    now that cat ear beanies are getting popular, i came back to this tutorial so i could make my own :) and so far it’s turning out great! i used a 40 peg loom instead of 41, but it works just fine

    I highly recommend this tutorial! ❤️ I made this hat when the video tutorial 1st came out, and now I have come back and made another one. This is the most comfortable hat to wear. It doesn't squish your head or ears. It stays in place. It doesn't ruin your hair. I get compliments on this hat all the time. A big plus is that even if you mess up your knit/purl rows, because you fold the hat, the mistakes don't show.

    Thank you so much for this very clear video and cute pattern! It was only my second knitting project EVER (first one was a scarf), and the hat turned out very cute. So if a total newbie like me can do it, that means you did an awesome job filming and explaining :) Thanks again, I love it!

    I just knew that the cat ears was going to be something separate. So literally a square or rectangle but the roundness of the head exaggerates the corners making them to like cat 🐱 ears. Bravo 👏🏽

    Hey everyone, I've been reading the comments and the questions all seem similar. I'm gonna try to answer these. I'm a beginner knitter but have figured some of this out, I think. Lol. If you have a loom with an odd number of pegs, you can do this knit pattern, it's called seed stitch. K1, P1, and because there are an odd number of pegs, it offsets each round so you don't get rib stitch. You can't really loom seed stitch on a loom with an even number of pegs. You can do moss stitch though which is really lovely. So if you have a loom with an even number of pegs, try knitting for two rows, then purling for two rows. Alternate like that to the end of your project. That is moss stitch.
    This hat does not cover your ears. If you need to do that, measure from the top of your head to the bottom of your earlobe. Let's say it's 9 inches. With this pattern, you need to knit 18 inches then for the fold over. This should cover your ears when finished then. If you are not folding over because you are using thicker yarn, then just loom for 9 inches. She folds over for warmth and structure, so the ears sit up. Measuring the head helps you adapt this pattern for any size head. If your baby shows 4 inches from top of head to bottom of ear, then knit 8 inches and fold over.
    The loom needs to be about as big round as your head to fit. A 41 peg loom is a cowl size for me, too big for my head. So measure around your head the way you want this to sit and then measure the inside of your looms. Choose whichever loom is closest and adapt the stitch based upon whether you have even or odd pegs.
    There are lots of cat hat patterns right now for the women's march on Washington on Jan 21, 2017. Check them out for crochet or on straight needles as well. Good luck! 🍀

    I added several more centimeters to the length, and that helped to cover my ears. It was ther perfect size. I think I went to about 40-42 cm. The thickness is wonderful. It will definitely keep my head warm. I like the suggested knitting patterns as well. Overall, I'm very happy with this hat! I used orange yarn to make it more like a fox hat.

Btw, I love al your videos, this is my 3rd time following your loom knit patterns. Super easy and helpful. I like that you use light color yarns so I can see what you’re doing clearly. Thank you very much. :)

    I just finished making this and the only thing about your tutorial I didn't do was flip it over to make it 2 layers when wearing it. Rather than that, I put the loom on my head every few rounds when the length was getting close. When I could pinch the ends together so it was comfortable, I took it off the loom regularly and sewed it like you did. Turned it over and it still works fine. The length I have is about 21-23 cm (8-9 in) and I made it a bit too long for myself. All it does is save yarn. Thanks for the tutorial!

      What is the "regular" way to take it off the loom? And you said you didnt fold it, does that mean you didnt join the two ends together?

    • @zeke8997
      @zeke8997 10 років тому

      Amanda Klein The "regular" way to take it off of the loom is exactly how she did it, with the needle and putting it through each loop. I did join the two ends together at one "hole" of the hat (when it looks like a cylinder), but I did not make it longer and fold it over.

    • @amandaklein3393
      @amandaklein3393 10 років тому

      Ok thanks! I have another question. (Sorry im new to the loom knitting) does the peg on the side of your loom count as one? Mine is 40 pegs not including the side peg. Will my loom still work for this hat?

