A Mecha month? Yeah! That's awesome! Cybernator aka Assault Valken Suit (Uncut version) is one of my favorite. There is a remake for the ps2 it's called Valken.
I remember owning and beating this game multiple times as a child in the 90s. Couldnt for the life of me remember what it was called and have been trying to find footage!
I never knew this game existed but man does it look absolutely amazing. You can consider this a done deal as I'm getting this one way or another. I wish I knew about this game when I was younger...
I really need to give this game a full playthrough. Love the look of this. Front Mission Gun Hazard, Metal Warriors, Ranger X, Macross... There are a ton of great 16bit mech games
This game is the second Assault Suit Lynoss game. The first one was on the genesis galled Target Earth. There is also one of the PS2 and the Sega Saturn. Very good series. If you like the SNES and want something a bit better with similar themes try Front Mission: Gun Hazard. Wonderful game. I highly suggest getting both.
+Jayce Ran I own Assault Suits Valken. They leave out the speaker and the fact that EU commits suicide. I had the import PS2 remake but its not as good as the SNES.
bvzxa3 Yeah I was going to mention that. Also they leave a person behind as they are reentering earth. He is screaming while burning alive in the atmosphere.
Front Mission: Gun Hazard was done by the same team for the SNES, but published and assisted by Squaresoft. It's amazing. It plays like a sequel with a really cool RPG side to it and the soundtrack is by Nobuo Uematsu. As much as I love Cybernator, I'd say go for Gun Hazard if you can get your hands on it.
Mark, you're a badass, you knew about the hoverbikes from Akira. It's funny, because I thought the same thing when I saw them. Regardless, I'll definitely have to give this game a try.
the japanese versio is called This Assault Suits Valken is the sequel to ASSAULT SUIT LEYNOS that was previously released on Genesis, can you review this one too. This is one great SNES games ilike too.
Love this game so much. FYI there's a patch for the Japanese version of the game (Assault Suits Valken) that puts the anime-style comms portraits back in (which makes the cutscenes much easier to follow) and removes the censorship. Also anyone who loves this game should also check out Front Mission Gun Hazard (only released in Japan but has an English fan-translation!) for the Super Famicom. Very similar gameplay.
+delta7890 I was gonna mention this patch as well as the excellent Gun Hazard game translation. The versions I have played. Although seeing some of these levels is making me realize I must not have finished Cybernator. I was a huge fan of Target Earth (Assault Suits Leynos) back in the early Genesis days and didnt discover Cybernator till more recently. Looking forward to eventually playing Valken II and Leynos II on the Saturn and PS1 respectively.
The localization changes definitely impact the presentation a bit, but I wouldn't say we only got "half the game". No actual gameplay elements or stages were cut for "Cybernator".
I found out about this game because I bought Front Mission: Gun Hazard and found out via wikipedia (citation needed) that some of the staff that worked on Gun hazard worked on this. What sold me on it because it has a few platforms from Super Metroid or so it seems. I say it looks like a game for the SEGA Genesis. It must be the cool factor of this game.
Nice! Mark, you should pick up the Japan-only Front Mission: Gun Hazard. It's made by the same developers, and has similar gameplay with added RPG elements.
This game reminds me of Ranger X for the Megadrive, which is a really good thing. Apparently, there was a sequel called Assault Suits Leynos II for the Sega Saturn, which, story-wise, is a direct sequel to Assault Suit Leynos. Tat was called Target Earth wgich MArk already reviewed once. This game was remae for the ps2 in 2005 but never released stateside.
+Marco Wolken Target Earth and Ranger X are both classic genesis/mega drive games which never got much recognition. Ranger X is one ill have to go back and beat. Target Earth I completed and it provides a nice satisfying challenge. There is an infinite continues "cheat" in the options menu which I considered a legit way to play the game. Once I get my emulation pc set up, I really want to try the assault suit leynos 2 on saturn. Looks awesome. I didnt realize cybernator was related in some way to target earth, though I immediately saw the similiarities. Are they made by the same company? Assault suit leynos 2 is a sequel to the first, known as target earth in the US. Not a sequel to cybernator, as far as I know.
TheConsole Killer Apparently all the aforementioned games were made by NCS, which some people will probably know as Masaya. They're also responsible for the Chou Aniki series of games. I never did beat Target Earth, I might have to give the infinite continues code a try. From what I remember, Mark wasn't super positive about it.
If you liked this game, you would love Metal Warriors. Plays much like this except with multiple mech types and a versus mode. Oh, and those guys on the ground? You can hop out and shoot them face-to-face. Expensive as heck, though
Great Mech game! This game is comparable to Metal warriors which has really cool multiplayer, but is WAY TO EXPENSIVE. I like the single player in Cybernator more personally, and it's pretty affordable (usally $15-$25) compared the the $100-$250 for Metal Warriors
It's cool, but if you don't already had a modded console or a PAL SNES, don't bother with the PAL version. North America got it, and it's not that expensive or hard to find.
I called out watchmojo about them using footage from Mark's videos not too long ago. I thought 'is he cool with this? Does he know they're using not only his video game footage, but his voiceovers?'
