Thanks for just saying black people. As a black person. People are too sensitive and the show is about science, not being pc.
+rainbowjellyphish Saying "black person" isn't not politically correct.
bul188 I just like ot better than saying african american.
+bul188 You do realize you used a double negative, which means you said it is politically correct.
+bul188 rainbowjellyphish is saying that because it should be normal (when not used with a negative connotation), but some people take it offensively (obviously some people that jellyphish has been around have).
+bul188 Shouldn't it be though?

Yup, my light-neon yellow toenails were an indication of stage 2 Ovarian Cancer (which no American doctor recognised; and I saw many)!
Its a very good reason not to wear nail polish, so you can monitor your nails for signs of potential health problems!

Now I don't know what to believe. Cristine says yellow nails are usually from nail polish then you're telling me I'm dying
You ain't dying you fine✌🏻️
If you paint your nails, the yellow color is probably from the polish. If not, you may want to see a doctor.
It can be just from nail polish. Or if you're a smoker, it can be from that, too. Try filing just a small patch of yellow on your nail and if it comes off and underneath it's white you're good and it's just nail polish stains. Don't file too much though, that can really damage your nails.
Amanda Lee Lol XD
If the base of your nails are yellow it might not be nail polish stains

I have yellow nails too. I broke them a month ago, didn't polish them for 2 weeks and the exact lenght of free edge is exact length of white nail I have. Just because... I didn't polish them 3-4 times a week. Yes! Yellow nails don't matter!
But what are those little white spots that you sometimes get on your nails???
+Liam Worsley That's what happens when you hit them or damage them somehow.
I always heard that they come due not enough Vitamin intake.
It's probably from a lack of calcium in your diet
+Liam Worsley it's actually damage done to them, whcih is why they eventually grow out
I was legitimately curious about this as well. Someone give a real answer because I'm already a hypochrondriac.
Thought this was a Buzzfeed video from looking at the title.
I always think these are Buzzfeed videos
+Dank Memes The difference was around 3:29
+-TriP- The name might be a bit clicky-baity, but its hardly inaccurate. Hank _did_ describe 5 types of nail deformity and what they may or may not mean, in the same balanced and careful way Scishow always does. I'll admit its hardly groundbreaking but its not exactly inane shit like Buzzfeed either.

Btw just so people know if you use dark pigmented nail polish and don't use a non-yellowing base coat you can see the tips of your nails change colors. As long as your cuticle growth (new nail growth) doesn't look yellow you should be fine, but start using a proper base coat to prevent yellowing.
I had pretty hardcore nail pitting but it was due to very low iron levels, not a skin disorder. I've been taking iron supplements for a few months and they are growing normal now!
I dropped a brick on my toe once and after I had a blue streak about 1cm thick grow through it
+Steven Wills I'm not a doctor, but it's probably because a fucking brick fell on it.
+Shercock Homoes not alone 😂😂😂😂
+Steven Wills i did that when i was 5 on my little toe, the toenail fell off :D
+LoadedTunafish I am DYING at this.
+Steven Wills I never dropped a brick on my toes but once when I came home I was in a bad mood and slammed the door shut behind me a little too fast so the tip of my index finger got squished. I didn't even feel anything for the first 5 minutes or so (as in, it felt like my finger ended just before the nail), after that it hurt like hell and the whole nail turned blue. On the positive side, I got to know how fast my nails grow since I could just follow the old dried blood as it moved along with the growing nail.
Adding in that yellow nails can be completely healthy, repeated wear of nail polish and especially darker colors stain the nail and that is not a problem at all. So if you wear nail polish a lot and your nails are yellow then you probably don't have to worry.
+Shelby Jones YAASSSSSSSSSSSS

Thank you so much. I was worried for a second there. My nails are yellow not my nail bed. So , all I have to do is apply a base before the actual nail polish?

This is so interesting! Everyone should watch this to possibly detect health issues early. Being able to able to spot issues like infection, lack of oxygen, skin disorders, diseases, and cancer just from certain characteristics of your nails is incredible and should be more of a common knowledge to people. Nails and their trends tend to be overlooked or flat out ignored. This video helps enlighten people that maybe they should be more observant of it. It's not like it would be difficult to actually glance at your nails ever so often and take in mind the changes in them. One never knows what small thing could benefit them in the future. This video proves that everything has a reason and in this case that reason isn't just for decoration.
Your content is simply amazing. I'm a medical student on my 5th year and your health videos are always a fantastic way to teach medical facts to other people.
And the way you drive attention to the fact you are not real doctors and that they should get medical advice is just the best way possible to share this important thing.
Thanks for existing! Hope you guys get more and more visits everyday. Top of the notch content.
Thanks for doing this video, Hank. I have been struggling with nail-biting for almost 25 years.
Same here. But I intentionally end it this year. I bought nail polish and paint them regularly. I now grow my nails. I told my friends about d progress and they are amazed
You can also get yellow nails from using too much nail polish
(SimplyNailogical)
You can also get yellow nails much more easily from using yellow nail polish.

