    Those mode 7 effects are impressive, they somehow managed to behave those stretching & shrinking backgrounds as sprites and how they implemented collision detection on backgrounds as well, it's either way pretty amezing.

    Why does no one mention the different firing modes for the weapons?
    Being able to swap between the field laser when out in the open, and the homing laser when in confined areas is fantastic, and being able to lock the options in relation to your ship or have them free floating with the press of a button is invaluable

      Compile had some sort of secret magical key to flooding the screen with sprites on Nintendo hardware. Pure magic. Dates back to Zanac and Gun-Nac. Mind-blowing awesomeness.

    • @dcikaruga
      @dcikaruga 7 років тому +1

      Yeah the SNES CPU wasn't very powerful, so they must off-loads the workload onto the graphic accelerator, not sure about the details, but its shows the SNES can handle a franatic shooter, very good coding on their part there.

    • @ztoxtube
      @ztoxtube 7 років тому +1

      Yeah I'm sure there was some sort of back-and-forth between multiple chips. I've come to find out that the vast majority of programming on old systems was workarounds.

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys 7 років тому +2

      No, no. The SNES cpu isn't anywhere near as weak as people seem to think. That's really a misunderstanding of what it is. For many purposes it's actually much faster than 68000 on a clock-for-clock basis. But you have to know HOW the CPU works efficiently, and that's nothing at all like how to write efficient 68000 code, nor is it like z80 or x86 code.
      It has it's own logic to it, and you respect that, or you create garbage code.
      The key thing the Mega Drive CPU has is that it runs at 7 mhz, whereas the SNES CPU runs at 2.68 mhz most of the time, but can run at 3.57 mhz under certain conditions. With the exception of needing to do multiplication or division, for which the 68000 is unequivocally superior, at it's higher speed of 3.57 mhz performance is nearly comparable to a 68000 at 7 mhz. (due to it's design It also requires faster RAM to run at 3.57 mhz than the 68000 does to run at 7)
      Still, when running at 2.68 mhz the SNES is definitely slower than the Mega Drive's CPU...
      People do have a habit of overstating by how much though.
      40 sprites is about normal for a 'competent' SNES game...
      But, there are several games which really aren't competent, and some even get so bad as to struggle with 5 or so sprites. That's not the hardware, that's coders that either don't know what they're doing, or don't care.
      It's not some magic though. It's just proper coding and optimisation.
      The game runs on stock hardware, and there really isn't any way to offload the workload onto the Graphics chip; that's just not how that chip works.
      I think the problem the SNES has is very few people seemed to understand how to use a 65816 properly, or how to handle sprites.
      there's 128 hardware sprites, and you have to calculate movement updates for each of them, then copy the result to the graphics chip.
      There are multiple places where you could seriously screw that up.
      But, it's not magic.
      It just suggests that Compile actually knows what it's doing, and can be bothered to optimise it's code properly.

      @@KuraIthys
      You may be right.
      Many people always dismissed the SNES as having a weak CPU for the reason it had all the slowdowns in certain games, but I never fully bought that explanation.
      My suspicions were somewhat justified when playing the "FastROM" patched versions of games like Contra 3. Basically, Konami cheaped out on that game back in the day by using slower, cheaper roms and the SNES wasn't able utilize the full speed of it's CPU for a game like that as a consequence. Same goes for games like Capcom's Super Ghouls and Ghosts.
      And of course, we get to games like Space Megaforce: not sure if it's using a FastROM chip, but there's plenty of onscreen action without hardly any slowdown. It's a similar story with games like Super Turrican and Rendering Ranger R2. They seem like very well programmed games without needing any enhancement chips.
      Then we get to games like Kirby Super Star: most of the time, it runs fine, but there's quite a few parts where it struggles to run at full speed, and there's not THAT much happening on screen. And when you find out that game is using the SA-1 chip, there's simply no excuse for it not to run perfectly 99.9% of the time. Not to knock on that game (it's really fun), but it feels like a victim of sloppy programming.

    Space Megaforce has "SPACE! MEGAFORCE! Presented by Toho." Which is ridiculous when you remember it's a Super Nintendo game and they shouldn't have had much room for unnecessary voices. :D Okay, that's probably not worth the extra price. I do remember getting the game years ago from GameStop in a boy-one-get-one sale. Which means GameStop sold me the game for a price of no cents. :D

      Eh. I've seen crazier. XD
      It's only a few seconds. if you want crazy sound stuff on the SNES you should try Tales of Phantasia.
      Granted that's a 48 megabit (6 megabytes) ROM, but it includes about 100 voice samples, a spoken poem in the intro and an entire intro song with vocals and lyrics that lasts a good minute or two...

    First thing, no idea how the hell Compile got this game to run on Snes, (does it use a chip? seriously would like to know). Second thing, the first 3 levels of Musha were too easy as well, I definitely dislike such a sharp curve, a steady consistent difficulty level throughout most of the game makes the experience better overall, that way veteran players don't have to be bored for the first half of a playthrough.

      Retro Soul No special chip.
      Really impressive.

      It doesn't do anything particularly impressive.
      People just have an unreasonably poor opinion of the SNES for some unexplained reason.
      (Which is probably not helped by a few too many poorly optimised games - it's like nobody in the 90's knew how to write proper 65816 code...)
      This is really fairly trivial for what the SNES is capable of in theory...
      That fact has just been obscured by piles and piles of terribly coded games.
      (Here's looking at you, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts...)
      You really shouldn't be surprised that coders that know what they're doing can get results like this.
      I guess people have just been brainwashed by endless incompetence.
      I have no idea why you think it would need a special chip.
      And no, it doesn't use one. A quick check in an emulator with debugging support shows it uses Slow ROM, and no expansion chips.
      But why would it need one? It doesn't do anything that would put any particular strain on a SNES unless the programmers are terrible at their job.

    A lot of people rave about how amazing this game is, and umm... Sorry but I don't really see it... It's a fine game, but I'd not pick it over Axelay, Aero Fighters, Spriggan Powered or Gradius 3 for example... Maybe over R-Type 3, Phallanx and Super SWIV, but that's about it, honestly I'd rather play Blazing Lazers or Gun Nac instead...

      Michirin9801 the Aleste/M.U.S.H.A. games are done no justice on UA-cam, it's one of those games you might have to play to feel the fun. It's just has very satisfying gameplay, can't explain it. But I know what you're saying they look basic

      I've played it, I've played almost the entire series, the only one I'm missing to my knowledge is Robo Aleste, and it is indeed a fine series, but I don't really think Super Aleste is Compile's best, not even their best on the SNES, that would be Spriggan Powered to me...
      Again, this is a fine game, but I don't see what makes it "the best on the SNES" like some people like to say it is...

      This game actually reminds me a lot of gun nac. The ship you control looks pretty much identical and the power up system is similar. I'd still rather play gun nac though. Love you video game remixes by the way Michirin :-)

    Easily one of the best shmups for SNES/Super Famicom.

    Buy a super expensive, out of print game? If I can't emulate it, it's crap.