Ivor Biggen this is only a game Konami published in the west. The development team was NCS / Masaya. Konami had nothing to do with the development. This game is known as Assault Suits Valken in Japan, and is part of a larger series of mech games. One of those games is Target Earth or Assault Suit Leynos on the Sega Genesis.
Just a regular snes game cinematic music and abit slow action, i think it would,ve be more exciting on a sega genesis with more action and fast paced metalic music.
In my opinion the Super nintendo's sound chip wasn't really suited for the bass heavy rock songs that Shmumps generally have, was better suited to slower paced songs with a lot of relatively high quality samples. Still, it doesn't sound terrible or anything.
Why do you keep complaining about people stealing your footage. Your whole channel is dedicated to video-taping somebody else's copyrighted material and monetizing it!
Dude, it's Watch Mojo! Did you see their video, Top 10 Anime Films? They also have Top 10 UA-camrs. I mean, that is so fair use that it's not even funny. Mark has probably never written a single line of code or modeled a single character in 3DS Max, yet he's making a living off of that work. It's understandable that Watch Mojo gets more views, as top tens have more universal appeal than old videogames and drunkenness.
This is a good game, its hard as F#@#, but its good. You can also get it on Wii Shop for like $8. One thing I like about Wii shop games is, 480p. This also might, be avail for Wii U in 720..
Love that classic mech look.
Over 20 years and still playing this game good to see somebody gave it a shout and the some of the tracks are awesome
How did I miss this game back in the day? Looks really cool. The cartoon parts remind me of Robotech.
This was one of my faves as a child. Good memories ty CGR!
I still have this game in the attic with my SNES. Ahh childhood, those were the days.
love this game. lots of good childhood memories. tears of pain, joy and satisfaction of finally getting to a new stage.
A Mecha month? Yeah! That's awesome! Cybernator aka Assault Valken Suit (Uncut version) is one of my favorite.
There is a remake for the ps2 it's called Valken.
Now here's a game from my childhood that I really tried to love! Just could never beat it...
I remember owning and beating this game multiple times as a child in the 90s. Couldnt for the life of me remember what it was called and have been trying to find footage!
One of my favorite SNES games, I used to play this one all the time when I was younger.
I remember playing this game as a kid. never new the name of it until now. good times playing this game.
Definitely getting this game! Thanks for the review Mark!
One of the hidden gems from my childhood!
There are a ton of great 16bit mech games
i had this as a kid. i had a pal snes but a american cart. had to use a converter. but boy was the game so much fun. it was a challange and awesome
This game is the second Assault Suit Lynoss game. The first one was on the genesis galled Target Earth. There is also one of the PS2 and the Sega Saturn. Very good series. +Jayce Ran
I haven't played my SNES since 2001, now I had to go and find the game lol.
bvzxa3
It is a kick ass game for sure. Way ahead of its time as far as the subtle drama.
Jayce Ran
Agreed
This game reminds me a lot of Metal Warriors, also on the Snes...
I liked the style of old shout outs a way more.
I was born too late to have these as my childhood games, I came in at the PS2 in 03 I think it was.

Still own his classic with my snes. Never giving that up.
the japanese versio is called This Assault Suits Valken is the sequel to ASSAULT SUIT LEYNOS that was previously released on Genesis, can you review this one too. This is one great SNES games ilike too.
Footage you recorded yourself and didn't steal from others? He'll watch mojo does that too! LOL I love you Mark.
Love this game so much. FYI there's a patch for the Japanese version of the game (Assault Suits Valken) that puts the anime-style comms portraits back in (which makes the cutscenes much easier to follow) and removes the censorship.

The North American version was heavily edited. We got about half the game in my opinion.
The localization changes definitely impact the presentation a bit, but I wouldn't say we only got "half the game". No actual gameplay elements or stages were cut for "Cybernator".
The last stages were cut. You should check out a side by side comparison.
I remember enjoying the game music, that classy 90s feels. eh likely just me.
Naw man the music's awesome. Mark was just giving his inner Genesis fanboy some time in the sun lol.
My favorite SNES game of all time
This game IMMEDIATELY came to mind when you stated that this month was about robots...
Damn I can't believe I've never heard of this game. Definitely gonna get it
Nice!
Mark, you should pick up the Japan-only Front Mission: Gun Hazard. It's made by the same developers, and has similar gameplay with added RPG elements.
Mark, where did you get the little silver mech figure from? it's a perfect size to go on my NES cartridges shelf with my other game type objects.
This game reminds me of Ranger X for the Megadrive, which is a really good thing. Apparently, there was a sequel called Assault Suits Leynos II for the Sega Saturn, which, story-wise, is a direct sequel to Assault Suit Leynos. Nice. Cybernator is definately a classic. One Ill have to go back and beat one day. The napalm tip sounds interesting. Never knew about that.
5:24 It also turned up with a rejigged soundtrack and an extra level as "Valken" on the PS2.
Great review.
love this game been known of it a long time sadly only been able to play the rom only never found it in the wild
one of my fave games on the SNES :)
Thank you for making this review. How did you play this pal game?