I use a lot of nail polish and I get yellow nails when don't remove it for a long time so it could be
I got Beau's lines from my chemotherapy last year (unsurprisingly, since of course the chemo targets and kills fast-growing cells, and can't differentiate between fast-growing cells that are supposed to be that way and ones that aren't; it's why you lose your hair as well). Very evenly spaced (as were the treatments themselves), very regular, one for each course of treatment.
Eventually they grew out, of course, but it was neat to see. Happened on all of my nails. I was lucky, actually; most people lose at least a couple nails from chemo when the matrix and nail bed die, and I didn't lose any; just got the lines.
--Incidentally, we caught it in time, my treatment went well, and so far as we can tell I'm all good. :)
are you still alive

My toenails grow incorrectly, causing constant ingrown toenail on the big toes. After several fixes at the GP, I was sent to have my toes cut open, nail bed removed on one side, and treated with (iirc) Hydrochloric acid, now they grow normally. Just thought that might be interesting.
Thanks so much for this video! I've been very concerned about some rather bizarre symptoms that I've been having - but since inspecting my nails, which show none of the signs you've discussed, I have decided that I'm in perfect health so there is no need to see a doctor!
Sorry but there are many other signs of serious illness that appear in the nails, so please don't ignore them, see a doctor, please. Mine (light neon yellow toenails & blue cold nails on one foot) was stage 2 Ovarian Cancer!

I once had a set of bleachers drop on the nail of my big toe, turned kind of a purple/black for awhile, but then the old nail just came off entirely. The interesting part was the nail underneath that was about half the size of the original and looked exactly like mother of pearl.

I really love how you always make sure to tell people to see an actual doctor. It's sad that people do try to take medical advice from the internet. Great information, as always though! Thank you! Never knew how the nails got all those abnormalities. (I knew they did and why, just not how)
I feel the need to say that yellow nails can also be staining from nail polish -- and that's harmless.
I've got that raynaud's syndrome. Basically my extremities overreact to heat and cold. The constriction of the blood vessels causes numbness and can happen in temperatures as warm as 60 degrees Fahrenheit (at least for me).
please do one like this on hair! I am a hairdresser and it's appalling how little people know!
I'm planning to create a video all about hair health!! Our specialty is functional nutrition. I just posted one on nails. Subscribe and hit the bell if you're interested in what we release. It'll likely be in the next 1-2 months. I've been doing a comb of the research to make sure I don't miss anything!
Watching this video makes me very concerned with the health of my nails because I have the bad habit of biting my nails constantly. It was very fasinating to learn about how nails grow and all the medical issues such as Beau's nails, Pitted nails, Raynaud's disease, onychomycosis and subungual melanoma can be caused by the unhealthy care providing to ones nails. Not only will the bad conditions of nails, but these conditions can cause further medical issues such as asthma, eczema, emphysema and lymphatic system. This video was very educated and is wanting me to start making a change in the way I treat my nails by preventing myself from biting them as much as I do.

I have those too!
I have always been told that it's because you haven't had enough calcium
Generally, those are from hitting your nail hard against something, but they can also appear from the lack of calcium
Not sure, but I think that's when they get scratched or the underskin gets damaged
Raynaud's disease made it into a SciShow episode! Maybe more people will know what that is now! Now when I turn down winter sledding trips I won't have to explain myself! #raynaudslife

what if you have verticle ridges on your nails?
I have them too. My parents told me it's from lack of nutrients ._.
I came to the comments looking for an answer for the same exact thing, does anyone know what vertical ridges on your nails mean?
+Seymour Funk I think this because of not enough iodine in your diet. I assumed this would be covered in the video considering its way more common than these other problems.
They mean nothing. They are extremely common.
+garvythecapricorn
That something is extremely common doesn't mean shit
Blue/purple nails can also be caused by acricyonosis. The symptoms are similar to Reynoud's but it's a totally different disorder.
“Towards high priority activities like…NOT DYING.” - Hank Green, 2015
That's interesting. I have one toe nail that has some bumps and unevenness, so maybe I should ask about that. But I agree with the part about talking to a doctor, even multiple doctors. My doctor noticed I pick at my nails a lot and thought it was OCD, but in reality, it's more of a self stimulatory behavior and I'm trying to find alternatives that aren't as destructive.
I know this is a year later, but if you're still having that problem, I found that wearing jewelry helps. Now I play with my jewelry instead.
When I was younger, I thought that nails were bones that grew through your skin

