- Tom Petty is one of the greatest musical artists of all time, but how is his legacy being treated by his estate? There have been many posthumous releases put out, and today we will examine them all and determine if they come from a place of genuine care, or if they just care about the money!
Note: In this video I did not cover the Documentaries put out after his death, and I also did not talk about Tom Petty Radio. I do not have SiriusXM, so I can't give my opinion on Tom Petty Radio, and analyzing the documentaries would be its own video.
Thank you for watching!

I have been a Tom Petty Super Fan since 1993. I was 12 years old and people thought I was strange as a 12 year old to have Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers be my favorite band. It has been that way ever since. I have bought everything I could since then that was associated with Tom Petty. I have seen him 12 times in concert and on my birthday in 2016, the TP fan club called me and gave me VIP tickets to see Mudcrutch Live at the 930 Club in DC. I was in the front of the stage and was one of the best experiences of my life.
I totally agree with almost everything you said. I think if Tom Petty was still alive a lot of this would not have come out. I pretty much bought all this stuff and on Vinyl and some both CD and Vinyl. I do think some of this stuff is a cash grab. I feel probably if Petty was still alive we would have got the WildFlowers boxset and Fillmore, with less weird versions and hoops to get some of the songs. I still like that we are getting stuff and I am a sucker and buy it except for the weird stuff on the website.
Petty fought to keep prices low for his fans, he was really not about Greatest Hits and comp albums, only if he was contracted through the record company...I think that is why we never got any Greatest Hits albums when he went to WB Records. He was just really worried about putting out new music.
In 2004, Petty worked on a Warners era hits album that never came out. It was going to be called “Greatest Hits Volume Two” or something generic like that and feature unique material. There were also work undertaken that same year on a two compact disc set featuring recordings exclusively from the 1997 Fillmore concerts, a project that was ultimately set aside in favor of a more expansive live collection which ultimately saw the light some years later as “The Live Anthology”.
Tom Petttys family and Mike Campbell painstakingly went through mountains of material that spanned his lifetime, while actively grieving Tom. They did this to honor him & persevere his legacy. They also released brand new ( vault songs) & others free for his fans on UA-cam. They have done an EXCEPTIONAL job perserving and honoring his legacy and I'm sure Tom is proud wonderful job they have done.
As an old school Tom Petty fan (not to mention The Heartbreakers) this is a really informative and useful video when trying to navigate the posthumous releases of such a legend, earned a sub from me, Cheers!
Thanks a lot! Most of my videos are about video games or movies, but I do have some more videos about Tom Petty planned
@@yoshipilot Nice, I am a avid cinephile and a bit of a gamer also so I am sure your vids will keep me interested...
I think that they should have named Wildflowers & All The Rest differently. I think that All The Rest CD includes only songs that Tom would have included in the double album in his original vision. If you leave out one "Climb that Hill" version then the album would have been 24 songs (12 songs per side = double album).
I think Girl on LSD, Driving Down to Georgia, You Saw me Coming etc. were not meant to be on the original vision of the album.
Lonesome Dave is a question mark. It was recorded during Wildflowers sessions and can be seen on the documentary where there is a list of songs. It was released on American Treasure.
They should have put these songs on Outtakes CD
Well we know that “Girl on LSD” was supposed to be on the original album. So at the very least that song should have been included. I feel the reason “All the rest” is so short is so that that disc could fit on 1 LP. And I feel that’s it’s kinda lame that the Vinyl release is holding back streaming and CD users.
Very good video. Yes it's all about money to them.
I love the picture on Tom Petty American Treasure & lit is perfectly named - He is an American TREASURE. You don't like being reminded that he died- who could forget for a second that he passed.
UPDATE: It has now been well over 90 days since "What's the Matter With Louise" was released, and it has not been taken down from amazon. I am not sure if they had a change of heart of if they never never actually intended to take it down despite what the Tweet at 21:00 says, but either way, if the song stays up, then I will rescind my criticism over making the song a limited time release. However, I still do think that platform specific releases are dumb, and I don't like the artwork they used that has an amazon logo on it.
TP was beyond simply famous and a celebrity; he was a musical icon and member of a very small club. That's why the conditions that surrounded his death should invite thought, about the people around him, and the nature of wealth and fame.
No question, his estate seems to being handled by careless and tasteless vultures. What has been released after his death in no way reflects who he was and what he was about.
You'd have thought that Mike Campbell would have some input in regard to the legacy of the heartbreakers?
Yeah, but to be fair he’s busy doing his own thing with The Dirty Knobs these days
He does. Both Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench are actively involved in the production of all Tom Petty/Heartbreakers archival releases.
god it is so nice to suddenly hear some (original) cave story ost, good shit
great video, very well made.
American Treasure. That's exactly what he was