This game looks amazing, I wanna play it!!
What is the name of the side scrolling mech suit game on ones where you can climb out and into other mechs?
My nostalgic is hard right now!
This game is one of my favorite SNES games, that I still own. Another favorite is Axelay ( yes, that's a hint )
it is on the virtual console too
Always better to have a physical copy
Will you still get the Napalm if you PUNCH during the first level before the boss?
Derek is still in cgr , used as a door stopper.
oooo looks cool. now got to go find it!
the PS4 now has a remake of the old games called ASSAULT SUIT LEYNOS and it is amazing...sadly i needed to import it since it is only for japan!
This Assault Suits Valken is the sequel to ASSAULT SUIT LEYNOS that was previously released on Genesis, and now remake dor PS4.
This game does look like fun, i want to pick up one now lol.
would this be made by the same people who did target earth?
Looks pretty damn awesome
The guy from Ortona left, it was the only reason I watched the credits.
love the videos. keep it up please!
The platformer sections are very similar to Front Mission: Gun Hazard. :)
If you liked this game, you would love Metal Warriors. Plays much like this except with multiple mech types and a versus mode. Oh, and those guys on the ground? You can hop out and shoot them face-to-face. Expensive as heck, though
Cool gonna put it on my snes mini
Do Battle Unit Zeoth for mech month. I had that for Game boy when I was younger. that was a great game.
Makes me think of Ranger-X
When you say rreeaallyy difficult do you mean chakan the forever man or freaking ecco the dolphin?
can you review fear 2 with the excuse that it has mechs?
The character art was made by none less than 'friggin goddamn Satoshi Urushihara! I just realised this now !
I freakin loved that game.
Mark. Do you have Framemeister?
I love the Sega saturn game :D
If you enjoyed CYBERNATOR try Metal Warriors also on the SNES.
That's awesome
target earth > cybernator all day. yes I know they're the same universe but TE was killer!
If you like Cybernator try a game called Metal warriors on the Snes too. Even has a Vs mode thats great.
Great Mech game! This game is comparable to Metal warriors which has really cool multiplayer, but is WAY TO EXPENSIVE. I like the single player in Cybernator more personally, and it's pretty affordable (usally $15-$25) compared the the $100-$250 for Metal Warriors
Special Edition cheez itz! To hell with those, I'll take my cheezitz without crappy CGI thank you.
We all need more CGR… EDF EDF…EDF…
Mark review the Coleco Chameleon ... :)
It does look rather good.
Awesome 😈
I could never complete this. Loved it, though.
Classic Game Room is awesome!!!!!
Fuck watchmojo.com, great video.
+EliteWarMasta Now I know who he was talking about.
*****
I get a feeling StuckMojo stole some of Mark's footage or something.
+Games That I Play Probably... and didn't get consent from him.
SeanStrife
Yeah dang needing consent. My friend works for a television legal department, if its in a show, he's the guy that gets written consent.
+Lavaduder watchmojo often use CGR footage in their game videos :)
Great game!
Lord Karnage do a Comix Zone review.
Maybe it is slow, because you are playing the PAL version which is 1/6th slower than the NTSC version....
I actually have this on US SNES. :)
cool game. Konami in its prime was a force to be reckoned with.
Is there a NTSC version?
Yup I think there is, have you tried Amazon?
It's cool, but if you don't already had a modded console or a PAL SNES, don't bother with the PAL version. North America got it, and it's not that expensive or hard to find.
FUCKING CGR IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG!
Looks like Robocop's nemesis.
i swear to god if watchmojo is stealing your stuff i am gonna be mad !
They are...
Mygingerguy i knew it!!! grrrr
cool
I called out watchmojo about them using footage from Mark's videos not too long ago. I thought 'is he cool with this? Does he know they're using not only his video game footage, but his voiceovers?'
Konami just made classic after classic on the snes, pity they are trash company these days!!
+Ivor Biggen All good things must end.
Sega,Konami,Capcom,Ubisoft,Rare.. oh how the mighty have fallen.

Mecha Month!? And they didnt invite me
im surprised this game isnt on genesis. if it was it wouldnt have as much slow-down as it does.
Yes, because of blast processing of course lol
+Raif Nation slow down feels kinda epic though. like a test of snes power
Turrican Master race
Why do you keep complaining about people stealing your footage. Your whole channel is dedicated to video-taping somebody else's copyrighted material and monetizing it!
+John Jenkins It's not exactly the same thing...
Ironically, it is. If he can do it and just claim fair use, so can they. It's not like they're just using the entire video.
Dude, it's Watch Mojo! Did you see their video, Top 10 Anime Films? They also have Top 10 UA-camrs. I mean, that is so fair use that it's not even funny. This game was extremely hard, I never finished it
Tom Wilson Hehe yeah it's a good 'un
This is a good game, its hard as F#@#, but its good. You can also get it on Wii Shop for like $8. One thing I like about Wii shop games is, 480p. This also might, be avail for Wii U in 720..
This is on the eShop on Wii U
The cover looks like a robotic ninja turtle.
+Centipede google sazabi, and tell me if that thing isnt a mecha shredder... in red.
