pieces of armor or weapons floating in its mass. It looks like frosted glass in this scene.

I’m still laughing by that
I love this scene it's giving me maze runner vibes
just realized the people in the cage are an homage to the DND cartoon of the 80s.....wow that took me way too long! LOL!
okay, so the gelatinous cube in the maze, so what's the story of the black panther with tentacles on it's back?
It’s called a displacer beast. If I remember correctly it creates a type of illusion/mirage of its self that makes it difficult to target and hit in game, a lower middle threat to players (again if I remember correctly, I’ve only dabbled a little with DnD)

I adore black panthers, but not when they have those long spiky tentacles.
And especially when they cast illusory duplicates too well you can't tell which is real.
The fact that it looks like a panther explains how it sounds just like one.

Dungeons & Dragons
Paramount plus where is to watch movie
I think these characters from (DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES) movie, might of worked out better, if they were introduced last.
I also think the main group of characters, from the (DUNGEONS & DRAGONS) stories, should have been introduced first, and be the main stars for two movies.
Then later introduce their new allies, in the third installment, who are the characters from, the story of (DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES).
Why is the druid not able to pull her arm out but is able to pull the barbarian and her arm out?
And why that JC didn't damage them with is acid?
I believe in the rules, you need another person to pull you out of the cube, and it takes several rounds for a cube to melt you.
Must have failed a strength check earlier.
I think also that the anti magic bracelet was stuck, so that was holding her in place until the barbarian gave a hand pulling her arm out of the bracelet and leaving it behind,
Rule #0
She couldn't pull out her own hand but could pull out her friend?
She rolled high on a difficult strength check
I wish they had her transform into an owlbear for strength to pull them out. But oh well. Just a minor flaw.
One of the few flaws with an overall FANTASTIC D&D movie. Earlier, she couldn't even pull her own hand out of the cube... but now she can pull an entire person out. It'd make sense if she shifted to a stronger form to do it, but that's not the case.
Strength check - fail vs success. It's always a roll of the dice
I actually don’t think she was struggling with her hand, it was the magic dampening bracelet. If you notice in the scene, her hand only slips out rapidly after the bracelet is completely off, and it makes considering it’s not supposed to be able to be pulled off
@@GuidingOliveexactly
@@Chrjstheshadow Agree with this explanation - it was the bracelet that was stuck. Though this does bring up another plot hole (in a movie with far fewer than most): How did Simon eventually get his off? Which one was the one they eventually put on Sofina, Simon's or Doric's?

Edgin and his team are planning on to rescue A young girl Kira..
And then they save the city from being raised as undead.
So in other words a great evil was thwarted and the city was saved by a band of screwups. D&D in a nutshell.
As a game master I think writers played the game or at least listened to real d&d players in order to make the script because most of the decisions and actions made by characters are just like the ones made by players.

I called foul! Holga have to grab Doric out of the cube and yet Doric can pull Holga out by herself???? Did she rolled natural 20 on her strength check or something?
Leverage. Doric didn't have her feet under her when she was trapped, she was leaning forward.
Acctually thanks to them releassing the partys character sheets we know it is possible Doric has a Strength of 12 +1 pulling someone out of he cube is a DC 12 strength check so she would only have to roll an 11 or better
