I looked for an answer online and found the frozen paper towel trick. While waiting for the towels to freeze, I figured I would check out other solutions. Saw Kelly Galloup. I know that name. He knows stuff. So I watched, taped my two stuck rods, and had them apart before my paper towels were even frozen. I could have dealt with the Reddington Path staying stuck, but my T and T Contact II was concerning, as I'm moving 1000 miles next Thursday. Kelly, you're the man. I owe you big. Thanks for your vids and all you give to fly fishing.
Sir, this was as useful of a video as I have ever watched on UA-cam. You have my appreciation. My old 60's Heddon 2-piece can now be properly stowed away again.
Thank you so much, after hurting my finger almost cutting them, trying to get a curtain rod open I finally opened it with what you did....thanks a million Kelly.
I am simply floored and loving this. I just met up with an old buddy for fishing who hadn’t been able to take a rod apart for literally years. I told him that you (Kelly) had a solution. So we watched your video at his cabin after fishing, tried this trick and it worked like a charm. Thank you so much!
I am so impressed - this simple trick is at the same time so advanced because it only takes seconds to solve the problem. I have spent hours on my fly rod, but luckily I found this video. Thanks
I paused the video and went out to the garage and tried this trick on my soft bait rod that would not come apart. Wow that was so easy thanks for that, worked a treat
Just rescued a costly salmon rod which had languished in the shed for 4 years having given up hope of ever separating the top two sections.....still needed some effort but sorted in 30 seconds. Brilliant!
Tonight, after 65 years of fly fishing, I learned the two most basic steps. How to put the rod together, and how to take it apart when stuck. Of course, I'm going to pretend I knew this all along. Even though i won't be giving you the credit in the future, for now, Thanks.
This dude is lowkey a 5 head genius. Tried ice, behind the knee, 2man pull and 1 man wiggle with no luck. 1 piece of tape around my hand and sorted. What a legend.
Crazy how incredibly effective this was. I had a rod that sat in the sun for multiple 85°+ days in the summer. I tried everything, and this was the only thing that worked. Absolutely incredible.
Omg. I tried the 'cooling down' method, the 'knees' method, the '2 person' method and the 'rubber gloves' method for 6 HOURS this afternoon. Tape trick? 20 seconds - done. Game changer indeed!
had an old Far & Fine that has been in my roof top rod carrier for about 2 years - maybe more. Stuck - HARD. Getting ready to head to a shop for help and turned to Kelly G. on the off chance there was a helpful video. BAM - rod unstuck though it was still a bit of a bitch getting it loose, wrapped with some painter's tape and BAM - Bob's your Uncle. Thanks Kelly -- will definitely stop in your shop next time up that way. Last time I was around there was a couple of decades ago - and I'm too old to wait that long. Thank You !
In boys scouts they taught us 2 things like 40 years ago...back when there were still metal ferrules being phased out...1) There is body oil (yuk?) on the sides of your nose...pre-lube the ferrule before install , lol. 2) IF stuck, put the rod (or "pole" if south of the mason dixon line) horizontally behind you knees. PLace your knees together . Grab the rod with your hands (also apply galloup double sticky tape ) press your hands apart using the power of your knees. If that doesn't work roll down the windows in your car, put one end of the rod in your car ......and go fishing with your new one piece rod! ;-)
Why is it the most brilliant ideas are always the most simplist? Tried this on a rod that's been stuck for months and it popped right out! Thanks for sharing!
Tried this tip this morning for a last-minute trip to the Adirondacks. I used painter’s masking tape (the blue stuff). Plenty of grip, took the rod apart in seconds (after trying all morning) and the masking tape just comes off the rod without leaving a hint of adhesive. Thanks for the great tip!
This is the only method that actually worked for us.The two person grab is a waste of time and so is the leg method. None of the other ones help fix the slippery grip you have on the rod. Kelly Gallup always knows what he is talking about!
OMG the top section of my fly rod has been stuck for days I have tried everything,, hot water,, cold water,, those gardening gloves with rubber dots on them, but then watched your video but like doubting Thomas I went to give it a try, using double sided carpet tape I applied it and without hardly any effort it came apart, I wish you could have seen the smile on my face…. Thanks 🙏
I have had a 7 piece travel rod that has been unusable for the past couple of years because I couldn't separate two sections for travel. I have tried everything and nothing worked until this. Great hack. thanks for sharing.
