- Warning - this video contains alien encounters, sci-fi flares and 80's style sci-fi soundscapes!
Stargrave - the sci-fi skirmish tabletop game from Ospray Games written by Joseph McCullough - has tickled my fancy. In this video I introduce the game and why I intend to start playing it. Taking you on a bit of a sci-fi journey to the game store... resulting in spending of many credits.
A very large thank you to Alpha Spel gamestore, for letting me film on premises but also for taking the time to guide me through the world of sci-fi miniatures. Don't forget to support your LFGS folks.

I don't think I'm the only one that hit the like button when you put the bag of minis on the table.
I haven't quite passed the 1000 minis kind of bag yet... :) But I'm very proud of my bad all the same.
I smashed the like button when the JP-08 appeared. Cool synths and minis? Count me in!!
By the way, probably you know about it already, but in the same vibe of this kind of skirmish games I would recommend you to take a look into Five Parsecs From Home from Modiphius (www.modiphius.net/collections/five-parsecs-from-home). It is focused in solo play, but can also be played cooperative, it looks great.
@@emiliomartin9815 My alien artefact!
A wild guy appears
I'm liking the look of this irresponsible spree that you're on!! :-) Frostgrave and Stargrave both sound so interesting. someday, someday!
Goober!
Goob they are both amazing games and you would be a perfect player for them.
Well Hello B :) Admittedly, there is quite the felling when going on irresponsible sprees. And now I have some responsible follow up painting, to commit myself too. Win win. And yeah.. I mean... space pirate orcs... I happy.
@@52Miniatures pirate orcs are the best type of pirates and orcs.
@Goobertown Hobbies You’ve got the minis. All you need is a rulebook.
How does this guy make a mini documentary every couple weeks. The quality here is better than some channels with 1 mil+ subscribers.
Taking a bow over here Mr Rice Man.
I must admit I watch your videos not for miniature painting, but for nicely done shots arrangement and editing, maybe the best among all miniature youtubers
Much appreciated G :)
Hahahahhahah the side glances before putting that bag of minis down is so relatable.
Ha ha! Thats how I feel every time I see that bag.
"I... i might have done something wrong..."
Was that a The Expanse reference I heard? A man of culture, excellent choice.
my favourite show by far!
Yeah! Like it a lot :)
There is just something so damn captivating about your videos, your audio visuals are so on point. Have you ever discussed your equipment or editing process before? Also, I'm really looking forward to this series.
Thanks H! No I haven't.. I mean I could, but it's not really "user friendly" :) Glad to hear your looking forward to some sci-fi. I definitely am.
I too get that warm feeling when a ttrpg manual encourages me to bend the rules if needed so that everybody enjoys the game.
Watching your videos makes me really happy, thank you!
Yeah! I mean, the rules seem solid. I'm sure there won't be to many occasions when it actually is needed. But just getting invited to do it, makes it possible in a way. Even to change things just for fun.
I love both Frostgrave and Stargrave. Have bought every supplement book for both. Have a horde of 30+ Cultists for Frostgrave.
And for Stargrave im starting with an Eldar Asuryani crew.
Your videos are game changing masterpiece in our hobby world. Every your video show a verry interesting story. Love edit, writing and general warm vibe of your vids.
Thank you so very much D!
Welcome to the wider world of wargaming outside of the 'Games Workshop hobby'. Its nice to sometimes dip in and revel in the freedom it allows. Stargrave is a great ruleset, as are all Joe McCullochs games, Frostgrave, Oathmark and Rangers of Shadowdeep- all have significant merits.
Thank you P! Enjoying myself so far.
Oh man those classic Warzone minis make my heart leap with joy.
I know! I just had to get some.
Infinity is such a fantastic game. I definitely recommend giving it a try after Stargrave!
Great minis Michael! I have never tried the game, not yet.
Hehe nice cheeky Star Destroyer on the background. Seems like swedish skies are pretty dangerous!
Ever since the skies cleared of passenger traffic, those darn destroyers have been having a field day.
I love this guy. He's such a character and isn't so much of a loud and clickbaity mini hobbyist. His facial expressions are too funny too.