    • @zeke8997
      @zeke8997 10 років тому

      Amanda Klein (It's okay I am too XD) No, the peg om te side doesn't count. That's the anchor peg, it's there so you can start there on projects just to start somewhere, not peg number 1. If you follow this tutorial step by step and re-watch it a billion times, it's really easy. Some projects require it, some don't. My loom has that peg (as does Tuteate's) but do not use it if you don't need to. As a personal preference, I remember what peg # 1 is by always keeping it the peg that's directly to the left of the anchor peg. It makes it easier to keep track of where you started so you can end. Any loom would really work, but just make sure you have one that fits your head, or the person's head you're making it fr.

    Hi Amanda S. ! Here we used a yarn called Phildar Rapido, which is recommended for knitting needles of 6mm - 7mm. If yours is thicker, then you could just knit the half length (because you will see we fold it to be double thick), and skip to the end part of this tutorial.

    Love it! It really was super easy to do. I did do a little bit of a edit at the end by knitting the fabric together on the tips to make the ears stand out more. And I though I love it I'll have to try it again since the yarn I used was suggested with 5mm needles so it wasn't as tightly knit as yours.

    Hi Shawna Fay ! Yes, you better use a smaller loom for a child and also work it shorter. Here we knitted for 35 cm because we fold it and it turns out the half of that (17 cm). You maybe could work it for 30 cm (and the hat will be 15 cm in height)

      +Markie Mayhem Did you use the same method as the 41 peg ?

    • @MarkieMayhem
      @MarkieMayhem 9 років тому

      +Kimberly Gomez Yes, but since my yarn was thicker I didn't need make it long and fold over, and since my loom is 36 pegs I had to "force" the pattern every time I got back to my staring peg.

    • @kimberlygomez2740
      @kimberlygomez2740 9 років тому

      +Markie Mayhem Don't mean to bother you again but what do you mean by forcing it? Sorry I'm new to this .-. & thanks for the response (:

    • @MarkieMayhem
      @MarkieMayhem 9 років тому

      +Kimberly Gomez This pattern alternates knit over purl and purl over knit. On a 41 peg loom you can just keep going knit, purl, knit, purl, since it's an odd number, but on a 36 you need to "force" it because it's an even number of pegs.
      You would need to start each new round working the same stitch you worked on the last peg of the previous round. If your first round ends with purl you would need to make the same purl stitch on the first peg of the new round and keep alternating. Make sense? Sorry, I'm bad at explaining stuff... lol

    • @kimberlygomez2740
      @kimberlygomez2740 9 років тому

      Ohhhhh yes I understand, so can you force it for all projects that are usually for odd #'s of pegs?

  • @lsh6379
    @lsh6379 6 років тому

    If u want to create this as a beginner and a slow worker... IT TOOK ME A LOT OF TIME! I attempt to do this project twice. The first time I kept forgetting which stitch I was on, knit or pearl😅 i gave up on it. After 2 years I unraveled it and started again. I marked my loom with sharpie with dots one after the other. I made a list of the number of round I made and next to the number I put I started with pearl or I started with knit. So I can remember if I want to leave the project that I know where I left off. To reach 35 cm it took me about 74 wraps around the loom. BUT AT THE END IT WAS WORTH IT!!!😆😆😆 Its an easy process but takes some time lol!

The kitty hat that I made with a 41 peg loom and a thicker yarn-for needles 7-9 cm-turned out too big for my head and the ears are quite big (( I followed your advice and didn't fold the hat in two, only knitted abt 18-19 cm and then closed it. The hat now is 60 cm circumfence (round) and my head only 56!!! Think I will try another kitty ears hat with a thicker yarn now

    I do have a question about this project. I finally got around to making it myself. So cute!! What If I wanted to make it for a child? Would just using a smaller loom do the trick?