BRILLIANT TIP!! thought my week old scott radian was gonna be stuck forever, till i watched this! thank u so much for the advice….i’m forever in your debt sir!! 👌🏽
I carry the drawer liner material cut into hand-sized squares (also used to line tool drawers) in my waders bag for grip when needed. But should that ever fail, I'll use TAPE! For getting off the residue, my wife taught me that a little baby oil does the trick for most adhesives; done it for years and works like a charm. I imagine that would be super safe on the rod finishes too! As a somewhat "newer" fly fisherman, I'd rather learn from a seasoned pro like you than just anyone so I truly appreciate information like this Kelly - thanks so much!
"I carry the drawer liner material cut into hand-sized squares" Yes, I have some squares of that stuff that is a little thinner and was sold to give you a better grip on jar lids. I bought a sheet of the stuff you are talking about to use when I wear out the stuff I'm using now. I'll be putting a couple squares in my vest as well .... thanks for reminding me. Take care.
Thanks for this tip Kelly!! I have been flyfishing for close To 45 years and have NEVER got a Rod as stuck as I got my Redington CPX this weekend. Tried ice, heat, two person cross hand, and even the behind the knees, this finally did the trick, had to twist like a madman, but I got it, thanks a TON!!
Kelly, I recently had one of my fly rods stuck. I used the freeze method and it worked. I put ice into 2 plastic sandwich bags and placed the ferral section between the 2 ice bags. After about 45 minutes I was able to pull the sections apart.
I tried this and it worked so easily it was like someone had freed it before I tried. Took ages to get the duct tape off though, but thanks for a great tip.
Thanks so much for the tip...already had put my wet paper towel in the freezer from other how to’s on UA-cam. Using your method mine came apart with no effort.
Thanks Kelly, had a nice sage 4wt that was stuck for a couple years, used this method and it was still a bit of a struggle but it came a part and did not ruin my Sage. Nice tip.😊
Thanks for the knowledge I just got my 8wt apart for the first time in 5 years of inshore fishing. Worked exactly like in the video. Now back to my regularly scheduled beverage.
This is AWESOME! I have been trying that stupid ice gimmick and putting the rod behind your legs and every other so called method to get your rod apart. This brought a tear to my eye when the rod came apart so easily. I have broke 2 rods in the past trying to get them apart. I am so glad I found this. Thank you thank you thank you.
Thank you soooooo much💖💖💖 My favorite Okuma telescopic rod was stuck. Tried it all; warm, cold, rubber strap, oil.....etc. Finally got it open with your trick. Fantastic, I'm so happy now🥰🥰🥰😀😀😁😁
Holly stinking smokes Mr. Gallop, already looked up and appreciated you so much because of your awesome streamer tips I've learned from you and now this! I was so worried about putting my brand stinking new euro rod (thought stuck beyond belief) into my overly stuffed Subaru. Little duck tape and bam! I was pouring hot coffee on it, stuck it in the snow, surprised I didn't try pissin on it! Hahaha. Thank you so gosh dang much!!!
My advice is to use knee trick. -put the rod behind your back -grab your rod both sides of stuck sections -put left fist behind left knee and right one behind right knee -start to go down -your knees bend and put pressure to fists -your knees start to go out -your rods stuck sections will pop-out Works every single time
Brilliant. My precious split cane rod gets stuck at times and it's important not to twist a bamboo rod when taking apart. This method really works. I've often laughed at the "how to" videos which propose using ice packs. Right: I leave the river, get back to my car maximum luggage length about 7.5 feet - My rod's 8 feet , ferrule is stuck, have to get it apart before I can drive home. Luckily I have a freezer full of ice in the back so all's well! A small roll of duct tape in my fishing bag = peace of mind. Thanks.
I was in near panic mode when my classic sage 3-piece spey rod butt section was stuck, but I remembered seeing a video on your channel while watching your fly-tying tutorials. It took a bit of patience as it was really stuck, but it worked like a charm. Thanks man. and for all your hard work, thank you Kelly. I really enjoy your channel and have learned a lot of really good fly-tying techniques
I found an Orvis fly rod floating on a crab pot buoy while kayaking. Picked it up, but it stayed stuck for almost a year. Tried this trick with blue painters tape and instantly unstuck. It's a freaking miracle!
The most helpful video on UA-cam. Hardest part was cleaning the rod afterwards!!!
agreed….that sticky stuff is a bugger to get off!! 😩
50yrs of fly fishing and I still learn new stuff all the time. Thanks Kelly.