Stargrave made me VERY excited to find Sci-Fi miniatures. I mostly have fantasy minis and wanted something other than GW for this. I went a bit crazy, but I find the search, building, and painting aspect of this hobby to be my favorite. I'm glad I just heard about you from Tabletop Minions; I love your editing and video style! I started making videos, myself, and it's fun, but quite the process.
Stargrave excites me too C :) Just feeling free to paint what I want. I'm glad to hear of the recommendation! Welcome to the channel.
me, seeing you get a box of Escher gangers: "yessss" :D
Cool video!
Me too! :) Tanks D
I don't play Necromunda (or any wargame for that matter) but Esher and Golliath were the 2 I got regardless. (not that I don't want the others too, but those 2 stood out the most to me and started with Esher first)
@@MrStatistx I play Escher in 'munda, I also got those two gangs in the starter set. I painted/greenstuffed the Goliath up as a Nurgle corrupted gang. :D
@@deebernaers137 cool idea, got them posted somewhere? Also totally missed that they were together in a starter box, I just bought both of them at separate store visits as impulse buys
@@MrStatistx not all, I have a few on my Instagram @funghork
I am jealous of that gaming store.
I live in the biggest city of our country, but it only has 1 non-warhammer gaming store and they only have warhammer, infinity and star wars in terms of sci fi minis. Those others you got, I either never heard of or only saw online.
Some of the stuff in that bag was ordered online, some bought on "ebay", and some from the gamestore. They do have a lot of stuff though.
My first war game was frostgrave. I backed the Kickstarter for stargrave. Looking forward to it. Even more pleased to a video from you on the subject. Thanks!
Great to hear it Jesse. I was very close to going for Frostgrave, even got the book. And then this showed up on the radar and I realized, sci-fi was something I sorely missed.
@@52Miniatures looking forward to seeing more from you on your dive into sci-if!
Sometimes I take a break for a while. However, your channel is always there when I need to go on a little adventure. Always pleasant, always quality. Much love for your project!
I appreciate that! Thank you J
Question answered - thanks for a quick roundup of Stargrave.
Glad to hear it J!
It impress me, why this channel is not in the 100k subscribers ? IS like an oasis in the desert. Keep it up.
Thanks A! I appreciate it :)
Hmm...might have to give Stargrave a shot when it comes out...
Great H! From what I understand, today is release day for the game.
@@52Miniatures ooh, and here's me sitting with a bunch of store credit at my FLGS...XD
This is exactly the game I've been looking for.
It seems like a cheap way of getting friends involved- no requirement to spend £100s on an army, just a few miniatures, an RPG-lite style skirmish ruleset, and, most importantly, the power of IMAGINATION :) I think my old DnD group might be interested, plus my one friend who plays 40k but rarely has time for a full-scale battle. And if not, the promise of Single Player rules is VERY appealing.
Plus, it's an excuse to have dark synthwave playing in the background, should such an excuse ever be needed 😎
Yeah, and if one already has a few minis lying around, all one needs is the book. I’m sure the first games might take a while, but once the rules are learned this seems like a fast game. The “random encounter” pushing players to get done fast or be surrounded by pirates.
Your filmmaking skills are something else. I may not understand every word but I’m still hanging on every word. Bravo. Also love Stargrave and Frostgrave!
Thank you C! I appreciate it.
So much nostalgia just hit me seeing you hold up that Warzone Mutant Chronicles blister pack... I have quite the collection of old hand sculpted pewter for that game in a drawer here in the office.
I know! I am going to paint a few of those eventually. Just haven't found the time yet :)
The sneaky Star Destroyer!
Dangerous neighbourhood!
@@52Miniatures at least they aren't Spaceballs.

I see a "52" video; I watch a 52 video. . . I'm a simple man., Great as always.
This is the way
Thanks M!
I recently got the Stargrave Rulebook due to this video. I like it quite a bit. Having a use for all my random sci fi minis is great as well. Thanks for the video.
Glad to hear it D! I hope you keep enjoying Stargrave.
