I think the most important point is missing here. If you find your self in a situation where you have to defend yourself against a knife attack, you have to be aware of getting injured 100%. The only question is how bad the injuries are. So, don't believe you can escape unharmed.
After the fight is over. Please check your own body for any kind of wounds. Due to the adrenalin it might be possible that you will not feel every slash or stab.

You guys are totally right but this are good techniques that Jesse is showing. But the cutting part. You don’t tell the student that they can get cut when you train with swords either or a naginata or a spear. But as long as your dealing with a blade you can get cut and the longer your exposed to that situation it will eventually happen. And as always the best self defense is not to be in that situation from the beginning, but you don’t always have that choice.

For as impractical as TMA is in a knife situation, this is easily the most practical and 'real' tutorial utilizing such that I have seen. Major props for:
-advising to run away or comply, and only engage when you have no other choice.
    -groin strikes
-NOT WRESTLING BECAUSE YOU MAY GET STOMPED.
-the outer parry/head-slap combo, because i had never learned that, but I wish I had.

I had a knife pulled on me when I was 21 , riding at the back of a bus . Guy wanted my phone .
My Karate training came in but not how you’d expect. I shifted in my chair (almost like a super low kibadachi stance) so as to reveal the guy to the rest of the bus and he placed his knife hand down out of view and his other hand over the top . Literally at that second I bolted out of my chair and screamed blue murder - driver halted the bus and called the cops , but the assailant fled through the emergency window at the back of the bus and was never caught

When I was stationed in Europe. We learned knife defense from an old school Spetsnaz soldier. 1st priority is to neutralize the deadly force. Any movement that involves 2 hands against one is most effective. 2nd priority is taking him to the ground to eliminate his mobility. The most important principle instructors fail to mention. Is to accept that you will get cut. Accept it so you’re not hesitant to implement your technique. That will save you from being stabbed and cut in critical areas of your body.

First rule of defence against knife: try to run away. Well said Jesse.
Second rule: be aware that you will 100% get cut. So train your cold blood for the inevitable. There is no such a thing like a collaborative situation. The attacker will definitely cut you.
The only thing you can do is to damage control and try to survive.
If you can handle the first two rules, then you are good to go and try all the techniques suitable for these type of attacks.

Our instructor told us these defensive techniques
    1. If you can, run away, back off, keep your distance, the further away you are the least likely the blade will reach you.
    2. Use anything available for a weapon that will fend him off. A belt with a buckle is reliable
    3. If available go for higher ground, like a table or the stairs, then fend off with your legs. Again maintaining distance is key
    4. If you are somehow cornered, just give him what he is asking to end the confrontation, self-preservation should be first
    5. If you must fight, then expect you will get cut. Just try your best to minimize damage. Protect your face, and your torso where vital organs are. If you can deflect the cut somehow with your forearms, the better.

Easier said than done. But hey instead of panicking, we can do all these. I believe real martial arts will give us this presence of mind as we always deal with pressure during full contact kumite, osu!

To running away being the first tactic and that physical confrontation is the last resort. I just heard the beginning and that already got me. All people think that when u have karate and your a black belt for any belt u can defend a knife attack easily. Like u always say belts doesn't matter. U should always try talking ur why out of a fight or just run if u have a chance. My one friend also did karate and he was purple belt and he was in a fight there was like 2 or 3 people but he just punched the one guy done and ran. Easiest way to win a fight 😂🥋 thanks for making this videos.

If the knife is kept so static and the robber relies on the intimidating effect of his blade, defense is relatively easy. It becomes difficult when the attacker waves his knife, or as a madman stings. In the event of such an attack, only vigilance, nimbleness and unscrupulousness can help.

So I performed it on my back the way my sensei taught me 23 years ago when I asked him about grappling. Those are excellent techniques, Jesse, well demonstrated. This is why karate kata are so important. Many kata movements are close-in grappling techniques that you cannot use in sport karate. I would advise NOT to let someone get close enough to grab your collar as we see at the beginning of this video. Punch or kick them them BEFORE they get that close. I read a book by a retired senior police officer who said that the best technique against a knife is to THROW you wallet at them and then run away. You only fight if you are cornered and can't get away. But NEVER let them get close enough to grab or stab you. Hit them first. Yes, karate is only for defense but in some situations, the best defense is a good offense.

In Japanese jujitsu we learn techniques by themselves, then we learn how it might be applied in a real situation (Kata). Kata is just a suggested way of how you could if you choose to, apply the techniques you have been taught. You then practice free sparring ( also scenario training as realistic as you are prepared to train) to play with the techniques and Kata and see what works for you. Over time, as you change and develop you alter your system.
I trained Karate for 2 years as a child from about 9-11 years, then later Japanese Jujitsu from 13-33, UFC 1 started when I turned 20, Started training MMA 25-50. The Japanese style I trained in incorporated full contact kickboxing and Judo, so it was better than some of the other styles around. Chris Haseman was the most successful fighter in early Australian MMA and he was from a sister club.
I truly believe that modern MMA is close to what the original Japanese JuJitsu was meant to be, with the addition of focus on weapons.

I don't know, but I can't see myself doing this in a real life situation. I'll be panicking too much to remember anything, the attacker will be pumped to the rim with adrenaline and probably not so nice to let me push his knife away and throw him to the ground.
I'd hope to do it the easy way: If I get the chance that the losens his grip while I cooperate, I'd just punch a cheap shot against whatever is unprotected and run.