  • @LizVaughn
    @LizVaughn 10 років тому +2

    My loom only has 40 pegs and I read yours has 41. Will this mess have a different outcome on the knit/purl rotation? Thanks in advance for your help! This and 4 of your mug cozies/sweaters are last minute stocking stuffers. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

    • @Tuteate
      @Tuteate  10 років тому +4

      Liz Vaughn hi! :) You can use a 40 peg loom, but you will need to make a little change to get the same stitch, since the seed stitch alternates knit over purl and purl over knit. This means that on a 41 peg loom, we start the first round with a knit and the second round will start with a purl (because of the odd number of pegs). On a 40 peg loom you will need to "force" this change, and you will always need to start the next round with the opposite stitch. A tip to do that: You just need to start a new round working the same stitch you worked on the last peg of the previous round (for example, your first round will end with a purl, so you just need to make this same stitch on the first peg, after that, and then keep alternating... Then you will see that your second round ends with a knit, so just make another knit on the first peg and keep alternating...). :-) Hope this helps!

    Could you use thinner yarn or would that not work? Does it have to be bulky? This is an amazing tutorial and I love that I can actually go back in the video and find where I may have missed something! Thank u for using written words instead of verbal!!!!

    • @Tuteate
      @Tuteate  9 років тому

      erin may hi! If your yarn is too thin, it will leave a lot of space between pegs and your work will come out "holey". You could try using 2 or 3 strands of your yarn at the same time if you don't have bulky yarn...

    I just finished making this hat, the only thing I didn't do was fold over to make the hat thicker, and i didn't loom to the full 17cm i did a little less and the hat was way to big. Idk if i did something wrong or what. The bottom is really loose, is that because i didn't fold over? I use thick yarn that's fuzzy. I made hats on the same loom before and they fit :( i just don't know how to fix this hat, i really love it. Any advice? Thank you.

    • @Tuteate
      @Tuteate  10 років тому

      Tomariz hi! Hmmm maybe you could try weaving somehow the bottom of your hat, this should tight it up a bit...

    Very cute! Im def going to try this. Do you think that a 36 peg loom would work for an adult sized hat? Also, do you think putting a tack in the middle of each ear would give the ears an even more defined shape?

      +Amelia Sims hi! Yes, you can use a 36 peg loom to make this project. I just started on one of your videos and this is my first ever knitting anything. I'm really enjoying it, and can not wait to see the end result. I was wondering though was size yarn you are using as far as the thickness goes on this one? I may try it next and just want to be sure I get the right kind. The one I am making this time I believe I'm using a thinner yarn on.

    the easiest tutorial by far but what loom would I use for a baby ? and do I still knit to 35cm?

    • @Tuteate
      @Tuteate  10 років тому

      October Leigh hi! Thanks :) Maybe for a baby the best loom to use would be the 31 peg loom (we used it here, for a leg warmer: How to Loom Knit Leg Warmers (DIY Tutorial) ) and knit to 22cm (the resulting hat would be 11cm height ). Please let us know if you make it, ok? :)

    Hello, I really love this pattern. Just a quick question, about how many rows is 35cm in length?

    • @darthevil9999
      @darthevil9999 10 років тому +1

      Never mind, I figured it out. Thank you for this lovely pattern. I figured it to be about 56 rows as I looked up that 4 rows equals an inch. So 35 Cm equals 14inches. Awesome. :)

    • @Tuteate
      @Tuteate  10 років тому

      darthevil9999 perfect :) We usually don't specify the numbers of rows because sometimes people don't use the same yarn thickness of us, so maybe they need different number of rows to get the same length. Hope you get a nice hat! ^_^ We'd love to see it! If you want to, you can send us a picture of your result to info@tuteate.com :) We are updating our blog post with your results: www.tuteate.com/2014/09/17/teje-un-gorro-de-gatito-con-telar/

    Hello! I'm working on this project currently and I'm halfway to 35 cm, I'm just wondering if I should fold the hat as it shows on the video because the yarn I'm using is (as it says on the pack) size 6 super bulky and is 142g?

    • @Tuteate
      @Tuteate  9 років тому +1

      Mai Aimaia hi! If it is very bulky and you already have the half of the length (17cm or so) you can just skip to the end, where we bind off and close the hat (without folding the piece).