Great! I too have become stargrave-curious. Thanks for sharing & explaining the way you do...a way which I find is extremely helpful to me. Thanks so much. Great channel
Thank you Adam. I still haven't made my way to any gameplay.. but I'm enjoying the journey so far a lot.
Another amazingly assembled video. That "incoming transition" sign looks so professional, and that sneaky star destroyer was epic :) And as always, a fun topic, well presented and making me want to follow in your footsteps. Bravo, good sir, bravo!
Thank you as always RK :) I must admit to have spent a bit of extra time on this one :)
@@52Miniatures have you worked for the film industry before? Or for the TV? Because there's this aura about your videos that just screams professionalism and experience.
@@acidcoen I'm a Photographer, both for still and "mooving" pictures. So yeah :)
@@52Miniatures now it all makes sense! :) Also, big props for that Warzone mini! I was in love with the setting as a teenager. I played some Doom Trooper and Dark Eden, and even got a few warzone minis, but only painted them over 20 years later... still, Warzone has a very special place in my heart.
@@acidcoen The card game right? I've got that lying around somewhere in the basement...
Nothing like an expanse reference RIGHT after you've just started the forth series!
I'm excited that you are excited for Stargrave! I also had an irresponsible spending spree, and of course now a whole new set of terrain needs to be built too....
Yeah B! Thanks. I will probably have to go on another one to make terrain for Stargrave. But that's top secret video content rumours only. You haven't heard nothing.
@@52Miniatures My lips are sealed!
You will find Five Parsecs from Home by Nordic Weasel games quite a nice use of all those new miniatures and your Stormcast rangers will fit nicely in Five Leagues from the Borderlands if you are interested in solo miniature agnostic games. Only recently discovered this channel and am enjoying it greatly. Good luck...Joe McCullough is a splendid fellow and all his games are great. Rangers of Shadow Deep and Oathmark are two of my favorites. Thanks for the Kromlech discount too! Orks really are the best pirates.
Thanks for the tips Kris, I appreciate it :)
I hope you have fun painting all the new sci-fi miniatures and playing the new game. And I look forward to your future vids for stargrave👍👍😁
I'm exited already J, thanks :)
"Ok cool! Time to try out Stargrave! ... Hmm... but I don't have much time to paint these days... Not a problem!! Ok... so my crew is a 10-man squad of a humanoid space solider type species possessing superhuman strength and stamina. They are taller and heavier than your average man and they religiously wear armored space suits with very large pauldrons, where the crew's emblem is displayed. The entire crew typically wears the same color armor and they travel the stars fighting for their Emperor.... Ok ready!"
Exactly! That’s the thing. One can play with whatever favorite minis, or just any mini if one wants to try the game out :)
If you come from AoS/Frostgrave background, you'd have your mind blown with Warmachine :) It's like moving from playing Snakes&Ladders to competing in Chess. No game makes my brain boil as much with relevant possibilities. I started with GW games too, but WM&H is just another world of intense, purposeful strategy and player agency as compared to just rolling dice and seeing what happens for hours on end.
Never looked back :)
Hah! Thanks Robert. AoS makes my brain crumble though. Soo many things to remember all the time! :)
Great Video! Orks are also going to be my space pirates. I had and unopened box of Flash Gitz that will now be chasing down my crews through the ravaged galaxy. I just love that this gives me a way to utilize minis from so many board games that have sat unplayed for far too long. That doesn't mean I didn't special order a Doctor Who crew just for this, though, lol.
Ha ha! that's the spirit. I was just very happy getting a lot of the sci-fi stuff I have never been able to "justify" getting in the past.
Excellent video, love it! In your alternative universe, pirate orks rule the galaxy. At last, orks won ;)
Orcs always win in the end :) Thanks!
I have just started looking at Frostgrave and other skirmish games as well, coming from the RPG / D&D side of the hobby. I'm very interested in Stargrave so this is very appropriately timed. Great video as always, thanks.
