  • Dokomi was a fantastically fun event to do. In the end of the video, I say I wouldn't be returning to Dokomi. BUT after much thought, I realized that while I think the show was poorly put together, the potential sales is there - and that I just priced myself out of competition in this show.
I didn't know anything about the spending behavior of the people here, and didn't know how valuable the Euro is (I literally know the exchange rate, but didn't know until after the show, how far something like 20E goes as opposed to $20). Now that I'm more informed, I will return next year ready to do some damage. That's called experience.
On top of everything else, meeting SO MANY new artists was amazing. Do enough shows in the US, and you will eventually kind of know everyone. I met a plethora of new artists here, and exchanged info on other international shows. So just the connections have made this convention well worth it.
Thank you to all the European people who WATCH MY VLOGS that came by to say hi. Thanks to Lindsay, who has been here since near the beginning, for coming to the convention and giving me a custom drawing!
I hope you guys enjoyed the video. Hopefully I'll see you at Dokomi 2020

I admire your bravery jumping to international shows without speaking the language! I'd have been scared shitless, but at least I can speak broken German!

Hello from Singapore (I came to speak with you for a bit at the end of the show)!
I was pleasantly surprised that culture shock wasn't too bad, I think cos there were people from various countries there and everyone had their own way to communicate politely... Maybe you could have a separate poster with your "facts about this piece: how many hours it took, how many characters are in it, etc" in the local language? That would probably cost less than hiring a person to man the booth.
It was a bit nerve wracking to have no early con rush, we're used to having people paying to enter early so they can swipe limited goods. At that point I was seriously sweating about breaking even lol. It was such a relief when the crowd came in the afternoon. I do wonder about pricing for the city the event is held in, how would you then price for countries where the currency is weaker than the USD?
It's exciting to see you going international :D/ I'm looking forward to all your vlogs, I think at some point you could probably write a book on the topic!

That was a really fun vlog! It is on my bucket list to do an international convention. I think I will start maybe in the UK to help with the language barrier but I would love to jump into other countries. Looks like even with slow sales, you guys had an amazing time!

This is going to be the longest comment I have ever written on one of your videos. And yes I was excited for this vlog. I don't think I have to explain why.
First of all, this vlog was super funny :D especially as a European (and me being someone who likes talking about cultural differences), seeing you struggle with the culture thing is kinda entertaining haha. Oh and I am volunteering to be your translator :D I know 4 languages (ok one of them being Luxembourgish and one English...), so will it get any better? :P And I can tell you everything about the culture. Take this as my official application.
I mean this seriously haha I would not mind spending my time at the Dokomi (we wanted to go back anyway) and selling your art while being able to talk to you more. And I would know if this was something I would want to do too in the future (selling my art at cons). But no worries, you can decline the offer, I won't be mad or anything.
BUT OMG it is so weird hearing myself talk in English hahaha I bet you expected me to be better at it lol (with less accent...the accent is horrible and it was even worse than usual because I was so nervous at first, but I can live with it.) And my facial expressions...stop....so weird seeing it all. And that was a lot more footage of our interaction than I expected haha. And btw at 14:59, I can't remember if I explained it later on, but I was talking about my brother. "I asked him what he likes (Anime) and he said One Piece. And I said that there is no One Piece available, so I asked him if he likes Dragonball and yeah (...some mumbling)". And don't forget me to send me the best part of it all: The Swiss Part. Sorry but your face made that moment even better (you looked so lost) and my friend was pretty embarrassed, because she proceeded on talking in German to you hahaha I felt so sorry for her.
And aaaaaaaaaaah hearing you say the words of appreciation again. They've meant so much to me! It's just so cool that someone appreciates you for your support. That's so rare. And thanks so so much for the hugs. Like really. I wasn't expecting that at all. I like hugs, but I would have never asked for one, because...after all you barely know me. And I feel like it is not my position to ask someone for a hug? Because it is kinda personal? So yeah. Not expecting it. But happy about it.
Oh and you were sooo nice! Thanks for everything! But you were shyer (is that a word?) than I expected :D You seem so self-confident in your vlogs but it was a totally different experience standing in front of you.
And yes, unfortunately your prices were way higher than Germans are used to. Germans don't earn that much money (in comparison to my country) and you might have noticed that a lot of things there are cheaper. I mean, I have bought freakin art for 4€! That's...like nothing...I was pretty shocked at the low prices myself. I didn't expect them to be THAT low. But I don't wanna know the prices at American conventions, they must be pretty high then. And it is interesting that you say the 20€ is more valuable than $20? In which way?
I think that was all I wanted to say. Looking retrospectively at it, there was so much more I would have wanted to talk to you about. But when you are standing in front of someone, you forget most of it and I didn't want to take up too much of your time. Which might be a stupid thought but whatever. And hell, I've caught Sengos and Volbeats for you and we didn't even trade them?! :D How did that happen haha
So yeah...all in all, thanks for the experience.
PS: Your girlfriend was cool haha I liked her and she made funny comments :D

I was pressed for time, so I didn't want to bug about the other Pokemon haha. But next time, I'll give you all the pink for your blue! haha.
And I would absolutely love your help for the next one! I'm trying for Dutch Comic Con next, and a few more in 2020, but nothing is confirmed yet. Having a fluent speaker would do wonders at a busy convention.
And by the currency thing, I mean that people will easily throw $20USD for a poster, but I bet even 15E would be difficult to move over there. You can't really accomplish too much here with $20USD, but you can totally do A LOT, at least in Dusseldorf, with 20E. So next time, I'll be sure to price correctly.
And, idk, we've talked online for years so I figured it warranted a less formal greeting haha.

Don't worry about the Dutch con :D Dutch people are known for being good at speaking English. So you should have less problems over there. My offer was especially for the Dokomi. For any other convention (in Germany) you should inform me on time 😂 if you are ever going to France or Belgium you will probably have more difficulties than you had in Germany. Especially people from France are usually pretty bad English speakers. Worse than Germans (Germans are actually pretty decent at it).
So as you see, it depends from country to country. Unfortunately we don't have any cool cons in Luxembourg 😂
And I take your word for the Pokemon!
And yes you can do a lot of things with 20€ here 😂 thanks for the answer, the US seems to be pretty expensive. But I hope you enjoyed going to a restaurant without tipping the hell out of it lol.

side comment to your comments, I heard from others that European cons tend to sell smaller stuff because on average the living space is much smaller? and that they tend to like trinkets and books? so many think of a why to add that to your selection when doing those cons? though books are pricy to ship

    • @ccayco
      @ccayco  5 років тому

I did hear that, about the living spaces, too. But my biggest sellers were the 40Euro 24x36" prints. So I guess when people really want a print, they'll but it regardless. I hardly moved any of the 11x17"s, mostly because 20Euro for a small print was probably too much for their taste, while 40E seemed more reasonable for the bigger ones.
The only thing I'm going to do differently next time is bring fewer King Sized 3x4ft prints in favor of 24x36", and drop the cost of the 11x17 to 15E and 24x36" to 35E. And throw in a multiple purchase discount.
But I'm not going to change my actual items, since I have no interest in producing anything outside of prints, and maybe shirts. But I'd never transport shirts overseas, since I have zero faith in USPS, UPS, and literally all airlines. haha

Japan Expo didnt cross with Dokomi this yr. JX always crosses with Anime Expo, so I can never go to JX 😖.

Artwork by Christopher Cayco I agree. For the very same reason, it‘s more like Anime Expo but a bit bigger, longer and intense. I had to sacrifice DoKoMi for being a short event. 😔
