Alexander Rybak is every ESC-fans darling. 😂 He's still one of the most loved winners. ❤

not surprisingly. it is still one of the most contagiously energizing numbers with a very, very charsimatic performer (who isn't even sweating and can still sing straight at the end of all this).

Not only that really. His performance had many things going for him. A good mix of traditional music, hardanger fiddle, some eastern European to it. Cool dancers (dancing traditional Norwegian Laus dance from Hallingdal). It was also quite beneficial that he's of belarussian origin, so he got 12 points from countries like russia, belarus, Ukraine, Baltics as well as Nordic countries and some Western European countries. It's an achievement to win votes of both the west and east.
Btw. he was awful in his comeback years later. Boring song with no charm, and ironically it was called "That's how you write a song".

I have really fond memories of watching that edition of ESC and seeing Alexander winning, i was like 13 years old. After some years I rewatched the performance and I somehow could feel the nervousness of Alexander in his voice but I found it fitting with the song and the vibe it was going for. I loved your analysis Sam! Thanks for watching it!

    🇳🇴❤️
Just a quick note: he did not actually play the violin while singing as that is one of the rules of ESC. All instrumental tracks have to be pre-recorded.
An article interviewing Rybak said in 2022:
«At first, Rybak was worried when he learned that he would not be able to play his violin live at the Eurovision competitions, that the instrumental musical track would have to be pre-recorded. But in the end, it was the requirement to pre-record his violin performance that allowed the young energetic artist to defy gravity and bedazzle his audience, as he played his fiddle in positions otherwise unimaginable. The vocals were still live, infusing even more energy, and then there were special visual effects-pure magic.»

Who is Linsey Sterling? The violion sound is traditional norwegian, a Harding fele sound. Google it.. and I'll google Linsey Sterling.
And the dancers are not doing push ups, they are doing traditional norwegian folk dance, one for the men where they show off their physical prowess, if you pay attention there is a moment at the end where one kicks a hat off a pole. It is called Halling.
Also, Norwegians aren't that fussed about lefse. I haven't eaten one since I was 5.

Great info, spot on.. It's so strange listening to this reactor because he so out of context. That is Rybak and his fiddle, ESC the dancers, the culture, etc.. When knowing this one see that he reacts to and comment the wrong things. However, he's positive and entertaining, so I had a good time listening to him 😊

  • @VampyrMygg
    @VampyrMygg Рік тому +35

Lindsey Stirling? this was in 2009, I think that was before her popularity :P
And while I don't know that much about the instrument, I think the sound of Norwegian traditional fiddle playing is due to a slightly different style of fiddle, I can't remember what they're called.
And if we are drawing comparisons to someone doing remixes while playing a violin, the OG is Vanessa Mae, she was doing it in the 90s :P
Also, Lefser are delicious, and so typical of Norwegian grandmothers to make, you might wonder if it's a law demanding all grandmothers make them, maybe a old weird law like the one that says all farmers need to make beer and have it available for guests, which was an actual law Norway had in the past.

The vovel issue is a language barrier. Our vovels sounds completly different, our "i" is prononced like the english "e" and "W" is prononced as "VV" not a "double U" and we have "Æ Ø Å", but thats actually helpfull cause english "ae" and "a" in words like "Bad" "Dad" and "married" its "Bæd" "Dæd" and "mærrid" as how to pronounce the "Æ" the same with "Murder" "Run" "and "hurry" is "Mørder" "Røn" and "hørri" and "Cought" "morning" "jawn" is "Cåght" "Mårning" and "jåvn" Todays Norwegian Lession 😅

It's always great to hear you analyze performers. Now that you've reached the tip of the iceberg you should try to do more ESC performances! My suggestion would be going either with the very good ones, like the winners (I would love to see you analyze Loreen's Tattoo, this year's winner) or the performances that could have gone better (I'm thinking maybe Do It For Your Lover, which was the 2017 Spanish entry). The former is just a must, but I think the latter would help us understand where sometimes performers go wrong and how to avoid that.

It was fun, seeing you react to Alexander. One of the most memorable performances in my childhood(from Eurovision), though our country's 'Ott Lepland's, Kuula' must be my favourite, if I were a patriot :)
I would like to see you react to a crossover group, Forestella. The 1st choice for most would be their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, I do agree that it's an amazing performance and their international fame pretty much has come from this, but I would like to suggest a few I like more :D 'Utopia, Champions, Je Suis Malade, Time in a bottle, Despasito', of course they have a lot more, but I always liked your reactions, so I hope you make them justice and make me happy by considering reacting to them.
This is not something you would expect from K-pop, but from around 2014-2015 South Korea started with a show called Phantom singer, and this group was formed in the second season, as the final winners, 1 bass, 2 tenors and 1 contratenor/rock singer. The latter had almost no training in music before the show and he is my fav in this group.
    Waiting for your reaction sincerely!

I think maybe part of why he’s struggling a bit with his vowels may come from his accent. Wondering whether or not he might be intentionally keeping it there so as to sound as Norwegian as possible. Especially seeing as this whole song is kind of an “ode to ye olde days” of Norway when we would play fele all day in our bunad while eating grøt for breakfast lunch and dinner (I’m exaggerating a bit, ofc).
While I’ve never been that big a fan of svele myself, I can’t recommend vaffel med syltetøy og brunost enough! My grandma has this recipe that’s without eggs (because my baby brother’s allergic) and it beats the store bought batter by far, but I’m sure just about any recipe would tbf 😆
Greetings from your ancestral home country :)

We usually lie low most decades, but once every second decade we hit with a winner. BobbySocks in 1985, Secret Garden in 1995 and Rybak last. Rolv Løvland made both La det svinge in 1985 and Nocturne in 1995.

The arrangement of the song has been slightly changed here. There is a show on Russian TV “One to One”, where singers are copied. This show does EVERYTHING just like the original! Right down to the behavior on stage! Even the appearance is made the same as the original! This is at Eurovision: ua-cam.com/video/qGQqj6WY4IE/v-deo.htmlsi=aXNnQxcWbMTY7s1Z And this is the show “One to One” (Alexander Rybak is their guest looking at his double): ua-cam.com/video/pqSWFlUlHyY/v-deo.htmlsi=m5xCfd-bKrvqwySO