Hey C, glad I could inspire a bit. I had a good look at frostgrave, even got the book. But then realized sci-fi was what was missing in my life.
i absolutely adore 'frostgrave' and really look forward to getting this (especially since it might be what finally gets me to paint the piles and piles of sf models i have in precariously stacked boxes!)
Nice D! Yeah, love the "just put all the minis I love in the crew" thing.
Best channel. Cant get enuff. I want the video to never come to an end.
Thank you greatly Charles!
oh man, the guilt complex of infinity models lol. I had to get all the Aleph models. I really do like the idea of building a collection based on a narrative that I enjoy. Those narratives are hard to find ime.
Great looking minis Jason. Narratives can feel a bit cheesy sometimes.. but just going for one helps a lot. I'm not sure about mine yet...
I like you, you are a gem. Great storytelling 👍😺 looking forward to other videos.
Ps. I subscribed.
Welcome to the channel M! And thank you.
I found out about this game from Adam and further research led me here. The cycle of tabletop knowledge sharing continues. 👍
Lovely stuff!
Seeing you branch out to explore indie miniatures games makes me happy!
Thanks Y! I do have a little happy feeling inside too :)
Wow I love the philosophy behind this game. Also, the synth work was brilliant! Is there anything this man cannot do?!
Hah! Thank you. The synth pretty much plays itself. The guitar though...
Another excellent piece.
I picked up both Stargrave and Frostgrave during the pandemic as they scratch an itch in regards to minis that Dungeons and Dragons doesn’t quite do (the focuses are very different). Now I just have to wait out this virus so I can see my friends and put the plastic on the table!
Thanks Corwin, and nice to hear. There are now solo player rules for Stargrave released. Free pdf download.
@@52Miniatures yeah I saw that! Honestly solo scenario generators are such a golden opportunity right now considering so many folks can’t exactly get out to play, and it’s a real stand up thing to make it free when they could have just as easily put a price tag on it.
I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed for a Frostgrave supplement of a similar vein.
Varför går det inte att dubbelgilla en video!?!?!! Supermysigt och välgjort som alltid! 🥳
Tack Niklas!
Great video, your enthusiasm is infectious. 10 models per team you say?, I'm guessing you're not just doing the one team then 😄
I have extras in case some of them get killed. And also minis for the "random encounters".
Man i love these videos, it's incredible how you can produce them like this. Keep it up!
Thank you F! Quite the time was spent on this one... Admittedly, the scrips are what take the longest. But I'm having fun :)
I'm looking forward to seeing more star grave/space pirate videos. ^-^
Thanks Austin! At least one more Orc pirate video I think :)
Really excited for your upcoming Stargrave content! Cant wait to see what kind of crews you make.
Thanks Dennis! I'm very exited too.
Really enjoyed your video. I read a lot about Frostgrave and Stargrave. During the pandemic I bought Rangers of the Shadowdeep from the same writer Joseph and enjoyed just printing and buy some different encounters and heros for solo play. Never played yet but I had a lot of fun with painting small groups and single miniatures without a "one army color scheme.
Looking forward for more space ships in your background and nice videos about Stargrave!
Thank you Christian! Yeah, Joseph seems like a busy writer!
I invested in the nickstarter. Frostgrave/ Stargrave is a great. Art is fantastic. Great alternative to GW.
That Nickstarter looked very good! Good job :)
I can't even express fully how freaking amazing this video is!
Thanks T!
As someone who is mentally dipping my toes into tabletop minis and has been consuming various youtube videos from various channels, your excitement around this new venture has me looking forward to your coming videos in the Stargrave universe and has me ready to jump in both feet. Thank you!
Glad to hear it A! Welcome to the toe dipping :)
Good video, I was undecided whether or not to try Stargrave, but this video finally made me decide, so I will have the excuse to assemble and paint a team from one of my favorite video games E.Y.E :)
Glad to hear it V! Sounds wonderful.

@@52Miniatures can't wait to see the minis you make for it.
man........ i bet ur sick of my comments and me talking you up however - your insane. ur channel is so far ahead of anything on youtube it isnt even fair. the passion and quality put into everything. like once i have a job again i will have to start supporting you. its the least you deserve. i pay for utter crap like sky and netflix who have never produced anything ive even found as interesting as your videos. the sound the camera angles the evolution of your story and the mini stories within in each episode. its just so refreshing. keep doing whatever you are doing because what it is is pure magic.