What about those white spots that randomly appear on your nails
The most common cause for that is calcium deficiency.
I've found that only occurs when you've hit your nail on something, or got it squashed making it pull away from the nail bed it's not serious I get them all the time :)
+Jeriel Baker so drink more milk?🤔
Those little white spots are like bruises on your nail. Nothing to worry about :)

I started getting dark streaks some years ago, but this helped me feel a bit better about it since I'm a dark skinned black who just turned 22. ^^;;
I also have those horizontal bumps... They always really bothered me, but I guess I should just eat better. Most of my cosmetic issues seem to derive from this lacking diet...
I got black streaks 2, are you good
@@dericsmart2282 Oh wow this is trippy, I forgot all about this comment! I still got dark streaks on most of my nails, haha
I get eczema often and I do see those indentations occasionally.
I get eczema from soy! It is in even some supplements.
SciShow nailed this episode.
One time I had a dream where I had my right thumb nail ripped off during gym class because I fell and landed on my nail. It was very painful (or as painful as it can get for a dream) and the worst part was, the dream didn't end for a (simulated) minute or two.
This is one of the few non-recurring dreams I remember in great detail.
"Mom, my nail is green for some reason"
"HOLY SHIT, THERE'S A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX"
That’s the flower you break for a joint under your nail, idiot.
I've had a vertical streak in my big toe nail for as long as I can remember. I'm a 25 year old white male.
The lines you discussed first are really interesting. I kicked a door hard enough that my nail 'died' and turned an ugly purple color. It slowly loosened and fell off about a month later, revealing a smaller, bright red nail like a fresh layer of skin after you peel off a scab. About three weeks after that one of those lines appeared in that same nail. I've been panicking, but now I know it was just a result of the same injury. :)
Certain shoes can also affect your nails-like steel toes boots or ballet slippers. I still have a nail that just kinda builds up super thick ‘cause stuff dies under it from when I had to wear steel toed boots years ago (and occationally it all just peels away from what’s growing underneath. My brother still works a job that requires steel toed boots so all his nails are just like that.)
I also had my feet get waaayyy too cold with mild frostbite I think. Killed all my nails. Most have recovered, but it’s been a decade and I still have a nail with a permanent divot all the way from root to end with this kinda flaking area at the root where it just stops growing onto…despite the rest of the nail being a normal pink
(And my raynauds doesn’t really seem to affect my nail growth. My fingers and toes turn red to bluish then bright red and puffy or marbled, but my skin and nails are otherwise normal looking)
My nails grow really quick and can get long. My mother tells me my nails are nails that girls would want and I'm a guy XD
+R James James not if you finger them.
+R James James I have long nails and I'm a guy. They have many uses. I play guitar which makes fingerstyle MUCH easier. They're good for picking things. I can flick them off each other creating a snapping sound which I do when I'm bored. And I can claw and scratch people who annoy me :D
+StealthyTNT please cut your nails or I won't be able to sleep
+StealthyTNT Cut your nails, I think males who have long nails are disgusting. If you met someone new, they would see your nails and automatically assume that you're unhygienic and don't groom yourself
+StealthyTNT thats just my opinion, so do what ever makes you happy
My mom, uncle and I have Raynaud's disease. On cold days or if I don't wear socks all the time, I get patriotic nails (red blue or white).

Yellow nails can also be from nail polish, polish remover, and/or smoking! OR, any of what you mentioned, like fungal infection.
very funny!

Really in the mood the watch the matrix for some reason
I vote to name the lines or dots on your nails glitches, because it is a glitch in the matrix. I am serious about this, this needs to be spread. Everybody needs to know about this. Spread the word, my fellow internet friends!!
50% comments: nail polish makes nails yellow too
other 50%: glitch in the matrix jokes
So what about having opaque white spots on your nails? I used to have that as a child (I don't anymore), and I've never quite understood why that was...
+Robert Faber You get them from something hitting your nails. Its kinda like a nail bruise. If you get them frequently, you have a calcium deficiency.
It may have been the calcium deficiency then, because I had them quite evenly distributed on all my finger- and toenails.
I usually got them in periods where i drank a lot of milk, so i just asumed it was something with calsium.
+Robert Faber zinc deficiency
***** It's been too long to know for certain whether I used to bite my fingernails or not, but I don't believe I was ever flexible enough to bite my toenails...

+Drama_Llama_5000 There is a good remedy for this: use acetone or ethyl acetate on them.