94 years for me, still learn a little each day.
Best simple thing I've ever learned on the internet. Amazing!! Popped apart like it wasn't even stuck.
Hey, this tip was awesome. I used that FROG tape that painters use. Does not leave a residue.
Same. I was so happy, as I've already wrecked the guides on rods in the past trying to get them undone
I looked for an answer online and found the frozen paper towel trick. While waiting for the towels to freeze, I figured I would check out other solutions. Saw Kelly Galloup. I know that name. I am so impressed - this simple trick is at the same time so advanced because it only takes seconds to solve the problem. I have spent hours on my fly rod, but luckily I found this video. Thanks
My hubby was giving our daughter a fly rod stuck together for 30 years...................this worked wonderful!!! Immediately...............great
This worked perfectly for me…not a fly rod but a four piece travel rod that was stuck. Not stuck any more! Thank you!
I paused the video and went out to the garage and tried this trick on my soft bait rod that would not come apart. Wow that was so easy thanks for that, worked a treat
That may be one of the coolest HOW-TO do things I've seen
I just tried it and it worked, :-) Relief!
Just rescued a costly salmon rod which had languished in the shed for 4 years having given up hope of ever separating the top two sections.....still needed some effort but sorted in 30 seconds. Brilliant!
It worked! My rod is unstuck. You are the man! Thank you!!!!!
Dude, HOW IS IT THAT EASY. Life saver
Tonight, after 65 years of fly fishing, I learned the two most basic steps. How to put the rod together, and how to take it apart when stuck. Of course, I'm going to pretend I knew this all along. Even though i won't be giving you the credit in the future, for now, Thanks.
You make everything so much easier! 😂 thank the lord for Kelly Galloups 😂
This dude is lowkey a 5 head genius. Tried ice, behind the knee, 2man pull and 1 man wiggle with no luck. 1 piece of tape around my hand and sorted. What a legend.
I actually wrecked the guides doing the knee method
Crazy how incredibly effective this was. I had a rod that sat in the sun for multiple 85°+ days in the summer. I tried everything, and this was the only thing that worked. Absolutely incredible.

Game changer indeed!
I remembered seeing this video some time ago. It happened to me today. Works as slick as you can imagine. Thanks Kelly!
Worked like a charm! Instantly came apart. I was on the verge of sacrificing my guide...thnx
It Worked INSTANTLY !!! And it was Stuck Bad.... Wow Thanks Kelly !!
I just tried it and it worked like a piece of cake
had an old Far & Fine that has been in my roof top rod carrier for about 2 years - maybe more. Stuck - HARD. The behind the knees method was ours back in the metal ferrule days, The sticky tape idea would have helped with that method as well.
We must be the same generation. Made me smile!
@@gregsage1605 . scouts was awesome!
Been there, done that :-)
It took 5 & 1/2 minutes to provide a 30 second answer! Thanks it did work.
Why is it the most brilliant ideas are always the most simplist? Tried this on a rod that's been stuck for months and it popped right out! Thanks for sharing!
Worked perfectly just as you said Kelly. Simple solution and now I can actually take my Shimano Backbone Travel'ing'!
Double sticky tape is an absolute stroke of genius!
Maestro. Awesomely simple physics👏

I’ve tried everything on my Jenkin’s Bamboo rod….it popped right apart with this trick. Awesome
BRILLIANT TIP!! thought my week old scott radian was gonna be stuck forever, till i watched this! thank u so much for the advice….i’m forever in your debt sir!! 👌🏽
It really worked. Thanks Kelly!! Was in your fly shop this summer. I missed you. You went to Bozeman.
Perfect ! I had a little sliding ring stuck on a fine tip. This method worked easy. Thank you !
Your next beer 🍺 on me pal! Saved my skin

Thanks for this tip KG!!! This is money, had a stuck 4 wt in the wilds of the UP and it’s back in action!
Everyone who is responding has needed this information at some point. Many thanks.
Kelly is the smartest guy in fly fishing. No joke.
Just tried what you suggested on a stuck part of a telescopic rod. Worked Great! Thanks for the tip
Really good trick to get the Rod parts unstuck, best i have ever tried.👍
This is incredible got my 50 year old Fenwick rod apart fast and no damage. Thank you for the lesson
Kelly, I recently had one of my fly rods stuck. I used the freeze method and it worked. I put ice into 2 plastic sandwich bags and placed the ferral section between the 2 ice bags. After about 45 minutes I was able to pull the sections apart.