Thank you Carl! For some reason UA-cam hid your comment from me, so sorry about the late reply. I deeply appreciate it. Thank you.
Outstanding video...you always get me so engaged by your presentation.
Thanks you L! I appreciate it :)
Great info, Stargrave sounds awesome!
I hop so Phill! :)
Looks like a great game, I play Frostgrave regularly with my 12yr old, he has a band based around his favourite D&D character so is perhaps just a little tooooo invested. Heaven help us if he dies ;0)
This being from the same stable I'm confident it'll be just as fun, and maybe it'll lead him into some SciFi space opera style gaming - for me that would be a freshener.
I had to chuckle when we got to the appreciation of the welcoming approach to rules and play (and gaming just for the joy of it) in Stargrave, not because of the very stark contrast with GW, but because it so mirrors my own appreciation of this channel.
The insights you find here from a clever brain coming back and starting afresh in the mini painting hobby, discovering and refining as he goes, and articulating it all so well to us viewers are top notch. The way that they're presented, the welcoming, friendly, convivial delivery is so like a conversation, just one where you don't butt in much because you're too busy listening. So unlike a normal youtube tutorial/presentation that it elevates a learning opportunity to the level of a fireside chat, all that's missing is a couple of glasses of special reserve and the crackling of a fresh log on the fire. The living room he often uses as a backdrop couldn't have been bettered by a set designer, I want to live there, take me from this admittedly comfortable space of trip over toys and nerf guns and loving Chihuahuas that shed like yetis and coffee cups and discarded jumpers and homework and ....gameboxes
I don't want to have to move two guns and a sleepy, grumpy chihuahua just to sit down anymore, want to gaze at bookcases and watch the light glisten from the etchings on my antique telescope... i so want a globe of the world that doesn't open up to reveal an array of liquor, a bag of dog jerky and someone's missing sock....
I should also say that seeing you put a bag with so many diverse and interesting minis that aren't GW down, has me so ready to see the vids of you tackling them that I can't really express it. There are a bunch I don't recognise too, which is a whole new journey of exploration. Not a fan of orks, especially the GW mad uns I inwardly shrunk but then remembered all the fun i had with the dawn of war II vid games included a great crew of just such mad scifi orks and how i could view these just the same way. Might have to houserule myself an ork skavvacrew even and find some over the top minis (discreetly by mail order under an assumed name of course - may have to set up a separate ebay account with the name changed to protect the guilty/pompous/smugly superior...)
Your commentary warms my heart Allwyn, thank you. I think somewhere along the way, the videos reflect my own view on content creating as well... there are great straight forward painting tutorials out there "how to" videos. But maybe not enough videos that just keep us inspired and want to paint. I'm hoping my videos just makes people paint, regardless if my content actually corresponds with what others are working on. Now, I do want to make a few more "me just painting vids". Mainly just because I want to paint more :) Anyway, rambling on. I just meant to say thank you.
I won't tell. Promise. Check out Spelcrow (angrier) or Kromlech (comical). If you actually go for Kromlech, you can get a 10% discount during checkout if you use 52Miniatures as discount "voucher". I will be making vids on my orcs though, so you can sit tight and see what you think :)

Of course! I need to get my hands on parrots...
You have quite a lot of material to paint. Fantastic!!!
I have never played warhammer or another miniature game. But I have to admit that with your video, the effects, audio and passion, makes me want to play.
When I started out a few years ago, I was mainly interested in the painting. Although playing the game was something of a "childhood dream". So I made sure to start that... and I must say. It's a lot of fun. Now this really is a great combo for me. Getting the "zen" painting and the fun of gaming.
HELL YES!!! SPACE PIRATES!!! You need to get a brightly colored shoulder cannon named Polly... like the parrot!!! ‘YARRR Polly want a crack-shot!?!?!’ ~~ZAAAAAAAAP~~~