I've had those horizontal wave things on my nails since about the time I got COVID in June of 2020. It's January 2022 now. I kept relapsing frequently for over a year and still sometimes do. So apparently long COVID can cause those, too.
On the pluss side, I'm no longer blue.
I clicked on a random video expecting no real answers but then I realized it was SciShow and I got excited I was going to get real answers to the random stuff I learn at night
well. they really nailed the vidio
Why does my nail polish cause a colour change on my nails?!? Please answer that, i want to know and theres no answer i can find on internet. Everyone who paints their nail will know this. Once u remove ur nail polish, the colour of ur nail looked yellower, sometimes paler. The darker the nail polish, the paler ur nail bed looked once ur removed the nail polish
+whyareyoulookingatme
It probably has someting to do with chemicals/minerals that make up the paint seeping down between the layers of nail plates, changing its color and/or refractive index. Maybe a thicker/harder transparent lacquer applied before the actual color is applied could help. It might seal the nail enough that the paint can't get between the plates.
+whyareyoulookingatme Your nails are getting stained. It is the same for ink or smoking. Paint, ink, smoking, and anything with strong pigment or a large concentration of small particles can soak into your skin as well as your nails, and the more of it that is allowed to soak in the darker the staining will appear to be as well as the longer it will take to fade away. If you are using a nail polish that tends to stain your nails try using a different brand, applying less, or applying less often. It is concentration and exposure time that affects this so trying different kinds of polish to find one that does not stain may mean that they kind you were using contains the right kind of concentration, or your nails may be more sensitive. As a guy, I have only worn nail polish about 3 times in my life, and the one time that I tried black polish, that did stain my nails. So I blame the polish first until you try some different kinds.
As far as lighter or paler I cant explain that based on the polish. The only thing I can help with there is the remover may be having that effect, and darker or thicker polish requires more remover. So that could be the reason for that.
Paint a coat of clear (or white) on first. The beds are looking lighter to you because the rest of it is stained and the bed is new nail.
Some people gave you really good explanations. Here's the simple version.
THE SHIT IN NAIL POLISH FUCKS WITH YO NAIL COLOR BECAUSE THE CHEMICALS IN THAT CRAP ARE FUCKING HARMFUL TO THE CELLS YO CUTICLES ARE TRYING TO PRODUCE.
I once played with my Epi-pen and the sharp needle went through my thumb. I ripped it out and felt nothing but it turned blue, so thanks for this episode.
I have had a red ring on all my nails for two year's now. My daughter died December 12th two years ago exactly. I found her. My mind snapped, for lack of a better word. I couldn't eat for the first year. I have custody of her daughter and need to be here to keep her safe. So I drank ensure, which is loaded with vitamins and I obviously lived, if you call that living. A friend said the first year is the easiest because you're in shock and denial. No truer words have ever been spoken. I was drifting away and finally agreed to try an anti-depressant. I've been on it for about six months now and I've started eating and being more active, but I still have the red rings and my hair is still falling out. I thought this would stop with eating healthy and taking my vitamins, plus being active, but there's no change. I've shown four different doctor's and non have done tests or have a clue what is happening. Please, if anyone has any idea what this could be, please say so. Her baby girl is five years old and when I say she needs me, she really does. It's literally a case of life or death if her father is allowed back in her life. Please. Thank you.
Found who? And good luck!
Why if you have small white streaks on the pink part of your nail? Sometimes I get those.
Don't quote me on this but I think those are like minor injuries whine the nail is growing or something like that
I heard they were calcium deposits
This means you need vitamin B. I used to have white spots, but after a few months of eating more vitamin B rich food and drinks I do not have white spots anymore.
No deficiency or so called Calcium deposits cause that thing. It can be due to some sort of repeated injury or nail biting.
+Aritra Chatterjee in school I stabbed my nail bed with a sharp knife
What about a lengthwise ridge on the nail?
They are basically the same thing as a wrinkle like what you get from aging. The matrix of the nail atrophies over time just like your skin and this causes the height of the segments of your nails to be variable.

WHAT ABOUT THAT WEIRD LITTLE WHITE SPOT THAT APPEARS ON YOUR NAIL
That's calcium build up. Don't not worry it's perfectly healthy. It list means you nail matrix was having a high calcium flow when those particular cells were being formed😃😃
when I was little (6 or 7) my older brother told me that the white spots on my nails were cyanide and I was paranoid about it until I was 10 and realized he was lying
i get it a lot don't worry it's not a big deal it usually happens when u damage ur nail, and not recently. it goes away quickly tho. u can look it up to get in more depth
It may mean there was minor trauma to that nail. I bang my fingernails against everything and it hurts like a motherfucker.
Ryan Ross Is bad I've had those spots since I was about 5 so I will stick to the calcium build up thing