Firstly love how you said when attackers show you the knife its more to scare! and that commited attackers will conseal the knife so true have had experiences with both both were terrifying. Love how you find technique in Kata I remember being bullied in school and joining GKR Karate cause I got tired of being beat up all the time and as the more I learnt even from white belt made all the difference couple of techniques help keep them away and the beating weren't as bad remember beginner the point those real experiences is what made me thinking practical use take the head level block not very practical as a block unless sparing with fellow student then i began questioning why can't that block be a strike or a crossface I mean you hit someone in the face with the blade of your forearm as I call it it's gonna hurt so I built my self defence style of karate around that Soon I got good at awareness just being aware on my surroundings whats going on around me I was able to prevent attacks all together either by walking away verbal defusion so important if all else fails Pre Emptive strike at the first threatening gesture are they trying to touch me are angling off into a stance can i see their hands are their fist clenched. What are they saying!. May I share my knife defence story I remember 8 years ago I was coming home from work 2 hour commute in order to get to the train station you had to cut through the park. These two teenagers were waiting there attacked me or rather they were going to. I think they were doing drugs as i walked by or something they didn't want me seeing. They started moving at me saying ( Lets bash him) I'm already in a passive fighting stance ready to block or strike if necessary I was about to start verbal difusing when I heard ( I'm going to gut this fat pig) Red flag I moved in and struck imediately struck with the blade of my arm between the eyes my opposite struck low the force i used pushed him over and yes I picked up that technique with Kata. His friend was far enough away that I could get away without engaging I bolted for the station. So why did that work awareness on what was going on what they were saying. I know if anyone says I'm gonna gut him. or stab him they have a knife and if even they don't do not the chance they just threatened my life. So I did what I had to in order to get home safely.

I've always thought of finding the closest weapon. If he's close you could quickly grapple with him to get the knife away. If there's a broom or a broad object. You could use it as a weapon of defense against the attack. A staff or broom would cover a long length that the hands could not, or a broad object like a trash can lid would cover an area.
Speaking from someone who does sword art and karate, but always acknowledge the kubodo side as the karate weapons was use to defend okinawa when there were lack of weapons. A staff would be a polearm while a trashcan lid would be a shield.

That was one of your greatest videos Jesse, thank you for sharing. Of course there will be the choir of "experts" who will say this doesn't work in real life. But it makes perfect sense. In a knife attack you can expect to be cut or slashed, but that's better than being stabbed.

  • @mikehutchinson2191
    @mikehutchinson2191 Рік тому

one thing Ive heard from every knife fighting instructor is: "You're gonna get cut." I suppose in desperation, should things turn unavoidable, these techniques are about the best you can get.

I really liked the video, and the sense that Jesse is trying to explain here. Of course, if someone has to defend against a knife, they must be prepared to get cut. It is not realistic to think that it will come out completely without any scratch.

Control your emotions and try not to panic are your 1st defence because once fear and panic set in your thinking goes irratic and you will possibly run into even more danger during any attack, an example in 1998 I was once giving chase by 3 guys wielding weapons having kept my head I was thinking get to a safe place which in this case was the nearest post office shop once inside I explained what was going on and the shop owner phoned the police , imo run but if you have no choice but to engage use whatever you can to end it with minimal effect on you OSS... later that night I went to the dojo and our sensi was teaching defence from multiple people attack after hearing what happened to me but not once did he say run

If someone pulls out a knife be prepared to be injured, no one escapes from a knife fight without injuries, and always be calm, stay on the defensive and run around if you intend to fight, it's a battle of stamina, whoever runs out of stamina first has lost the battle, or wait for the perfect moment and counter attack, for example: if someone decides to go for a stab, during the moment that he pulls his stand back go either for a temple with a punch or elbow or grab his arm and try to twist, even if you fail to twist it will leave some good damage and the attacker might have to switch hands, though if you really twist you won, however keep in mind, all your energy will be used in this one single action, if you fail, well, it's game over, I shadowbox, against knife users and no matter how much my brain nerfs the user I can't find a quick way to get the dude, that's why you need to wait for the perfect moment, that's why I mostly dont continue my shadow boxing, cause my energy gets depleted in that imaginary fight against a knife user, in such fight always remain calm, dont let fear take over you

This is excellent against the average person who is untrained in the knife. No one trained would do these threats like you pointed out Sensei Jesse. My Sensei told me a story of two Karate Sensei who had a strong disagreement with each other. One day they met on a walk, they bowed and went and had some tea and then bowed and parted. That was the extent of their fight. I didn't get it - I thought to myself how was that a fight?
I was taught two point control and keeping their arm close to my body to prevent them getting it back... Still I find most techniques impractical.... Best defence is run!!!

This is something we all need to know about, if someone out if nowhere pulls a knife they want your money or a phone and if they counsel it always try to see both hands and run away to a safe area and call the police, or if you have a gun for self defense and your laws or iffy shoot them in the leg to show you didn't have any intent to kill and stay safe out there fellow karate nerds and stay mostly inside and try these moves aswell forgot to add that

Your first take down is a cat stance from pinan nidan where your oponnent is on the floor. From that location you can create an arm bar off the knee. Its more of an elbow break as your oponnent will be able to get up if you try it like an arm bar. Where if you pull the arm back aggressively and follow trough you will break the elbow with the knee.

Chinese materal arts got lost along the way. Espically northen style, like Taiji. Every movement is for a purpose. Link all the movements together is a long form. So in the past, people learn one movement at a time with applications or in order word how to use it. The teacher never taught long form simplly bevause there was no long form. They only taught diferent movements. Over years of practise with partners. You will be really good at combat. But to see what happen today. People only learn forms without realise what true meaning behind them. After 2 generations, even teachers dont know the applications. We have to look explaintions from other materal arts explenation of the application in order to understand ours. Thanks for explaining.