THANK YOU now I feel like a genius.I just unstuck 5 sections. It is that easy
I tried this and it worked so easily it was like someone had freed it before I tried. Took ages to get the duct tape off though, but thanks for a great tip.
Worked like a charm!!!!! Unbelievable. Thanks!!!
Absolutely amazing, works in seconds
Fantastic. Just tried this on my beachcaster rod here in North Wales. WORKED FIRST TIME.. thanks for posting this
I love these rods for the price!! I will most likely be buying more of them! Great for catfishing and surf fishing!
Thanks so much for the tip...already had put my wet paper towel in the freezer from other how to’s on UA-cam. Using your method mine came apart with no effort.
Brilliant - worked so easily. I used Scotch rod tape - worked perfectly.
I have an old Martin fly rod that is stuck. A friend sent this link to me, and I am going to try it. Thanks for the video.
Many thanks. Rod came apart first time.
you just saved my ass with this, sent this to my buddies as well. Another awesome video
A true legend! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Kelly, had a nice sage 4wt that was stuck for a couple years, used this method and it was still a bit of a struggle but it came a part and did not ruin my Sage. Nice tip.😊
Thanks for the knowledge

Thank you soooooo much💖💖💖 My favorite Okuma telescopic rod was stuck. Tried it all; warm, cold, rubber strap, oil.....etc. Finally got it open with your trick. Fantastic, I'm so happy now🥰🥰🥰😀😀😁😁
Terrific!! This is one of the best instructional videos I have ever watched
Holly stinking smokes Mr. Gallop, already looked up and appreciated you so much because of your awesome streamer tips I've learned from you and now this! Worked like a charm. Thanks. Tight lines!!!
Darn I learn something every day thanks....Fish on
Thanks! you saved my day and my fly rod 🙏😁
My wife and I used this exact same technique after an extreme whoopi making session and were stuck...it really works!
Thank you so much, Kelly!
Great tip Kelly!! Thanks.
That was easy lol... tried the ice method before I found this video. Certainly wish I found this one first. Amazing tip!
My advice is to use knee trick.
-put the rod behind your back
-grab your rod both sides of stuck sections
-put left fist behind left knee and right one behind right knee
-start to go down
-your knees bend and put pressure to fists
-your knees start to go out
-your rods stuck sections will pop-out
Works every single time
That usually works for me, but I had to use this tape truck on one rod because my hand were slipping
Brilliant. My precious split cane rod gets stuck at times and it's important not to twist a bamboo rod when taking apart. This method really works. I've often laughed at the "how to" videos which propose using ice packs. Thanks Kelly. All done.
Thanks. I just used your method to pull apart a rod that has been stuck for 14 years.
Absolutely brilliant! THANK YOU!!!
Brilliant! Thanks Kelly 👍
Thanks Kelly!! I wish I would have seen this before
Worked flawlessly
Thank you so much for this incredible effective video, my rod came apart in a jeffy
How did you KNOW this happend to me a weeka ago??!! Literally. Been leaning against the grandfather clock!
Holy crap! Blue painters tape for the win! Thanks for the tip!!!
Great hack. Struggled with this for 60 yrs. Problem solved.
My travel rod was REALLY stuck. Had to combine the tape trick with the “behind the knee” trick but it worked like a charm.
Kelly, thanks- worked like a charm. We miss slide Inn, such a great place to fish and visit. John and Arlene Carpenter
Thanks so much. Worked just like you showed.
Thank you for the instruction on the separation of a stuck rod. I had a Loomis 7wt stuck for 3to4 years until I tried your method.
Worked first try, thank you so much!
Thank you. Worked like a charm!!
I was in near panic mode when my classic sage 3-piece spey rod butt section was stuck, but I remembered seeing a video on your channel while watching your fly-tying tutorials. I really enjoy your channel and have learned a lot of really good fly-tying techniques
Thanks Rusty, glad it helped. KG
I have a very large bench vice, use it for bending, with that and a 10 inch pipe wrench, always works.
Just worked perfectly…Thanks!
I found an Orvis fly rod floating on a crab pot buoy while kayaking. Picked it up, but it stayed stuck for almost a year. Tried this trick with blue painters tape and instantly unstuck. It's a freaking miracle!
Awesome!!! Thank you very much. After many attempts, many advisers`tips, your video solved my problem. Big hug from Spain
